Kojima Says Japanese are Lacking Motivation

Original Gamer: Hideo Kojima is not one of those developers that that blinds himself with nationalism thinking that only his country that can do gaming properly. Instead he, like others in the industry, has realized that the Japanese is trailing the West. Yes the JRPG and anime fanboys are probably disgusted by that comment, but it's becoming fairly obvious that the Japanese gaming market is getting stale.

what country did nintendo and sony consoles come from - japan

what country makes mostly pc games and made the xbox brand - america

for me japan still owns.

NYC_Gamer2718d ago

but you have to admit western devs have stepped it up real big

Unbiased12718d ago

ranman

Dont be ignorant! He is talking about software. And yes even in that field there are some Japanese developers of high class like Nintendo, Sony Japan, Konami, Capcom and few more but overall compared to west they have fallen behind. Thats a fact not an opinion.

SOAD2718d ago

no, that's still an opinion.

CrippleH2718d ago

Yeah, last generation I had mostly Japanese games. Now I have mostly Western games this generation.

guzman2718d ago

For once I agree with Soad. Jesus, the world must be ending.

evrfighter2718d ago

now even Kojima is saying it. How will the fanboys spin this one.

theKiller2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

and the ball is now in the western market.

of course there is a few exception but i think square enix had an impact on the japanese developers by their actions and leaving sony. japanese r very nationalist. and SE was the biggest Japanese company that supported the PS1 and PS2. now that support shifted to 360 but the other japanese Devs couldnt follow suit as SE.

if ps3 had wii like sales you would have seen better support. however there is still good japanese games but they are few and far from each other.

Metal Gear Solid 4
Yakuza's
Valkorie profile
annnnndddd.... i cant think of more on ps3 exclusives. thats a shame

and way they dropped the balls so it is natural someone else will take it.

i think sony should buy more japanese Devs. since they lack motivation, sony will give them if they are internal studios.

rockleex2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

They simply went for the Wii, DS, and PSP. There are VERY creative and innovative games for those systems.

Over here in the west, we focus a lot more on the HD consoles.

Therefore we feel as if they've dropped the ball, when really, they just went to play on a different court.

Part of the reason why they don't develop for the HD consoles is because they lack the motivation to push the graphical boundaries WHILE making great games. They're scared of not making their money back.

nickjkl2717d ago

japan just needs to what they want and stop worrying about other people make the game of youre dreams and everything will fall into place

Do you even have a PS3? It's Valkyria Chronicles. VP (which you spelt wrong) is on PS1, PS2 and PSP (port).

And what? I have quite a number of (good) Japanese games on my PS3:
Disgaea 3, BlazBlueCT, Street Fighter IV, FFXIII, Eternal Sonata, Resident Evil 5, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Bayonetta, DMC4, Naruto: UNS (not a fan of the anime but this game is very fun) plus obviously MGS4, Yakuza 3 and Valkyria Chronicles.

Japanese PS3 games I'm looking forward to: Disgaea 4, Persona, FFvXIII, BlazBlueCS, Yakuza 4, N:UNS2, Trinity Universe, 'Kojima's Next Project', Ar Tonelico III, Ni No Kuni, Atelier Rorona and Vanquish.

I'm not sure why you think this article has anything to do with what games are exclusive to PS3 but yeah, you're right that not the majority aren't at the moment. But now the majority of those coming out are only on PS3.

And don't forget a lot of Japanese developers are sticking with the PSP...

Except this article has nothing to do with Hardware it has to do with Software(games).

I don't think anyone can deny that Japan has kinda stalled there are a few Developers who still make great games but overall the west has taken the lead.

badz1492718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

why try too hard to make high quality, high spec games for high end PC or HD game consoles like PS3 or 360 when the most popular console and handheld are the least powerful one? - most of the small studios are sticking with last gen tech at the moment!

Lionalliance2718d ago

You totally missed the point....

Marceles2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

yeah I remember when everyone tried to keep up with the Japanese when it came to making high quality software.

Now it seems like they're behind and trying to create a westernized game, but it ends up just looking like a Japanese game trying to be westernized...and that mix hasn't really been all that great so far.

