Did Bioware and Bethesda Kill the JRPG?

DualShockers writes: "The 1990s seem, to many people’s recollection, to be the hay day of Japanese-style RPGs. During that time we saw the release of many games that gamers today feel are some of the best in the genre. The Final Fantasy franchise in particular moved a lot of units and worked its way into a lot of people’s hearts with the move to 3D visuals in Final Fantasy VII. Even with this graphical change, one thing remained the same - no matter how many Final Fantasies or other JRPGs were released, they were still designed from the ground up with a specific philosophy in mind.

They had pre-defined stories and characters, with the developers asking the player to go on a journey with them, to see these characters interact and tell a story themselves. In very few instances did the genre ever deviate from that design philosophy. But, it got to the point where, apparently, gamers wanted more freedom."

NO.
FPS killed jrpgs and most of the other genres.

Chadness5004d ago

Where do you think the idea for an first-person combat system came from? Or the RPG shooter, like Mass Effect? My point exactly.

rockleex5004d ago (Edited 5004d ago )

Think they must "westernize".

The small developers still make great JRPGs, but they don't have AAA production so most people overlook them.

Square Enix spent 4-5 years and MILLIONS of dollars spent on a single "NON-JRPG".

Not only did they fail to deliver what their fans expected, they failed miserably at appealing to "western" and "shooter crowd" tastes.

What I hated most about Square Enix's decision was that they didn't even TRY to release a full and proper JRPG on the HD consoles before deciding for themselves that JRPG's aren't "in" anymore.

NecrumSlavery5004d ago

Well how are the sales of WRPGs in JP compared to JRPGs in the US/EURO?

I think the quality of gameplay and story in WRPGs are improving. Most JRPGs stick to the same routine and that just doesn't fly anymore. It can't be emo-boy-gets-sword-saves-world anymore. You got to have something new and exciting.

rockleex5004d ago

It downgraded the gameplay.

FFXIII did not even stick to winning formulas either.

It took away everything you ever liked in RPGs.
Wandering around the world, conversing with NPCs.
Doing side missions.
Finding out hidden places and unique events that only happened in certain places at a certain point in the game.

The only thing it kept was the ability to upgrade your character's fighting abilities. But they even turned that into a chore!

The only side missions you can do don't even open up till you beat the game, by then they're not even "side missions" anymore.

Note, you can do about 3 side missions about halfway through the game. But the game purposely restricts your characters' upgrading abilities to FORCE you to move on and beat the game before you can come back and even stand a chance in the rest of the side missions.

Redempteur5004d ago

@rockleex

actually half of the missions are doable BEFORE completing chapter 13..it's just a matter of stratégy and upgrades

Redempteur5004d ago

love how i got a disagree for telling the truth ... ..it's on youtube folks

nycredude5004d ago

Umm correct me if I am wrong but ME 1 and ME 2 didn't sell as much as FF13, a JRPG hated on by lots of people right?

Not hating I love both ME games playing 2 now.

AndrewRyan5004d ago

Millions of people bought FF13 because Final Fantasy has a great track record. A lot of those people were very disapointed, and before buying the next one, I bet they will rent it or look up gameplay videos, or even not get it at all. (I'm speaking of the next multiplatform FF.)

Game-ur5004d ago

It wasn’t murder, it was suicide.

crzyjackbauer5004d ago

That's right JRPGS killed them selfs
there hasn't been a good JRPG the generation

SkyGamer5004d ago

True but there is one gem in the mix and that is Lost Odyssey. I loved that game. A true love/hate game as one moment I wanted to/have thrown the controller against the wall and the other I got very sad. Of course I'm going to say that I didn't cry but there might have been a few tears eked out on some of those dream sequences.

Eamon5004d ago

Lost Odyssey's gameplay was great because Sakaguchi stuck to his Final Fantasy roots. However the story is a different case lol. It was quite bad.

I just wish Square-Enix will remember the old Final Fantasy and go back to it's traditional gameplay in Final Fantasy XV.

FPSes are simply more to the tastes of North American males, who prefer steroid riddled space marines shooting things as opposed to spiky haired teens saving the world.

And no, Bioware and Bethesda didn't kill the JRPG. Pretty sure that JRPGs still top the charts in you know, JAPAN. How did Oblivion, Fallout and Mass Effect do there or in other pan-Asian countries? Not so hot.

It's a culturally centric genre. It doesn't have to appeal to Westerners to thrive. My God, it's like the author of this article hasn't even seen the DS/ PSP/ PS3 (now, the first 3 years were pretty dry) library.

