Improving Xbox LIVE: David Keating Investigates!

Xbox Live has come a long way since its debut in November of 2002. Having matured from a basic online gaming service to a streamlined, feature-rich social network, Xbox LIVE has become a major selling-point for Microsoft's Xbox 360. Although LIVE has already improved a great deal over the years, there are still numerous features that the community has been clamoring for. While it is still generally considered by many to be the best overall package for gamers connected to the web, there are a number of ways in which LIVE could be enhanced for the its 6 million users. Myarcadeplanet.com explores some of the most commonly requested improvements for the popular service.

#3 Party Chat

I can't count the number I times I've wished for this to be implemented by now. Everytime I go to chat with friends, I wish we could start up a party chat since we tend to be playing different games. I know it can be done and I maintain hope that it might make it into the Fall update.

1. Absolutely, if i could only add one thing it would be Party Chat. The channels are already there M$ !!!
2. Next would be to expand the friends list.
3. Expand VGA resolutions & a color editor. Some of this has already been done, but a color & gamma editor would be nice. VGA is a killer video connection to your Tv or monitor, if you have a VGA port. Best picture I can out of my Elite vs. HDMI & component for my 1080p Samsung Lcd.
4. Free Marketplace - a section of Marketplace that only displays the FREE items.
5. Gamer Pics - Display ALL gamer pics in the window before consumer purchases. Some gamerpics have no visable window, so if you buy them, it's a crapshoot as to what you get.
6. Achievement manipulation - some of my friends on XBL came up with this - they wish they could manipulate *EARNED* Achievements to show their particular personal favorites first, per respective game.
7. Theme editor - You can already add your favorite wallpaper to your dashboard, but it is the same on every blade. How 'bout some shareware for 360 owners to allow them to construct their own themes. It would be a cheap & very simple to make.
8. Improved Matchmaking & show connection speeds in the lobby. Can't stand ppl who host games with a 1.5 meg connection = Turbo Lag.
9. More dedicated servers ( Thx Meus Interpretation )

is that party chat can ruin games for example Gears of War. When you die, you cant talk to your teammates. If party chat were possible, people would cheat that way. Maybe if they made it like the old Xbox dashboard way.

I'm hoping sony step ups it own online programs to the point that MS rethinks some of Lives flaws.

Party Chat and a bigger Friends List.

cain1413537d ago

Problem with a giving a bigger friends list is that people will keep asking for that to be expanded.

candystop3537d ago

That's true but 100 people per friends list is just not enough! I've been saying the same thing for years and it's gets annoying having to delete friends! Many of my friends have been on since the beginning also and I hate having to delete someone or not be able to add someone new that just joined!

cain1413536d ago

My point is say they make it 200, in about sixmonths you will want it at around 300...

Give a mouse a cookie and he wants a glass of milk...

Bnet3433536d ago

cain141, bubble for the analogy

Captain Tuttle3536d ago

So what? People are complaining now with 100. Give everyone 200 and they'll still complain. The only thing that'll change is the bigger list. What's wrong with that?

cain1413536d ago

When it comes down to it, nothing will change. People will still be wanting more and not content with what they have. It will be the same situation you are in now. If your the type of person who uses their full list, like me (98 at time of typing), you will still be feeling the crunch you do now with only 100.

Silver3603536d ago

They charge 400 points for a bigger list(100 people) that way only the people that really want will get it. That way if you wanted a 1000 people you can just buy it in 100 people units.

Captain Tuttle3536d ago

Now THAT'S a fantastic idea! Bubble for you man.

cain1413536d ago

I actually agree with that...

But the limit now is a bit small. A little bigger would not hurt. Also, Im thinking that in-game advertising has been doing well according to initial reports. I agree with the suggestion of Microsoft placing non-obtrusive ads for a cheaper or free service. If the ads are huge and bothersome, ill be a little bit ticked off.

nirwanda3537d ago

to bring the price down with ads 400points without 800 or with classics free with ads 400 without.

Captain Tuttle3536d ago

Great idea...give folks the OPTION of having ads for a cheaper price.

ZombiesNJ3537d ago

I think they should decrease the price to about $25. $50 is quite a bit and by November people (who bought it at launch) would already be paying $100. If people keep their Xbox360 for 4 years (from launch) it will equel the price of the PS3.

BLACKJACK VII3537d ago (Edited 3537d ago )

Problem with that is: You get what You pay for. Free is great, but I'd rather pay a small fee & get the kind of service XBL has given me with multiplayer, chat & demos. I have a friends across th U.S. & we can all talk as long as we want without a phone bill. $50 a year = $4.17 a month... I'd pay that for the demos alone, much less chat, multiplayer, marketplace & everything else. But yeah, I'd love for it to be $25... as long as I didn't lose any features.

ZombiesNJ3537d ago

I just think the $50 is a little steep. I realize that it does in fact make sense for you with your friend in the US to talk over that rather then the phone.

Bnet3433536d ago

$50 a YEAR isn't bad. I pay $80 a MONTH for cable TV. That's even worst, but no one complains about that right?
