Agreed. Anything less than 10 is blasphemy!

IMHO, this game set the bar for 2D adventure games.
I can't remember how many times I played through it. Maybe a dozen?

If they released it as a new game today, I'd gladly pay the inflation-adjusted price. It was just that good.

truely epic game
always a big fan of the metroid games. This one tops my fav list with the original metroid prime coming in second.

Off topic, I always thought it was funny how when the snes came out the games had this "super" designation tacked on to the name. Super ghouls and ghosts, super castlevania, super metroid, super star wars/empire/return... etc. Then when the N64 came out it was all about 64. wipeout64, mario64 etc.

Shame they didnt continue the trend with the cube or wii.

Absolutely a 10
This was one game that got it all right from the start. If patches exist back then, this game didn't need one.

Other than RPGs, Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night are my two favorite 2D games. As long as you count Zelda: A Link to the Past as at least partly an RPG. (Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 would be up there as well)

I can never get into these games. Need to try it again soon.

One of the all time greats. The game was dripping with atmosphere

Agreed. This is my favorite game of all time. So far my best 100% speedrun is 1hr 42min but thats with mockballs, shortcuts and a murder beam on Ridley. Haven't tried to finish the game getting everything normally since I was little. Might have to try that again. I have it on my psp so I can always have it on the go but I would gladly pay for it if it came out on a DS or something.

My favorite track in the game. I remember i would just leave the game on in the red area for a while and just listen to the music

Yes sir awsome game indeed!!
Still play this game from time to time. It's still impressive. Does anyone know if you can download this on the Wii? I guess i could google it

Yep, its on the VC and for $8.00 its a steal!
Joe Bomb  +   1830d ago
Nintendo could charge $20.00 on the virtual console and get away with it for this game.

I wish they still made games like this, the last one I could think of is Batman Arkham Asylum. You know, find a new item and head back to a spot where you know you need that item. I guess I love backtracking...as long as its done right!

Epic final boss, with a twist!
Soul Train  +   1830d ago
Great Game!
Unicron  +   1830d ago
No dialogue.
No real plot.
No character development.
Mostly linear.
Tons of backtracking.
No MP!
Can be finished in less than 5 hours.

And yet still, it really is one of the greatest games of all time and a staple of my collection. Infinitely replayable. What has been lost this gen that prevents people from replaying great titles for fun I ask!

Probably the fact lots of people dont pay for fun anymore.

They play for trophies and acheivements, they play for gamerscore, headshots, killcams, teabagging, bragging rights, teamscores, leveling up, XP, double XP on weekends....

Most games that dont have these things, people dont want to know about.

I myself, pray I never fall for this trap, where the gaming pleasure itself takes a backseat to the pursuit of extending ones e-penis.

Thats why my favourite game on Xbox is still Tenchu, not for the costumes you unlock, or the items, weapons or that bloop sound FX you get for an acheivement, (I do like that noise but, can you get it on iTunes as a ringtone?) but because the simple act of stalking a guard for 3 minutes before dropping silently behind him and opening his throat never, ever gets old for me.

In short, its fun and thats the only reason I have to play it.

PS
Yeah SM rocks. I would say the gradual aquirement of skills coupled with great level design allowing the use of those skills is why its so good. As some above said, thats why Batman was so good, picking up a new ability and going "Ahh, I know where I can use this."

Actually there is a plot. The game has a better plot than, idk, Gears or something.
And I think it's the least linear 2D game I've ever played, IMO.

It's awesome.

The biggest flaw with this game (which is really a product of the era it was released in) is the fact that there's no way you could find all the secrets or even get all of the upgrades (as in complete the game 100%) without a strategy guide. Even Final Fantasy VII had this problem. So if you played the game and didn't have the strategy guide, you'd never get your money's worth from the game.

That said, I still play this and it's just a wonderful game. I prefer Symphony of the Night, though.
Unicron  +   1830d ago
SOTN is near perfect. Only a lame final boss ruins it for me.

my favourite 2D game of all time.......ok well maybe Braid too
Quadrix  +   1830d ago
Only thing I don't like about Super Metroid is the controls. They're not bad, but since I played Fusion before I played this game, that made it pretty difficult to get used to. Fusion improved the wall jumping and aiming controls a lot.

Super Metroid, Super Castlevania, Chrono Trigger and Super Contra were my greatest games for the SNES. Loved them to death.
MhXSoLO  +   1830d ago
Super Metroid is one of my favorite game and guys don't forget DONKEY KONG COUNTRY also was one of the best late in the SNES life cycle that blow everyone away. I remember i beat that game like more than a hundred times. Got that one Wii VC awhile back and still love it.
