CVG: Sony and Microsoft make their case.
I was expecting a rebuttal at the end of the article from a spokesman for Kinect... ...didn't happen.
Kinect it uh... It does stuff....Um.. Halo: Reach September 14th. Buy it.
Kinect is just fundamentally lame imo. There's a reason that controllers have been a part of the equation since the inception of gaming. You can simplify the controller, but you still need a bleeping controller. Really think Kinect will be the next HD-DVD add-on for the 360.
...Kinect camera better than PS3Eye however, addition of Move gives the advantage of 1:1 tracking without such a high cost on system resources. However, add a Move type controller to Kinect and it would be superior.
60 fps camera > 30 fps camera
Kinect would surely be able to track at 60FPS if they lowered the resolution (thats how the PSEye does it too) and it wouldnt need such a high resolution if it where just tracking an object like Move.
...dont just focus on one. You need to take it all into consideration. If the PS3Eye was so damned good then way is there only a handful of titles for it after 3-4 years?
Well peripherals rarely take off and become successful, and lets face it, most of the PSEye games were/are basic little PSN type mini games (aka crap).
PSE: 640x480 - 60fps 320x240 - 120fps Kinect: 640x480 - 30fps Depth sensor - 320x240 - 30 fps
If Sony have patented the move style controller with a light source on top, then Microsoft might not be able to make a controller like that. Which could very well mean that if Microsoft ever did make a controller for kinetc, it might never be as accurate as move
yeah ppl tend to become suddenly stupid when this argument comes up, their new controller would have to have no bluetooth, no IR, no light source etc etc etc because each one is flooded with patents from both nintendo and sony. The other reason why sony ended up using the light is because it doesn't infringe any nintendo patents and is camera based. all the kinect money went into the thermal aspects.
Add another peripheral to a camera that already costs $149 ???
Lol Sir that is so true and is it me I am seeing more and more Kinect supporters saying MS will release an additional controller...lol talk about a fool and their money will soon be parted!! They are practically begging MS to fleece them more and Kinect as not even launched. Seriously you could not make this stuff up...lol
Kinect will have it's tough times ahead. I imagine it will sell really really well this holiday and then hit the return/trade in bins in no time once people realize that it doesn't work how they thought it would. Games will become recycled shovelware before you even get through the launch titles. You will see games like Dance Central, Dance Party, Dance off, Dance Dance Dance... EA Fitness, Workout, Kinect fit, Personal Trainer... Rail Shooter, Rail Shooter, Rail Shooter, Fucking Rail Shooter.. MS will be forced into a corner where they would have to add a controller as an act of desperation, going back on their entire "you are the controller" platform. There is just no way that controller less gaming has the ability to have the variety of game types that we have become accustomed to. I mean, it seems like MS aren't even trying to appeal to the core audience, and I bet it's because they can't.
There's only a "handful" of games for the PS3eye because Sony failed to realize that there was a huge market for motion controller games. Doesn't necessarily connote that the camera isn't worth a damn. Sony's games division may be many things, but it's not a division that releases gaming devices that aren't cutting edge.
Bull The PSEye can do 120FPS at low res & 60FPS at hires Kinect does low res at 30FPS and not particularly well, Kinect is a joke and total lag fest.
PS eye does 60fps at 640x480. 120 fps at 320x240 http://www.myce.com/news/ca...
@Fishy Fingers the Kinect camera has half the frame rate of the pseye no matter what the resolution and FYI at low res the pseye can do a 120fps the kinect is not capable of this the pseye also has a wider angle of view than the kinect therefore can work in smaller spaces.
