Capcom's Keiji Inafune has revealed Devil May Cry 5 will have a "western touch" to make it more desirable to European and North American gamers.
John Marston kicking Dante's ass. Sweet. =D
LMFAO, taking it a little further than expected, here, have a bub, courtesy of the Q. But seriously, as if DMC4 wasnt dissapointment enough, now they gonna westernise a japanese game. About as logical as trying to make Bieber a ganster, just aint gonna happen.
How silly. Devil May Cry is a Japanese Game? The Game has western all written over it. Hideki Kamiya reached with Devil May Cry into the west. Even the original Dub is english. So where is this game japanese? Get your head out of your ass.
Yep. Exactly. The game isn't even Japanized to begin with. Now, they're gonna Westernize it? That's like taking a Westernized game like Dante's Inferno and trying to Westernize it again. Really, how does that even work? Turn Dante into a bulky space marine?
Just don't forget your root.
Whatever, Bayonetta was the spiritual sequel DMC3 needed and not the drudge fest of DMC4. Kamiya did what Capcom couldn't and didn't DMC5 has to be a reboot but westernizing a game in love with the west already? WTF? Bayonetta had all the daft verve and vigour we expect of a DMC game while DMC4 had little to offer and ended as a run through the same bosses twice as if to outline just how dry the ideas had run. Look to Kamiya's efforts and adapt them rather than look for western ideas that won't fit into a game rich in western references without seeming shoehorned in at this point.
They need to hit me with something never done before to get me back into the DMC fever.
Y dont they give DMC IP to Santa Monica. They are king of Hack and Slash now.
I second the rolling over and dying of Snakefist. I'll take Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden black and DMC1 over any God of War game.
Rip DMC.... meh ... it was dead when DMC4 came out...
They just need to bring Virgil back (and kill Nero and his love life) and then all Hell will break loose!
this is the problem, which i tried to explain in the other article http://n4g.com/news/597026/...
japanese devs westernizing thier games? BAD IDEA I think thats what FF13 suffered from too much western influence. To me it seems japanese devs have lost thier way this gen.....mostly
And yet you have staunchly Japanese devs like Level 5 cranking out anime, puzzle games (Layton) and very traditional JRPGs (Dragon Quest) with WORLDWIDE APPEAL, critical acclaim and astonishing sales, who continue to rake in money and consumer support year after year. Nintendo is another good example of this. The concepts behind their games are quite alien to the Western mindset. Plumbers and princesses? Whatever the f!ck Kirby is? These ideas are distinctly foreign and Japanese in their curiosity, yet the world loves them anyhow. It's no secret who has the recipe down (Level 5, Nintendo, Sony) and who is just flailing (SE, Capcom, Namco-B) at the Western audience. In a way it's almost insulting that Westerners are shoe-horned into these boxes of what we're "supposed" to like - guns, tits, burly men - and spoon-fed content that is only appealing to the average 15 year old. Something can be "childish" and still intriguing to adults (Pixar or Miyazaki films, for example, a good example of both Western and Eastern content that fits this bill).
Name me 3 Sony games that are distinctly Japanese that have been released to critical acclaim and astonishing sales. You can't so I don't know why you bothered to mention Sony. The only hits Sony has had has came from Western developers like Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Media Molecule, Guerilla Games, Insomniac etc All of Level 5's success has been on portables this gen and as everyone knows when you move on to develop on consoles it's a completely different beast. The only major console game they released on a console was White Knight Chronicles which received mediocre reviews and modest sales. The only one on your list you got right was Nintendo.
And WKC did well enough to warrant a sequel. It was one of the best selling home console JRPGs released in Japan this gen. It was also Level 5's first outing on "next gen" hardware and pretty damn ambitious. Regardless, a portable is STILL a console, whether you think so or not. It doesn't diminish their success simply because the games weren't in HD. As far as Sony, well, they ARE a Japanese company and they have backed some incredible games and talent of a Western Nature. So I'm not really sure what your point is. At least they understand that if they can't do it themselves, then get other people who know what they are doing and give them creative reign. And if you need a few "successful" titles, Demon's Souls (made in conjunction with SCEJ), EchoChrome and Patapon come to mind.
And not just what sales in Japan. If so then White Knight Chronicles was a failure in the west. Also the game couldn't have sold too well if they are offering the game for free to everyone who buys the sequel White Knight Chronicles 2. And since you consider portables consoles you should keep Square Enix name out of your mouth when talking about developers flailing around for westerners since their portable games have been STELLAR receiving good reviews and sales and none of them go out of their way to try to cater to the West. Also Square Enix realize they can't do it themselves hence the reason they bought Eidos and gave them CREATIVE REIGN to make solid titles like Batman Arkam Asylum, Just Cause 2, The Guardian of Light, and the upcoming Deus Ex and Batman AA 2. Capcom just released Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii earlier this year and it's a worldwide hit and that is a game that definitely doesn't cater to westerners. So to be honest I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.
