Are video game ads misleading us too often?

Which? Conversation writes: Video game companies seem happy to hoodwink us over their products. The latest culprit is Final Fantasy creator Square Enix, who has just had their advertisement banned for being misleading.

This is the latest in a string of video games that have been accused of misadvertising, so why do we put up with it?

If an advertisement is all that it takes to convince even one-single person on this planet to buy a game then it's their own problem.

greeneggsnsam3015d ago

Good point, but it really it just one step from a lie. And that's not right.

blizzard_cool3015d ago (Edited 3015d ago )

Actually I don't think it's bad since the consumer should have enough brains to check on the product before buying it. I mean, how stupid can you get(not meant to the poster but to the consumers)?

techie3015d ago

Yes, well...people see an ad and they go to a store wanting to buy it. Their only other point of advice are store clerks..whoo know nothing. But misleading CGI ads are just annoying.

Only the ones that say "Only On Xbox360"

Lifendz3015d ago

I haven't bought a videogame based solely off the ad since...well....Who Framed Roger Rabbit on the NES. Needless to say (for those in my age group), I learned my lesson.

My only gripe would be that some videogame commercials don't even show a hint of actual gameplay. Others advertise a game that's one genre like it were another (see HALO War). But hey, if you plop down 65 bucks based on a commercial where you don't even see the game, well I hope your a grandparent buying a game for your grandchild because there's no excuse for that otherwise.

♥ I don't even see any videogame ads on tv. I only watch MTV and Showtime! So that probably why ♥

ZombieNinjaPanda3015d ago

Only MTV?

Well that explains quite a bit.

Immortal3213015d ago

I feel that companies have a responsibility to be honest to their customers and by showing footage from a version that doesn't appear on their product is indeed being less than honest.

secretsea3015d ago

It should also be unacceptable but we don't have actual journalists to ask the tough questions.

aceofspades3015d ago

when they used the ps3 footage of final fantasy 13 to advertise for the xbox360 version(inferior) of final fantasy 13 that was uncalled for. so yes alot of game advertisements are misleading.

Dance3015d ago

they could have used 360 version bayonetta to advertise for the ps3

aceofspades3015d ago

maybe. just hate false advertising man ;)

RememberThe3573015d ago

If you get suckered into a crappy game then it's your fault. Look up the game and what people are saying about it.
