Xbox 360, PS3 will ultimately win, Wii to fade into obscurity

Nintendo certainly has a winner on its hands for the time being. The Wii is still very hard to find unless you are willing to pay exorbitant prices for it on eBay. However, Nintendo is currently running a great game of great marketing patly due to the unique Wiimote motion controller. Analysts say these novelties cannot last forever and the Wii may well end up being tossed aside after a couple more years, or sooner.

The company was all but betting on the motion controllers and games like WiiSports to sell the units and it has but some have doubts that Nintendo can turn this into an on-going success. One of the things mentioned in the original article and elsewhere are the Wii's antiquated graphics, I still say they are little better than the original Xbox.

We probably won't even make it to 2009. Because the Department of Homeland security and Bush have implemmented the RFID chip (Radio Frequency Identification Device) A lot of you guys will be lost because you will be driven too much into the games to even know what's going on. All U.S. citizens will be chipped by May 2008 says the Homeland security. RFID is supposed to protect us from ''terrorists'' but its a lie because its already been proven failure. RFID will supposedly replace driver's licenses, State IDs,Medicare,etc. It will store all of your information on 1 chip. That chip has to be planted in your skin. Now think about it, if anything has to do the radio frequency (RF) that means you will be tracked by sattelite. Thats right, our privacy will be invaded. Our current standard IDs and driver's licenses will not be accepted soon. Taking the RFID is voluntary (for now), it will be manditory later on. So is video games worth your freedom? Not for me! I know that a lot of you will probably attack me or whatever. But you should all be thankful that I told you this information! America has to wake up! Soon RFID will also be adapted by all other countries. Watch out for the new season of Pimp My Ride, they will be using this new technology to open doors etc. They won't need any keys. Sure it may sound cool, but they probably don't know all the info of what ts capable of.

I just don't get it. My prediction is the 360 will win this year and still be in the lead right up to Christmas 2008. Yes after that time I can see the PS3 starting to catch up once the price of the machine is right down. The thing is Microsoft isn't going anywhere.

The PS2 has sold just as many as 360 since it launch, and that with the 360 so called great games. Sony is still selling consoles whether it's the PSP, PS2 or PS3. PS3 has sold 5.5 million units since launch and that's with the high price and one can assume with the price droping on a yearly basis it will continue to sell more and more, especailly with the AAA games and with people wanting to make the HD jump. Out side from this year, and with blu ray taking off the 360 sells will continue to decline rapidly. Let's be honest for a minute, with the PS3 offering better features and free online at the same price as a 360 with a $50 subscription yearly how can M$ expect people to buy the 360....Remember I said this, By the 2008 holiday PS3 will have double 360 total sales and surpass the wii...I'm selling my 360 now while it holds some value, I recommend you do the same

I find your reasoning extremely flawed. Let me help you out here. The PS3 is unlikely two win for a number of reasons. The first reason is price. Due to its much higher price point and the fact that with ever price drop of the PS3 the 360 can follow suite is a major blow. As such it will probably be several years before they become cost competitive with each other. Additionally, because the 360 is most likely to reach the sweet spot, $200 to $250, long before the PS3 this presents another challenge for the PS3.

I believe it is incorrect to view Blue Ray as a major asset. The increased cost of the PS3 due to the BR drive easily offsets the value of its inclusion in the console. As time goes on and BR players become less expensive more people will be using dedicated players. It is a known fact that few people use their console movie players as their main method for watching movies. So the cheaper the stand alones become the less reasons there are for the PS3 and movies. Don't give me any crap about BR being needed for games. Even if that were true the average person, the ones who dominate industry sales, don't give a crap about 1 or 2 disc games. That fact that the Wii is selling so well is proof of that the average consumer is clueless.

Your argument that Live costs money while Sony's poor equivalent is free is again flawed. First of all PSN has to first match Live in quality before it becomes a real threat. Second of all, lets assume that PSN actually reaches Live, unlikely as it might be, all that MS has to do to combat PSN's price advantage is make live free. End of story.

The only reason the PS3 might actually win will be because of brand loyalty. Both consoles either have great games(360,) or will have great games (PS3). They are similar in capabilities. They each have their strengths and weaknesses but none so dominating as to for a major win over the other. I think that the biggest advantage is price and the 360 has that one in the bag. So unless brand loyalty will eventually rule the day I just don't see how the PS3 will be triumphant.

