NeoGAF user De-Mon is claiming to have knowledge that tomorrow during their Gamescom press conference, either Sony or Electronic Arts will announce Mass Effect’s shift to PlayStation 3. He says it’s either going to happen tomorrow, or in print magazines a few weeks later.

Why the disagree's? You know a big game tradeshow has started when big ass rumors like this appear the night before the event. I don't know how true this is but EA seem to have got into bed with Sony recently so it's entirely possible. That 38 million install base is too juicy for EA to ignore. No doubt they are at least considering it.

Those are first party owned IP's. Mass Effect isn't,the IP belongs to Bioware who are owned by EA a mainly multiplat company.
Know what contracts were inked behind closed doors. I would think that if they WERE going to port ME, they'd have done it already
I just finished playing uncharted 3 on my wii, lol but anyway i agree with 52 Mass Effect isn't 1st party, the game is already multiplat anyway. Maybe it will come to the ps3 maybe it won't, but we can't speculate just because some random a$$ user on some random a$$ website said so, who is this De-Mon guy anyway ?

The whole point of the Mass Effect trilogy is that it's your continuing character/story and while it is true that EA published Mass Effect 2, it is also true that Microsoft published the first game and can more than likely block the first game for being re-released on the PS3.
No there wasn't.Microsoft published Mass Effect 1 for bioware but its up to bioware on what consoles they want to put Mass Effect on.When bioware announced a trilogy for 360,they were still independent from EA and had a good relationship with MS.
However bioware can still make Mass Effect 2 and 3 on PS3 while Mass Effect 1 would need to be renamed for a different PS3 version.Everyone knows bioware is happy with the Mass Effect sales and its their choice,not EA,Sony or Microsoft.If Mass Effect comes to PS3 I don't care since its my favorite game on 360 and it will be my favorite on PS3 as well

Exactly. EA published Mass Effect on PC, do people not remember that? EA owns the Mass Effect IP, they can do what they want with it. It is most likely that Microsoft penned a deal for publishing right on 360 and thats it. Similar to Sony and Final Fantasy 7.
But since the property is owned by Bioware (not EA or MS) they can release it for which ever platform they want. Regardless if MS published it or not.
Ninja Gaiden 2, for example, was published by MS but Sigma 2, which was the same game save for some content changes, came to the PS3. So it's very likely that EA could release both games on the PS3.
As for the story, ME 2 does a good job of recapping the first game while being it's own self-contained narrative. Bioware even said that they designed the game where people completely new to the series could play and still know the story.
We don't know the full details of what deal was agreed apon, but I really don't see the point in Bioware wasting recources at this point on porting a three year old game, along with it's 7 month old sequal when they should be focusing more on DLC for ME2, and of course the development of Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2.
If the Mass Effect games are ported to the PS3, I wouldn't expect that to happen untill after Bioware completes the third game.

If ME does get ported to PS3, they should include all of them. Eventhough you don't really need to play ME1 to understand ME2 (well you kinda do, but there will be a lot of reading to do), but the fact is that how you play ME1 will have different results on ME2 and ME3 later on (possibly the most interesting aspect of the ME trilogy) therefore, making it worth while to complete the trilogy.
Well let hopes the rumor is true because ME is one of the best WRPG around and it would be a treat for any RPG fans who only own PS3.

If MS and Bioware had an exclusivity agreement for Mass Effect 1 (before EA acquired Bioware), then Bioware would have to show, in court, that their port to PS3 would be a different game.
That's how Ninja Gaiden 2 on Xbox is Ninja Gaiden: Sigma 2 on PS3.
