Let's kill the "Video Games = Art" debates

"Let’s put all the “video games are art” debates to rest, everybody.

Roger Ebert finally threw up the white flag on the whole video games as art debate and basically admitted what we knew all along: he really doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about."

I still think Okami looks gorgeous.

JsonHenry2938d ago

Since "art" is completely arbitrary and subject to one's own opinion there is no real debate. You either think of it as a form of art or you don't.

Lombax2938d ago

It should be fairly clear that video games are art. All of them.

the first metal gear solid is art to me it was the first game that made me feel strong emotions towards the characters and storyline and had a great soundtrack and is also the best game i have ever played also shadow of the collosus is worth mentioning

Video games are art as defined my various definitions of the very word "art.

The argument only shows a reluctance to accept progress and change. The same way hip-hop or rock was not considered music.

FlyWestbrook2938d ago

Very well said, the definition of art is all over the place.

Downtown boogey2938d ago (Edited 2938d ago )

Art in my honest opinion, can simple be defined as
"A medium of conveying human emotions in a deliberate fashion."
Thus some games are art, some are not.

Darkfiber2938d ago

Hip Hop isn't music though.

Ahmay2938d ago (Edited 2938d ago )

music can have the same meaning but differ interpretations... take a rock song.. then listen to it in acoustic for example...

Video games are art, but only because I'm being subjective and think that.

Art is different to everyone.

Lord Gunchrote2938d ago

perfect statement. Who is the judge who says what art is? whomever is lookin at the shit! lol

giantchicken2938d ago

I'm happy Roger Ebert took back what he said, but man, he still didn't completely admonish himself of his stupidity for saying it.

n to the b2938d ago

exactly. glad he's admitting there are enough people who disagree for him to have to back off a bit. but that's all we get, not a true admission of the point.

well I say F you, too, Ebert. and by the way I stopped taking your word for it a long time ago, as far as films go.

waterboy2938d ago