A related point. Guess what else isn't tearing up the silver screen in North America? Bollywood films and Hong Kong action flicks. Guess they're "dead" too. Suppose I should write an article and alert the proper media authorities now.

How egocentric of a society have we become that EVERY culture in the world must somehow satisfy our tastes or be made irrelevant? China is a bigger consumer market than the U.S. anyhow, and I'm pretty sure that the revenue they bring in from Hello Kitty MMOs each year shits all over anything Bioware has ever made.

Edit @ Colonel. It's a generalization, which are for the most part true. I myself love eccentric and Japanese/ foreign games, but recognize that I am in the consumer minority in NA.

Edit @ Hitman. I read the article to the end, and if it was your intent to discuss the enduring nature of JRPGs, then you probably should have produced a better title to accompany the piece. "JRPGs are alive and well, Bioware be damned!" or something. This article is a perfect example of a title made for hits. Something that we see on N4G each and every day. Your point, while well made is lost in the conflagration caused by your incendiary heading. I guarantee that most readers will not be as dutiful as I in reading and then responding to your piece. Food for thought.

Colonel-Killzone5004d ago (Edited 5004d ago )

You're post was kind of ignorant because not all North American Males care about FPS. And honestly most of the FPS are over run by children and young teens not really that many adults.

Also look at the sales in North America for FF13 it sold very well here. I get what you're saying though but instead of making it seem like it is every single male it would have been much better if you said most.

On Topic:

Anyway in my opinion JRPG been lacking because of the developers themselves. They are trying to appeal to everyone instead of just focusing on the fans. I always say the fans comes first... But it seems this generation a lot of companies are lacking to see that.

Edit: @Chris399 Fair enough I guess. Besides You do have a point mostly everyone in America cares about is Call of duty which is a bit sad in my opinion.

Hitman07695004d ago

Thanks for commenting on just the headline but there's actually an article attached in case you didn't know. Cheers!

ps3best5004d ago

is a terrible fucking game

Chris3995004d ago (Edited 5004d ago )

but I'm sure that it and other trashy MMOs - Flyff, Perfect World - produce buckets of cash in the East; enough to make Bioware blush with envy.

And Hitman, it was my initial assumption that you wrote the article by the way that you responded. But I'm pretty sure you didn't, so ignore the possessive phrasing of my last post :) And again, the whole article seems to gloss over the fact that the only markets in the world where JRPGs truly matter are Japan/ Asia. We were lucky to have had such a hayday in the PSX/ PS2 era with a foreign genre.

Jrpgs left in the past. dey must innovate

madjedi5004d ago (Edited 5004d ago )

So does being a evil shepard have any different ending than being a neutral or saintly shepard? If not jrpgs have had mutli endings for yrs, jrpgs must innovate, again jrpgs style is different than wrpgs so custom characters is a no no.

Dark Cloud started altering your environment/town last gen, multi endings again done, ludicrisly overpowered secert bosses/dungeons done, voice overs done.

So why is it people will sit there and scream innovation at devs, and not have the slightest clue what needs to be innovated.

Oh wait innovation you mean the new wrpg trend add guns and/or 4 player coop to a purely single player designed experience, gotcha.

I put about 15-20 hrs into dragon age, absolutely nothing screamed new and innovative to me. The only thing i noticed immediately is slightly better than ps2 level graphics, but i understand it was never meant to be a graphics beast, just like jrpgs get bitched at for.

@ramber on my comment 30.1 change the second that to they and it should make perfect sense, you really couldn't look at a word, see the general idea described in the sentence. And replace the incorrectly used word with one that makes the statement reasonable, wow.

tinybigman5004d ago

mass effect is the only WRPG series i like the rest don't hold my interest. i have however played more JRPGs this gen then WRPG ones.

Hitman07695004d ago

This is a great look at the various viewpoints shared by both development styles and the way they have been clashing lately. I also agree that the two should learn from each other more-so than hate on each other and that both have great unique ideas to add to the genre overall.

Game-ur5004d ago

I think MegaTen games are getting closer to the middle ground, especially Devil Survivor.

Chadness5004d ago

I hate to see both sides of the fence go head to head with each other, like it is some kind of race or competition. Both sides have something to offer the other and they would do well to take tips from the other, whether or not they want to admit it.

ClownBelt5004d ago

Lol nah. Japanese developers themselves killed their JRPG genre.

Shaman5004d ago

NO,JRPG killed JRPG...they just did not want to evolve this gen and thats what really is truth in this case.To bad,i hope they come back, those are very capable and talented bunch of devs but they just could not cope with new gameaplay additions, budget and tech...