I'm actually offended when I see it lol...like I remember when Final Fantasy Mystic Quest came out for SNES and it was a totally watered down FF. It's like "here westerners...play this FF built specially for you western infants while we keep the REAL FFs".

I don't think they should change anything they've done in the past, they just need to actually look like they worked hard on a game. Like...when a Japanese game came out, it would make devs shut down development and totally give up on a game because their development was so perfect and original and groundbreaking that seemed like no one could match. Nowadays...making these little handheld RPGs aren't doing it for me (yes I'm looking at your Square). Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles...now that's another story, those games are incredible.

R2D22717d ago (Edited 2717d ago )

I remember when some site twisted Cliffy B's word around to say the same thing that Kojima said and he got flamed on N4G.

Kojima says it and he gets nothing but agrees. Dont give that BS that he is Japanese so he has the right to say it.

The western gaming industry has been growing immensely this generation and now western gamers are playing more and more western based games than in prior generations. Because of this continuous trend, western gamers have now more variety in distinctive games than the once (I would even say in what was a monopoly in overall appeal) usually dominant Japanese market. So in a sense now westerners have somewhat of an image on how games show not only look like, but play like as well.

I guess Japan is just soul searching on not only what westerners want, but what Japanese based gamers would appreciate as well. It could either be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view on the subject.

As for me, I still appreciate Japanese games and I am anticipating some old awesome IPs and some new ones as well, but I won't disagree with Kojima on his retrospect. He is right in the sense that there really hasn't been that much originality nor creativity when it comes to the Japanese industry.

You can only cling on on past franchise successes for so long.

mantisimo2718d ago

I think previously the Japanese had there own identity with their games with just a western flavour but then there seemed to be a point when they started asking "how do we make this more saleable in the west" as any multinational business would and should do.

But to me this has watered down what the "Japanese" game was and should be.

Thank god we still have the studios that don't think so much like this eg the Team Ico's, etc, there games don't sell what they should really, yet the experience is beautiful and still has the core Japanese flavour.

Okami was one of those games everyone should own but didn't sell too well.

Until people are prepared to give these titles a chance and they sell better in the west we will lose a lot of the innovation and magic that came from earlier titles.

The trouble is, to Japan the west is all FPS and that's really not what Japan is about.

evrfighter2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

problem with that is Nintendo never seemed to have any trouble with the western market software wise. (gamecube itself is another story)

Mario, Zelda, Metroid has been popular with the west from day 1.

Btw the west isn't just the US. The west is defined as everywhere that's not asia or Japan.

stephmhishot2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

"Hideo Kojima is not one of those developers that that blinds himself with nationalism thinking that only his country that can do gaming properly"

Clearly Kojima is not an American.

EDIT: Lol how can anyone disagree, there was a period here where every other story was an American developer saying how the Japanese don't know how to make games anymore.

George Sears2718d ago

The west =/= only the US you know. Most of the other articles could have easily been from any of the other English speaking countries.

And even if it was a western article I would agree as well. Just like this one. It's just that this one just seems more justifiable since it's from one of the top dogs of the Japanese/Gaming industry.

Serjikal_Strike2718d ago

ECM0NEY2718d ago

did a SDF member just complain about KOJIMA??!!!!

Lavalamp2718d ago

I feel that Tetsuya Nomura is the embodiment of Kojima's ideal Japanese developer. He has a dream and he is absolutely motivated to make it a reality.

Take Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The project was moved from the PS2 to the PS3 because he believed that the hardware was capable of supporting his "visual expression."

The game itself is definitely influenced by Japanese culture. It takes place in a Tokyo metropolis and the characters resemble the Japanese mafia.

With his perfectionist mentality at the ready, Nomura will work at every little detail of the game over and over until it's just right (that's what he did with the world map system).

The world could do with more Nomuras. *cough* and less Wadas *cough*

George Sears2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

Yes Tetsuya Nomura, Hideo Kojima, Fumito Ueda, the once Clover Studios, Hironobu Sakaguchi and pretty much the whole Atlus crew are Japans top dogs IMO.

*EDIT: Forgot Level 5
