Villain, an independent producer and publisher of portable game titles, announced today that Archetype, its intense new online multiplayer First-Person Shooter (FPS) game just released for iPhone and iPod Touch, is currently the third-highest grossing application in the Apple App Store. In week one, Archetype has racked up over 320,000 thousand iPwnage sessions with the number steadily climbing thanks to the active fans and growing community.
Pocket Gamer:
Top FPS multiplayer team game Archetype has been updated today with a few new features inspired by modern democracy (and most PC multiplayer shooters), and a ton of bug fixes and tweaks.
The democratic addition to the game is the inclusion of a new voting system to decide the map, doing away with the old, bureaucratic UN-style veto system.
IGN writes: "First N.O.V.A., now Archetype. When two of the best shooters for the iPhone unsuccessfully make the transition to iPad, you have the question whether or not the tablet is a suitable destination for the genre. Of course, it doesn't help that Villain made little effort in the porting process. This is a straight across port with only a few new features -- but no new functionality to take advantage of the different platform. I cannot believe I'm using this word to describe Archetype on iPad, which is such an amazing iPhone game, but here it is: lazy".
Pocket Gamer:
With so many games announced in June, there's not much being discussed among iPhone developers. Bets have already been placed for the rest of the year, meaning that all the games to come out between now and December have already been decided.
That doesn't mean developers aren't preparing new games or that there aren't any surprise announcements scheduled over the course of the next few months. Epic Games is hard at work on a game, for instance, that could likely see a release before 2010 is out.
Most of the biggies are already known or intensely debated as rumours, though. Are there any games you'd like to see announced?