I advise all of you to see early analyst predictions of the previous generation. They are not very accurate.

Analysts also said DS was a fad and that`s proven wrong, they just can`t stand the fact that Wii is here to stay.

I have them all 3, and my favorite has been 360 this far, though I do expect that to change mid-late 2008 when PS3 releases it`s larger titles. The Wii is perfect for the RAD retro gamer.

The average consumer is incompitent. They have no idea what composite, component, or HDMI is.

The Ds vs psp war is showing us that. the ds is killing the psp in sales, despite the psp being superior in tech specs. it real simple nintendo uses their price and gameplay innovations to beat out the comp

But where does this leave us in terms of games? I can't speak for anyone else but I can't say that I've played anything revolutionary on Wii that would change the way we think about videogames forever. Many media outlets were pinning that type of change on the Wii and I've yet to discover it.

As of now, third party efforts on Wii have been fairly lame with the exception of a couple of titles. After Seeing What the PS3 and 360 hardware can push I'd be more inclined to keep purchasing games for those two consoles. We might not be seeing some of the most original concepts but I'm sure as hell willing to put down the cash for their 2007/08 lineup over what Nintendo has to offer.

Is a good machine, I barely touch it though. My neices and nephews always have a blast though so that's what it's for, they could care less about HD output or running games at max resolution. In this respect, nintendo made a good decision. All kids know is, Yellow plug goes into the round yellow port on side of the tv, do the same for the red and white and select input on tv to video1 and you're ready to hop around till you fall down. Seriously, the Wii is a kids console and that was the reason for me having one. 360 and PS3 are not for kids, they are for people like you and me.

But right now thats all the Wii is. It will capture 1 segment of the market. With HD output it could of dominated this generation. But as it stands its appeal is pretty much limited to nongamers. Even casual gamers know not to buy the Wii version of any multiplat game. For example Madden on the Ps3 has completely outsold the Wii version on Amazon (PS3 hit as low as 4th and the Wii version never even cracked the top 10 landing at 14 at its high point). Despite the fact the Wii has more then double the installed base in the US then the Ps3 has(4 mill compared to 2 mill).

I recall seeing specs on the Nintendo Revolution stating that it could end up with a 3.2Ghz single-core CPU, or possibly a dual-core 2.0Ghz CPU.

That, combined with an HD-Capable video chipset and at least 128MB of RAM (Vs. the measly 88MB they put in the final product) would have made for a MUCH better system than they ended up with.

Honestly, SOME games actually look decent on an HDTV. Zelda looks pretty decent... But other games like Resident Evil 4 look like CRAP on an HDTV, but looked pretty good on my buddy's old 25" SDTV.

I'm glad for Nintendo that they have run into a hit like this, and are back in the game financially. But at the same time I'm pretty disappointed that they just tacked a new controller on old tech and called it "revolutionary". For their sake, I hope that 3'rd party developers are actually able to deliver something compelling for the Wii... 1'st party support alone will not keep the momentum going...

The PS3 is a remarkable design and it offers a great value. But as a gaming console it is a poor design. It is difficult to utilize the power and the memory limitations hurt its graphical abilities. Plus it is expensive.

I think the PS3 will ultimately make Blu-ray win so Sony can enjoy that - but I fear that downloading content is going to kill the optical market. I have not purchased or rented a movie for myself since I was able to get on-demand content. The amount of HD content is still limited (and my download speed makes movies through XBOX Live tough) but I am patiently waiting and I have a lot of on-demand movies if I go non-HD. So the Blu-ray thing may be an empty victory for Sony.

$350 for a XBOX 360 is a very nice deal - when it hits $300 how will Sony match it with the PS3? And it is not like the games for the PS3 are going to exceed what is available for MS - both have a great 2008 line-up. I suspect in 2008 games will be allowed to require the HD (the number of cores sold is small - they will just have to buy a cheap HDD) and the advantage of the Blu-ray will be nonexistent. I think MS is going to win this round - the Wii is aiming at a different market so we will see how Nintendo does in the end.

