Edge: Tooling Up Torchlight

Edge: Torchlight’s success took even its creators by surprise. Designed to introduce players to the world in which Runic Game’s upcoming MMORPG would be set, the Diablo-esque RPG resonated with players craving an accessible dungeon crawler, and left many fans demanding a sequel – this time with a multiplayer mode.

We talked to Max Schaefer, co-founder of Runic, about how the studio has adjusted to the demands of working on not one, but two Torchlight projects, and the advantages and potential pitfalls of designing a free-to-play online game.
