Microsoft: DX10.1 Will Support Current Cards

Microsoft's Sam Glassenberg told Next-Gen in a phone interview, "DX10.1 fully supports DX10 hardware. No hardware support is being removed....It's strictly a superset. It's basically an update to DX10 that extends the hardware functionality slightly."

"All the hardware is still supported, all the games still run, all the features are still there, we've just simply extended the feature set and the lifetime of the API," he said.

Glassenberg also addressed rumors that DX10 -- currently exclusive to Vista -- would be coming to Microsoft's Windows XP. It seems that DX10's Vista exclusivity is unlikely to change.

well maybe if opengl 3 is xp compatable it will make ms think again about moving dx10 over too.

ShiftyLookingCow3443d ago

that depends on how nvidia and ati implement ogl drivers, and there is a good chance they are not going to ignore xp as many gamers still use it

I STILL DIDNT PAY A PENNY FOR MY VIDEO CARDS! LOL cool.

I was worried because I put so much into my DX10 card currently. It sounded kind of ridiculous in the first place because DX9 cards always supported 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and so on.

ShiftyLookingCow3443d ago (Edited 3443d ago )

there were no 9.1 and so on, and DX 9.0c was not supported by older DX9 cards. But I agree I invested on 8800 and I want it to last more than a year.

Obviously... the articles found about the DirectX 10.1 not supporting DirectX 10 video cards was taken out of context by anti-microsoft crowd... at not remotely interested in using DirectX on first place...

That's not the point. From what I gather, early adopters are going to be missing out on some new features...DX1O pratically hasn't even been implemented yet, for Christ's sake!

Lucky I procrastinated on my PC upgrade.

"DX1O pratically hasn't even been implemented yet" You mean there are not many games using DX10? BTW procrastinating PC upgrades is a sin punishable by hellfire, just kidding if you were ok with older hardware and you have consoles I guess it actually saves you money and time.

Well, I haven't bought a Video Card for 2 years now and don't intend to so until Fallout 3 arrives but still, this is good news for many PC users.