DMC 5 I'm in.
the 1st 3 were great games that the west enjoyed i don't see the point of this, its kinda patronising to western gamers
it's ganna have a "cover system" isn't it? it gets worst. it's ganna have a tapped on multiplayer. that's not it. The story is ganna be completely irrelevant. they're ganna use words like fun or fun like words to blind most kids in American.
Trying to PLEASE THE WESTern Audience too much. Isnt that One of the Main problems with the Japanese Devs we were just discussing about in that earlier article? It's one of the big problems with Devs like Square. BUT THiS isnt automaticaly a bad thing. There's great Western devs and I wouldnt mind DMC taking a few cues from games like GoW or Japan's own Bayonetta in the fighting deparment. If they fix that a little bit the game should be Good. No new Character like NERo aswell that made the game even worse
Console development has stagnated in the East due to the popularity of handhelds. Instead of pushing the envelope, they've rested on their laurels. Producing cheap, low-quality shovelware with 2D sprites (ya know games I played 20 years ago on consoles) doesn't help anywhere but their bottom line. Storylines have always been cliched, predictable, and convoluted but it's really grown out of control this gen too. I've had far too many WTF moments this gen playing Eastern games. Adding insult to injury, most Japanese would rather play online with a little 3" screen than a HDTV. Don't know about you but I'm sick of a stiff neck playing them little bastards. I love JRPGs and mechs as much as the next guy, but I can't help feeling disappointed by the East this gen. I feel sorry for the Japanese game companies. They're really in a conundrum - make crappy HH games that sell in the East but get largely ignored in the West. Get further behind the technological 8-ball if you will. Or push the envelope, risk a commercial failure in the East on a console but hope it sells better in the West. It's almost as if they're forced to cater to 2 completely different demographics now.
I don't want to see anything God of war in devil may cry. DMC is it's own game.
And there goes my hype for Devil May Cry 3. Watch when they add more emphasis on the shooter machinics and tack on a random cover system out of nowhere. For christs sake Capcom. Open your damn eyes!
i can reassure you devil may cry 3 is a good game ( a little hard at times ) DMC 5 however ...
Surely though, if it was THAT GOOD a game, it would do pretty decently in the west? Sure, it won't sell like GTA, but if it really is that good it'll sell well?
Well across Xbox 360 and PS3, DMC4 sold around 3 million altogether. And that was when neither system had that big of an install base. If the game was released now I'd reckon it'd sell a good 3.5/5 million. I don't see why they're crying about the sales. EDIT: In my above post I meant Devil May Cry 5, not 3 lol wtf
Maybe they're crying about sales on the "western console."
DMC FPS confirmed!
sorry accidently clicked Disagree...sorry
Ucht I hope not.
So it will be crap like DMC4? No thanks. Best in the series were DMC1/3.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO O OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO O OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO O OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO O OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO O OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Just go back to the awesomeness of DMC3:SE. Awesome weapons, Badass bosses, A storyline that made some sense, over-the-top cutscenes with cheesy one-liners, multiple characters- with proper levels. No "go through the level... but backward" sh!t. DMC is one of my favourite game series'. please don't f**k it up by westernizing it up
Hell yeah, playing as Vergil would be insane! Yamato is an insane weapon!
Its too bad Crapcom hates Vergil. They gave Yamato to Nero >_< God i hate DMC 4 so much probably more so then DMC 2 (even DMC 2 is starting to look better then DMC 4 by the minute). They should probably retcon DMC 4 and say Dante was having a bad dream while he was drunk or sumthing.
not even remotely. These guys just don't get it do they.
Oh good , i dont think i've heard the exact same words giving birth to any good game this gen
SE and Capcom... WTF!? Are you doing? Trying to ruin the great franchises you once had... Ugh.
And then Japanese developers wonder why they are going under...
i'm not a fan of japanese style games, but they really should stick to what made them good in the first place. if it's outdated, improve it, not mimmick your competition. this 'japanese games must be westernized" thing smells like insecurity. your game did sell a lot when it still wasn't westernized right?
The japanese market is shrinking. Games are an industry and their main purpose is to generate profit, why can't you people come to grips with that?
If that's the case then they should just make another FPS since that's the top selling genre in the west right now.
and another franshise ruined... greetings from FF sigh -.-
FFS dmc 1/3 were the best without western influence!
It's not in development yet? :S.......
DMC4 still top 3 action games I played this gen. Gameplay wise i think it was really solid maybe a touch up on the story telling but it wasnt that bad as ppl make it seem.
how can it be in top 3: god of war 3, bayonetta and ninja gaiden 2 are easily better games.
well maybe its top 4 1.UC2 2.GoW3 3.UC 4.DMC4 bayonetta not same league as DMC sry
only when speaking sales . Otherwise , Bayonetta was easily better than DMC4
here we go. off my radar now.
