Review Round-up: BioShock

Without further ado, here's a gathered peek at what the critics are saying about BioShock. To be perfectly honest, the scores and comments you're about to see are, well, unprecedented.

They are also likely to exist as a truly monumental yardstick of quality that almost all succeeding FPS offerings (regardless of host platform) are going to struggle to reach, let alone surpass.

Freaking craziness!! I never thought I would see the day a game gets this level of universal acclaim. Well done Ken Levine! I bet the entire Bioshock team couldn't be happier with these results.

It will be interesting to see how (or if) all this critical acclaim will translate into major console/ major hardware sales...Also, it will be real interesting (in light of the games reception) to see what happens to the console war if this(as rumors have suggested) does eventually appear on PS3.

Rumours rumours.

In that view, MGS4 will be on 360 also. And FFXIII, and all those other games from the PS3

EDIT (to your post below)

The Bioshock rumour was made up by a Playstation magazine.
What's so hard to understand if developer says it's

360 and Vista exclusive? Then the rumour is gone, right?

MGS4 can just be done on a 360. It might not fit on one DL-DVD, but it just can be done. I don't mind playing with 2 DVD's. I think MS has already secured Bioshock and for sure after these reviews. They want Bioshock 2 to be MS exclusive also. Money enough for them.

Wasn't Dead Rising, Lost Planet and some other 3rd party games also coming to the PS3? Seems they are 360 exclusive also. And even IF a game comes to the PS3 a year later... It sells 360's now. Because BIoshock is new, fresh. In a year it'll be 'old' and only sell to excisting PS3 owners. It won't move units that much as it'll do now for 360

would it have an effect on the console war if it goes to PS3, it would only effect the war if it stays exclusive, which it likely will if it sells well enuff on 360. Considering how good the reviews are I think it will do fine on 360, thus it will unlikely be ported to PS3 at the extra cost.

My point is that this is really an unprecedented gaming situation, and at this point with the knowledge that this is a super-fantastic game, maybe one of the best ever created AND it is only on the 360 and PC maybe it will end up wildly swinging the console war in the 360s favor...Then again maybe there is a secret PS3 version (just as good, better, or worse). Any of these factors could wildly balance things out or throw them even more out of whack. This is really interesting, is all I'm saying.

To Mart:
Actually no, Bioshock to PS3 rumor has nothing to do with MGS4 on 360. I do think 360 may well see MGS online, not MGS4. It seems that Kojima has embeded too many little inside jokes to the MGS4 game for it translate properly. Bioshock to my knowledge has no such similar type content. Therefor, it is simply up to the developers (unless MS is/has permanent exclusive rights to the Bioshock property.

Edit: I never mentioned the space problem/tech limitations which may or may not exist. I am talking about the INSIDE JOKES and irony found within the game.
IE the tongue-in-cheek stuff Kojima folded into the game to make twists on the real-life console (and real wars) going on today. THAT stuff will not translate to the 360.

felidae3988d ago (Edited 3988d ago )

the game is a little overhyped. Even some editors at 1up say that.

We'll see.

I really don't believe you own a 360. Even with the best games you're trying to downplay things.

You're a PS3 fanboy in disguise, trying to be just under the radar of being noticed as a fandroid. Because you're comments are always negative towards the 360. You're German, right? Going to Leipzig? I'll be there also. Lets drink some coffee to see if you're not Ken that retired recently from Sony

This game is insane. Overhyped? Thats why ALL reviewers give these kind of reviewmarks? RIGHT

hype –verb (used with object)

1. to stimulate, excite, or agitate (usually fol. by up): She was hyped up at the thought of owning her own car.
2. to create interest in by flamboyant or dramatic methods; promote or publicize showily: a promoter who knows how to hype a prizefight.
3. to intensify (advertising, promotion, or publicity) by ingenious or questionable claims, methods, etc. (usually fol. by up).
4. to trick; gull.

None of that applies to Bioshock. The game genuinely great. Look that up.

yep, i'm german (is my english really that bad?)

yes, i do own a 360.

no, i'm not a fanboy of any system.

yes, going to Leipzig with some friends from gamerZpoint, a videogame store i work for.

About Bioshock. It's sad to see that all the people freak out, just because someone says something (little) negative about the game.

For me, it's not a problem that some games wowed me more than Bioshock. I think it's because i've seen so many good games since the 360 brought us the Next Generation. I've played Oblivion, and damn this game looks amazing, Gears of War, which needs no comment, Ghost Recon, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword demo ... so many games with amazing graphics.

The moment i first played Gears or Motorstorm, i just thought WTF .. that looks so much better than anything i've played before. For me, that is not the case with Bioshock. The game looks really good and the atmosphere is amazing. I'll buy it and enjoy it.

As i said before .. sorry if i stepped on millions of users feet.

I am a games journalist, I get plenty of games for free and when I buy them, I usually get second hand copies. In this case on the strength of the demo I will certainly be making an exception and buying a copy during the release window.

It raises the bar on every level, the sound design on the demo is arguably the best there has ever been in a game, visually it is stunning and from the moment you step out of the water, the atmosphere grips you like a vice.

I have a hunch that this game will be a classic and a benchmark on the same scale (or bigger) as Half Life 2. I hope this comes to every machine capable of running it, as it deserves to be appreciated by as wide an audience as possible.

I've been playing videogames since Pong in the '70s and have owned almost every console at one time or another (don't have a PS3...yet) and you know when you're playing a game that is going to change videogaming with its greatness. I think most gamers can remember being in the presence of a masterpiece of gaming as fondly as watching thier favorite movies for the first time or hearing their favorite music. Bioshock is a masterpiece! I can say it after just playing the demo! It is that good! It is amazing! Add Big Daddy to the list of videogame icons like Lara Croft, Master Chief, Mario, Metroid, Cloud, etc. It is jaw dropping great! Believe the hype!

A comment string immune to PS3 fanboys. We only get these once a quarter guys - this site is so ridiculously pumped full of these blind PS3 followers it's nice to see an article that they cannot spin.

I wonder what they're going to do when the rest of the lineup starts showing up and crushing in reviews? Maybe they will stay quiet just like this.

Have fun "playing" HOME.

TheMART3988d ago

Or better...

@ Homo as I like to call it. Doing that girly wiggle-dance as a guy must make one get to doubt about his gender, right PS3 fanboys? Just a Sony gimmick to distract from what its about on a console.

Games, online and content in general. The 360 kicks the PS3 on all those points.

With Bioshock for sure. Be shocked, the 360 outsold the PS3 the first 6 months of the year. The PS3 spiked sales one month. The 5 months left the 360 will be on top again. Sold by what its about. The games!

Bioshock is so freakin' great...