It is an interesting concept, however, it gets old fast. I played it at my friends place. Wii sports and Mario Party. The games were okay, but using the wiimote got old very quickly and turned me away from the Wii for good. Not the games, but the boring Wiimote. So, 360 FTW! I think 2010-2011 is when the next round of consoles are unleashed. One thing I am wondering is whether the next round will use raytracing. Anyone that has studied this can tell you there are more computationally efficient ways to do graphics. But the beauty of ray-tracing is that it would make it very simple to do graphics. Just create the models and you are done. No need to have tons of graphic designers spending hours trying to make things look right - things would look right naturally. Shadows, water effects, ect. - would look natural. Physics could be made much more realistic - if something breaks it will look great in real time. So the question in my mind is whether the next round will allow either MS or Sony to do this. It they can it seems like the give the developers a very cheap way to make great looking games - the cost is in the hardware.

I remember being at an EB games a couple of months after the Wii came out and the store had just got a shipment of wii's and ppl were lining up for it. Ppl think Sony in general is an evil corp, this is why many ppl hate them, but what if you look at the bigger picture you can see that sony supports their product, this is what made their gaming division succesful.

Nintendo is succesful because they make affordable products.

Like it or not but MS just seems like they are trying to lure pc gamers who can't afford expensive hardware but are scrambling to gather market share from console type games. The strategy of MS is enter the market with brute force.

Microsoft's was the original xbox and now they are extremely successful with 360. The gamecube was a pause for nintendo and wii is their most successful thing. I don't own a Wii. I own a 360, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, PS1, Saturn, N64. Even I can tell the Wii is unstoppable.

Like the iPod is to mp3 players, the DS is to handhelds, the Wii is to game consoles. Only even more so, because the interface IS that unique.

Not because I dont like the wii or 360 they are great. Just looking at the market as it stands though... Last Gen ps2 had 2/3 rds of the console market last gen. So ps3s slow start matters little its just how it goes. Ps2 started slow too.

Wii seems to be gathering new gamers who hadnt gamed b4 and wii isnt really poster boy for hard core gamers. (hard core gamers buy most product)You may disagree but look at the actual prices its like 1 ps3 = 2x wii $$$ wise.

360 Has its following from Halo and gaining new killer i.p's in 07/08 i.e mass effect and gears. Which will satiate its install base.Its 08-09 line up as it stands is dry compared to ps3's. Also the failure rate is nasty.

Ps3's in 3rd in sales at this point due to price point alone. In 08 super saucy titles will be slapping shelves left and right and expect price drops as well. Homes coming , and Blu ray is going to be more and more attractive to devs as time goes on.

So cost is high but companys always invest in the future not the past. 3rd party EA games arent system sellers either.

Thats why I said as time goes on blu ray becomes more attractive because development costs will go down as time goes on. Devs will be able to streamline ps3 game development as time goes on and it will be less expensive. Also expect a larger install base as time goes on.

It takes time for the masses to adopt ps3 but they will eventually.

IMO the Wii is suffering only one thing, lack of games from 3rd parties. The multi formats usually miss out the Wii and unless the tide turns it will be the N64 all over again. It would also be intresting to see how many Wii owners own or plan to own a 2nd console.

IMO the 360 has done well, better than the original XBox with a good line up of games this year and well into next. The only problem I see for Microsoft is if companies start to take advantage of Blu-Ray with extra content.

IMO the PS3 is doing better than they are being given credit for and certainly have some top titles on the way that are different from the other consoles. The only problem I can see is if companies do not opt to do anything with the extra storage space. Then the extra money paid for the console is a big waste.

As to who will win, IMO no-one will win. All 3 companies are working on a different time scale. If Nintendo and Microsoft are working on new consoles for 2 years time, then according to Sony there is around 6-7 more years left in the PS3. Likewise you have to wonder weither or not Nintendo and Microsoft will halt all developement of games for the old consoles (like they did for the GC and XBox). The PS3 will likely be the cheap option by then, with the other 2 consoles weighing in at alot more heavier price.

Microsoft will probably go with a 2009 release of their next console. The 360 already appears to be a sinking ship, so best to cut their losses and move on, and maybe get it right this time. It will also give them a chance to get into motion controls, and, again, be the first in the market.