In order to add a Move / Wiimote is going to be at least another year - and by then the next gen info will be coming out. What it boils down to is that MS betted on Kinect - and it is clear that was misguided. It will take at least 1 to 2 years to correct this and add a motion controller like Move. And what will the cost be then? $150 + $50 = $200, just to match Move functionality and not drop support for the Kinect crowd. MS missed the mark by a mile with Kinect - and to make it worse the hyped the living daylights out of it - made grand promises of what will be achieved, sneered at the competition and is now left saying erm and ahh while the competition is getting glowing reviews and Kinect is being seriously questioned. Take RUSE - no Kinect support. And what was all the hoo ha about Kinect having such enormous dev support? It is not out yet and seems to lose dev support.
not buying either until I can play REAL games with these devices...(ie: Socom or Fable) than I will buy them for my consoles. until than just look at the crap shovelware...no thanx.. keep using the Wii until next year.
I'll be playing Heavy Rain, RE5 Gold Edition. Two games I haven't played before that should lend themselves well to Move.
you forgot ruse an RTS that as move controller as well
"The game I want to see the most [with Move] is one where I'm standing up and a whole horde of zombies are attacking me. I have in one hand the ability to pick them up and throw them at each other with some kind of levitation force, and in the other hand I have a weapon, an axe, a sword - I can choose what I want." ...Get this done, and I'm in.
I want to know how they do at the end of the year. I hope they will both fail so people can end this bullshit deciding on which one is better. You don't need them, there are better games coming out that you'd be better spending your money on
You know, if the EyeToy camera hadn't already been out in the wild for years, Sony would have developed a new Kinect comparable camera to go with the Move controller and had the best of both worlds. In the meantime, who wants to start a betting pool on how long it takes MS to add a controller option to Kinect... all this tech will converge for next gen and everyone will get both techs.
Move and kinect are both terrible and for casuals only//
RUSE with Move support says hi. "And R.U.S.E. would be exactly the same, if it wasn’t for Sony’s shiny, new Move controller. Players with a traditional controller may well become frustrated by the stickiness of the controls or lack of speed, yet with the motion controller everything becomes as simple as pointing at the screen. [..] Players with Move, however, will automatically own the better version of the game, with the motion control becoming intuitive almost instantly." If I read correctly - it seems that the reviewer thinks the Move version is superior.
If Kinect gets a controller, then MS 'Your the controller' goes out the window. Since EyeToy did 'Your the controller' years ago, I can't believe MS is trying to dupe gamers. By them saying that Kinect is new. It's an Eyetoy nothing more.
Sony has had the basic design for move for a while, they just needed to make it smaller. MS just made the Sega Activator 2.0, and it looks just as accurate as that crap hardware did.
I think move will come out on top when the dust settles, Its the best one on the market,And shows great promise in future games we will have best of both worlds, ds3 and move, sony is giving us options and sony will have games coming out for move only which will show what the move can do fully in games...
When Kudo was asked this question it seems like a bit of an excuse to me ~ --------Quote--------- "A lot of core gamers feel like there isn't much on Kinect that appeals to them, what would you say to them? Will they ever get a chance to play Gears or Halo with Kinect?" He replied with this "To me, I It's funny because everyone always has a different definition of 'core gamer'. I think somehow core gamers all-of-a-sudden got almost pigeonholed as people who only want to kill people. If you're not shooting somebody or chopping somebody in half you're not a core gamer anymore." ---------End Quote---------- The fact is that MS specifically CATERED to those gamers, and made the 360 mainly an TPS/FPS core gamer system. They really can't blame no one else but them selves for not offering diversity and expanding into other genres by spending money on building inhouse devs or even having what devs they had make different titles. It's their own fault for heavily relying on 3rd party and targeting/buying/paying out for TPS/FPS exclusivity (usually timed). So for Kudo to try and brush it off of MS's shoulders is quite BS and false.
Target your core audience, get them invested in Move first, then go after the casual audience based on strong word of mouth from the core, and with clever advertising. Target only the casual audience with advertising, while excluding the core. Ignore the core word of mouth and hope for the best! It's not just about Christmas sales, it's about the longevity of the tech. You're not really going to invest 100bucks on a peice of tech that you're only going to use at Christmas time?!
