Gran Turismo 5 Has Already Succeeded

"That said, GT5 is already a success, financially at least. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which came out in April of 2008, has sold approximately 3.86 million copies worldwide. Assuming a $15 profit (on average), that’s $57 million. The actual profit may be less or more depending on Sony’s cut, but the rumored $60 million budget for Gran Turismo 5 has been almost completely paid for by Gran Turismo 5 Prologue alone. When GT5 launches in November it’s going to sell millions, that’s a guarantee. How many millions will likely depend on how fans receive the game, but considering we’ve been waiting for nearly six years…" -

will sell ten million eventually.

SynGamer2800d ago

Eventually, yes. Never underestimate the power of gear-heads. I just find it amazing that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue has essentially paid for the development costs of it AND Gran Turismo 5.

fishd2800d ago

GT 5:P has sold 4.84 million copies not 3.86

rockleex2800d ago

Is why Sony lets them take 5 years to release the proper GT5 entry.

darthv722800d ago

it needs to sell more than 15mil to be the best selling GT game. GT3 is the leader so far and we know sales does not equal quality but that one right there is my favorite.

All of them have gotten better with each release but didnt sell as well as number 3. Maybe GT3 sold so well because it was the first GT game on a next gen system (PS2) back then. Not sure why GT4 didnt sell as well because it was a better game but still #3 is my fav.

I am just tired of waiting. There should be no doubt the game will sell well. November can't come soon enough.

Legosz2800d ago

I think it will sell a little more then the prologue. Think about it, only fans bought the prologue, therefore fans will buy GT5 which is the same amount of sales, give or take the new people (me) to buy. So my guess it 6-8million

Dee_912800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

thought that said weeks lol

vsr2800d ago

only uneducated people troll it. GT is one of the RARE games that has a WORLDWIDE selling power. not like any other limited area racing games.

sikbeta2799d ago

GT5 will be huge and Fans of the Franchise can't wait to play this Masterpiece...

GT5 3D FTW!!!

Basically, PD made back their investment with GT5 Prologue. GT5 itself is going to be all profit for them. We all know this.

SynGamer2800d ago

I wouldn't say ALL profit, considering we expect Sony to put forth a valiant marketing campaign. But their deficit is going to be close to nill/0. Props to Sony and PD.

Imperator2800d ago

Well, you know what I mean. They already made back the money they spent on making the game so GT5's sales won't have to make up for it.

Blaine2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

Also because they're probably going to make a GT5 PS3 bundle. Whether they do or not, though, GT5 is going to be a system-seller. That's why Sony lets PD do whatever they want!

Also, I haven't pre-ordered my copy yet, so whatever sales numbers you have, add +1 for me!

(Edit: this was supposed to be a reply to SynGamer, so it would be under rockleex's comment, where it would make sense! Meant as a reply to rockleex.)

HeroXIV2800d ago

Absolutely. I predict easily over 1M launch, 3M by end of year, 6M a year from now, then 10M lifetime.

ranmafandude2800d ago

gt5: prolouge sold so much it paid for the development costs for the acutal gt5 lol. i can't imagine how much that's gonna sell.

WIIIS12800d ago

Wait a minute, people seem very confused here... are sales figures important or not after all???

At least 10, i think it will sell GT3 numbers, every fan of that game will have this, the amount of effort and time spent on this game is crazy, thinking about it, we are actually playing gt6, they have done so much to this game that its like 2 or 3 whole games in one.

MexicanAppleThief2800d ago

GT5: Prologue sold 4.8 million.

Why is this person using VGchartz numbers?

SynGamer2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

Thanks, will update the numbers.

EDIT: Updated the article and added a link to the one you provided. Thanks again. I also pointed out that the Forza 2 and 3 numbers were from vgchartz since I have been unable to find a reliable source other than that for those two games. *damn you wikipedia and not having every answer in the world!*

labaronx2800d ago

it was also part of the cost with making GT:5

TheGameFoxJTV2799d ago

I wouldn't trust Wikipedia anyways.

Imperator2800d ago

+ who knows how much it's sold in the PS store.

Mmmkay2800d ago

you don't think sony and pd know?

Hotel_Moscow2800d ago

i woulnt say vg charts numbers are wrong but they can only update them so much

and vg chartz has them at 3.8 million after 20 weeks

raztad2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

VGCHARTZ data is not reliable, good thing PD has the real stuff.

BTW SyGamer GT:PSP sales also adds to the total: 1816K copies, at $40 is really good for a very low budget game.

Ok I see your point. But probably GT:PSP funding came from the same money, and the game itself works like an add on to GT5. I mean it lacks a career mode and their cars unlocked in GT:PSP can be used in GT5.

GT is a monster franchise. Prologue sales were enough to recoup the whole investment. Sony will make a killing when Gt5 releases.

SynGamer2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

I was going to include that, but I felt it would skew the numbers a bit since it's for the PSP and not the PS3. I did think about it, but it would have favored GT5 a bit too much I felt (article integrity wise) :)

*I need more bubbles. 4 is definitely not enough.

Tards like Kratos Ball Z make me laugh.
Remember kids, Its only okay to sell a DEMO when Sony does it. I think that's why so many of you wish you were Japanese, they get away with So much bullshit.

MexicanAppleThief2800d ago

No-one holds you at gun point and forces you to buy the game. Anyway it's their money, who are you to judge?

IRetrouk2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

HA HA HA HA HA HA, GT5 demo sold more than the other racer didnt it? and they were both bundled with there respective consoles, That demo had plendy of content for twenty pounds, it had more content than most racing games that are out even now, so is sony the only one that can selL demos? no, are they the only ones that make a demo WORTH paying for? yes, ODST OR ODLC?

SOAD2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

Prologue has more content than all demos and some full games. Besides, they sold it for 40 bucks, not full price. Stop dicking around. Nobody said anything stupid on this thread until you came along.

JustTheFactsMr2800d ago

Not to mention a "demo" that has 16-players on-line which is more than "full" arcade racers going for $60 can achieve.

PD is king. No doubt about it.

They didn't try and pull a fast one by calling it GT5 and then release GT6 this Nov. People knew exactly what they were getting and apparently flocked to it.

wazzim2800d ago

@SOAD I remember it being sold for more than €40 here at launch, it's still 30 in the stores here lol pretty expensive...but that's Europe, got strong demand for racing games.

djfullshred2800d ago

It was more than a demo, but not as much as a full game. I think it was a bit overpriced, but I played the hell out if it, so feel like I got my money's worth.

bjornbear2800d ago know you are just digging your grave and making forza 3 look like even more of a flop than it was.