I don't think Nintendo will be breaking their 5 year cycles. 2011 is just about the perfect time to give people HD, anyway, since the HD changover will be in full effect about that time.

PS3 will probably go for a long time, and its price will go down, but I doubt that when Nintendo releases their next console, PS3 will be cheaper.

Nintendo isn't the kind of company that will release a $350 console, well out of the reach of the masses of people who might want it, and its doubtful PS3 will reach that mark, considering Sony is dumping the expensive parts already (emotion chip) and still manages to lose money on every PS3 sold. PS3 will probably have a hard time reaching the price of a Nintendo product before they're ready to dump the rest of their PS3s.

Different times mean nothing though. If in 10 years, the PS3 sales reach 125% that of the Wii, but the Wii and the next Nintendo console sell the same amount, the PS3 beat the Wii, but Sony did not beat Nintendo. We could say the same about the 360.

It's still early to say what will happen, but we know one thing, only the tip of the iceburg has been seen to this point. We still have upwards of 100 million consoles to sell this generation.

I was 3, I believe, when I first beat Mario. I've been playing games since before I could walk, I'm told, though not well (sometimes I still don't play all that well). I remember, when I was 6, I got an SNES for my birthday, and I was so happy.

I've been gaming my whole life, and the Wii sold to me.

I think you have it a little mixed up. The PS3 and 360 are the ones selling to people who think graphics mean so much, who have been playing 10 years or less. Assuming Sony/MS eventually copy the controller then the Wii wont be around next round because it would have lost its unique gameplay advantage.

meah, i have my wii running at 480p hooked up to my 52" HDTV and it looks great- hell, a vast improvement from without those cables. Although I cant wait to hook up a PS3 & a 360 to it as well.

Your right, but you have to remember that Nintendo has a strong user-base backing them in the handheld department.If Nintendo ever stopped making consoles they could still dominate in the handheld market. Also, the DS is original. It has it's own unique style of gameplay. The PSP,IMO,is basically a mini version of the PS2. Mostly,only hardcore Sony fans bought a PSP. When we talk about consoles though, that's a whole 'nother thing. I'm sorry, but most of the people who purchased a Wii are not really 'gamers' but rather oppurtunist that want a new console for the cheapest price. The PS3 will win for several reasons and it's been proven.
1. Blu-ray is outselling the HD DVD 2:1
2. Backwards compatible w/ the ability to upscale PS1, PS2, and PSP games along w/ standard DVDs.
3. Only system to play in 1080p.
4. Has a really big line up of games which will beat anything that's coming out for a long time.(ex. Killzone 2, MGS4, Ratchet & Clank, etc.)
5. Internet and online gaming is free.
6. The release of Home will eat up Xbox Live due to better graphics, 3D imaging, and connections to build a virtual apartment and link to multiplayer games and watch movies.
7. Sony owns most of the movie industry so they can get all of the really good movies on Blu-ray sooner. (ex. 300, Spiderman 3, etc.)
8. More and more people are being converted to Blu-ray.
(ex. Disney, Universal, Fox, TNT, etc.)
The list just continues to go on I don't mean to offend anyone but it's the truth.

2. Without the Emotion chip, its not backward compatible with every past game, and the Wii has games from farther back, while the 360 can play most Xbox games. Not a good reason here, either.

3. Your average consumer...heck, many of your more informed consumers, won't know what that is. HD needs to take hold before most people even care, and it hasn't yet.

4. As much as it pains me to say it, Halo 3 will beat all of those (oh, and how I hate Halo...) Nintendo also has quite a lineup of games comming soon. The PS3 has good games comming, but so do the Wii and 360.

5. Technicly, so is the 360. You get the free silver Xbox Live membership for getting it so they can boost their numbers, though you can't go and play Halo online with it. The Wii has free online as well, and from how it has been going, it will have quite a few online games. So the PS3 doesn't donimate here, either.

6. This is true. From what we've seen, Home will blow away pretty much any other online experiance to date. I don't think its anymore likely to crush Xbox Live than WoW, but it should be quite an experiance so long as people keep going on it. If people get tired of it, it will die, though.

7. Ok, I'll take note of that and get a Bluray player when they get down to about $100. Until then, my DVD player will let me watch any movie. People will buy stand alone Bluray players for this, not a PS3.

8. See #7.