Games4M - Rob5004d ago

i completely agree. JRPG's used to be the ones pushing the games pushing teh RPG boundary but now they are stuck in a rut.

silvacrest5004d ago

JRPGs have become to western, they need to stay true to their original formula which actually worked, we all remember the old school JRPGs, there is a reason why there is overwhelming outcry for HD remakes

rambler5004d ago (Edited 5004d ago )

@Shaman

You obviously haven't been paying any attention. JRPG's have been doing nothing but trying to evolve this generation, and that is mostly the problem. They have been trying to be too western for a long while now. There hasn't been a game I consider a traditional jrpg released on a console for many years (they have all been on handheld).

BioWare Could be Working on More than Just Dragon Age Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4

Earlier this year, BioWare was hit with layoffs as part of a downsizing of parent company Electronic Arts, but fans have been reassured that the next Mass Effect game hasn’t been impacted. Likewise, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s development is still churning along, with BioWare putting it at the forefront of its focus and rumors suggesting that it could launch sometime later this year. Fans might be getting another look at the long-in-development Dragon Age: Dreadwolf at the Summer Game Fest in June.

If the recently posted job offering for a temporary development manager is any indication, BioWare could have yet another surprise up its sleeve for when Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf are nearing completion. This mystery BioWare video game could truly be anything, from another spin-off of its two major properties to something entirely new. All there is to go on at the moment is a vague mention in the job posting, and it might still be some time before BioWare is ready to confirm any new games in its pipeline.

So a studio that spent years on anthem then this dragon age thing is now also working on another ip along with mass effect,

You think they would be worried that there brand has been on 3 major screw ups

Dragon age 3 launched broken with the frostbite engine yes its a good game but you can see in the late game how rough it was

anthem......

Mass effect 4 well that dev team was fired so yeah.....

They should make sure this new dragon age is a goat instead of putting more work on the table

bababooiy15d ago

Bioware today is like 150 poeple i dont see how they are seemingly working on all these projects at the same time.

Michiel198915d ago

Inquisition wasn't broken, it just had some flaws and on the contrary it also had some strengths. If you call inquisition a major screw up then idk what to say.

That said with what happened to the study since then and now, I'm not really confident that their next game will be any good.

just_looken15d ago

If you played it fully to get plat like me back in its novemeber launch window you had that castle with empty area's endgame missions not there or working and a mp that was made around loot box grind like the mass effect mp.

Its hard to explain to those that played it years later after they tossed out the dlc/patch's

Michiel198915d ago

entitled much? I played it at launch too. Why you even platted it if it was a "major screw up"?
It was good enough for you to sink 100 hours in but also a complete fuckup at the same time, make up your mind.
So either you like shitty games or you're just talking out of your ass.

RaidenBlack15d ago

Well just wanna say, Archetype Entertainment is the new BioWare, composed of mainly ex-BioWare vets.
And they're developing Exodus (starring Matthew McConaughey), a new sci-fi RPG (spiritual successor to Mass Effect, dare I say?)

CantThinkOfAUsername16d ago

I hope it's a single player game with Anthem's gameplay mechanics.

Becuzisaid16d ago

They're owned by EA. What makes you think that they wouldn't publish for PS5? Shoot, if your fridge could connect to your bank account EA would try to release it for that if they could!

Double_O_Revan16d ago

How about they focus on those games and not over extend themselves? We don't need another Anthem.

Becuzisaid16d ago

Bioware died after Inquisition (some would even argue after ME3). They are no longer the same company.

New Mass Effect Game Teased for N7 Day, and It Shows a Mysterious Individual

Today is known as Mass Effect N7 Day, and BioWare has released what looks to be teasers for the new Mass Effect game.

Snookies12162d ago (Edited 162d ago )

We really need another solid Mass Effect entry. It's a real shame that such a legendary franchise was left off with such a blemish to its overall astounding track record. Andromeda was just not it, don't know what they were thinking there.

-Foxtrot162d ago

Surprised it got a subtitle

I thought after Andromeda they’d have kept to the numbers so people wouldn’t think “oh another spin off”

Unless Shepard returns

Obscure_Observer161d ago

"Unless Shepard returns"

After ME3, Shepard should f* off

Stanjara161d ago

Put a chick in it and make her gay.

Ethereal161d ago

Yes! One of my all time favorite trilogies. Hopefully they do ME justice. Andromeda was passable and had bones of a good game but just lacked the depth and intrigue that the originals had.