Thats perfectic, you don't even know anything about it yet......
don't need to. i liked dmc when it was made by the japanese. if i want a westernized version of it i would assume a western developer would make a new ip similar. if it was proclaimed to be a collab with someone first like castlevania maybe. but even the cats working on castlevania said there original idea was a burley no story type protaganist until kojima said change him.
I enjoyed all the games even DMC4. Yeah it wasn't brilliant but I liked it cause I'm a fan of the series. I think for them to get it right with DMC5 they need to be able to appeal to gamers, much like what Bayonetta did. They need to show that they can adapt. Westernising the game more wouldn't make it a DMC game, it could very well alienate its current fanbase. Hopefully they will find a balance and it will work out ok. Either way, I'm glad that they will be making another game.
I can't believe it..
This IS the the reason why japanese games are declining in quality and sales. By making theam appeal to the western audience, these games loose the appeal they had to their original target audience, BUT western gamers still don't find these games appealing and won't buy them. This reduces the fan base of the game/series and doesn't create enough new consumers to increase sales, thus actually lowering the sales.
Plenty enough western games to whet western gamers' appetites. I want Japanese games to stay Japanese. There's still a big market of fans of that sort of game. The reason they haven't been selling as well, sometimes, is because a lot of Japanese games are trying too hard to be western. Therefore they don't appeal enough to the western audience OR the japanese/japanophile audience.
the only good japanese developers are platinum games and the first party nintendo & sony studios. everything else went to shit...square enix, capcom , team ninja, teh star ocean developer...etc.
These idiots are going to put a multiplayer mode in the DMC. Capcom are bunch of fools this generation.
Don't forget stupid Quick Time Events, gratuitous T&A (though DMC 4 did that already with Gloria/Trish and Lady) and subpar gameplay. Multiplayer/Co-op i wouldn't like in DMC. Imagine if you have a sucky player as your partner...they'd just hold you back. I could only imagine how awful Bloody Palace will be. I just don't get why people want multiplayer in DMC. Dante is suppose to be a one man army, a recking force. He doesn't need anyone's help. Anyway, that's the route i think Crapcom is going for. Making the game seems so alien that its no longer recognizable as DMC and just sum generic hack and slash with an emo Final Fantasy character as their main lead character (Nero).
This is the problem with some Japanese Devs. We do not want a western style game from them. We want a japanese style.
2 handhelds: 47mil sales in Japan 3 consoles: 17mil There's your problem in a nutshell. Japanese devs need us western gamers to break even now. Before, a traditional game would garner 1-2 mil in sales before ever getting localized. We western gamers were pure profit. Now they're getting 500k and we're suddenly a part of their spreadsheet.
just make it like DMC3=win!
DMC3 is the best in the series.
great idea! /s Why because it has worked so well in the past? just a fyi it hasn't worked and all it does is drive away your core fans who like the games the way they were. But who cares anyways it is another Capcom POS in the making that will have half the content locked. I haven't bought a Capcom game since RE5 and after the butcher job they did to that and the locked MP, I swore to never support them again, and I haven't.
I'm sick of Japanese developers trying to make games more "western" when western people want Japanese games more Japanese. Plus, if they didn't buy the first four Devil May Crys, what makes you think they'll buy the fifth? Look at Final Fantasy XIII. It sold more in Japan than in North America. So why bother trying to please North Americans? Why not keep it more Japanese so more Japanese people will buy it? Also, a lot of the western audience who didn't buy Final Fantasy XIII didn't buy it because it wasn't Japanese enough! Bah, just...bah. Idiots, all of them. They aren't the only ones either. There are tons of companies who see poor sales in one part of the world or on console as opposed to PC, but instead of making it better so they can please even more of the fans who bought older games in the series, they make it worse by trying to cater to the region or console it didn't sell well on. It's like, "wow, we sold 10 million copies in Japan! And only 10000 in North America. I know, instead of making it more Japanese and selling 11 million, we'll ruin it for the Japanese people who actually buy it, and bring our Japanese sales to half that, because we can double our North American sales to 20000! Wow, amazing business sense there!" Same goes for Dragon Age 2. The first sold best on PC and was a lot more of a PC game, looked better, ran better and played better on PC. Therefore, their sales numbers were low on console, because no one wanted to play it on console because it was a PC game. So instead of improving the PC game even more in the second to sell even more to PC audiences (I didn't hear them complaining about the Dragon Age sales numbers) they instead try to consolize it, thus alienating the biggest fanbase they had for the game IN HOPES that the sequel will sell a few more copies on console. They always try to play to their weaknesses instead of their strengths. Seriously, idiots.
Gr8 point, focus on ur strengths, please ur fan base, and then worry about the other guys
