Maybe Sonic isn't for us, and maybe there's nothing wrong with that. This article is about one man's realization that it may be time to stop demanding what Sonic should or shouldn't be.
Wait a minute. I thought E3 was an age 17+ deal? How did a little girl get in?
She must have been someone's kid or something, I guess. I did see a couple of kids there.
Yeah, it was rather confusing me there for a second. Thanks for the clarification.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is the deciding factor for me if I'll ever buy another Sonic game again.
I bought Sonic and the Secret Rings and the Sonic on PS3...I don't know why. Other than that it's been a while, since Adventures 2 on Gamecube since I've played a sonic game. Oh crap I played the DS Sonics to include the Bioware RPG...I am a stupid sucker... Ok, this is my stand OneSneakyMofo. This will be my deciding factor as well.
I dunno. The new Sonic game in 2D is looking pretty cool to me.
Time to let Soniku go. SEGA just keep coming up with trash games of Sonic, they can't get him right. Sonic 2006 was meant to be a revamp of Sonic and his hail of coming back, but the gameplay was an instant failure! Sonic Unleashed looked promising until they brought in the stupid trash Werehog. Why can't they just bring Sonic Adventure 3? anyway, I don't care for Sonic now. Sonic vs Mario, and it shows that Mario won. Sonic is now for kids.
inspite of my Username being what it is, I have to agree with you. I have been faced with so many let downs by Sega. I would like the record show that I'm a veteran Sonic fan and not a fan about the new crap Sega composes.
yeah and he can take mario and halo with him until they bring something new to their franchises.
I like Sonic, but his friends have to go. They just make the series so campy.
could have been written 15 years ago, and still would've held true.
I was never that into Sonic, so letting go is no problem for me. :)
Well its better to have been than never have. Sonic was good around the Genesis times, but its time for a rest.
If Sonic 4 is good enough he can stay if not retirement is a great option for him
If the kids enjoy it, then it's a win. I seriously can't imagine Sega targeting this to any other audience, especially the hardcore gamer.
Article was very well said. I used to be a pretty big Nintendo fan up until the Gamecube. Honestly, they can refine and perfect their beloved franchises like Mario, Kirby, Donkey Kong ect.... The fact is, they are the same childish mascots and I have just grown up and moved on. I understand that there's supposedly "hardcore" platforming elements to Mario, but is it really more than just a new coat of paint on a 25 year old franchise? Nintendo & Sonic are both doing a good job of staying with the kids and there's nothing wrong with that. But as an adult gamer, PlayStation & Xbox is where I'll remain.
Yes, mario needs to go too.
The general consensus is that Sonic fell off (Sega as well). Just because this ONE little girl was into Sonic Colors doesnt mean we should just forgive Sonic for sucking lately. Mario is a childrens franchise too and Nintendo managed to drop potentially the best mario ever with Super Mario Galaxy 2.They need to do something, i couldnt tell you what it is. But SOMETHING needs to happen. (Sonic Adventure 3 plz)
SEGA ALIVE = SONIC ALIVE
its not time
Yes please. They spend so much effort trying to rekindle people's love for a 20 year old character that nobody cares about when they could use that energy to create something new and better. Sigh.
EVERY single nintendo console always has a new mario game and i dont see people complaining about that..sonic is sega's baby just as mario is nintendo and mario games are prob better than sonic but you cant just say let sonic die if anything NINTENDO needs to let their characters die, for christ sakes every e3, every new console its the same sh*t new zelda, new mario, new metroid. if there is a company that need to let characters die its NINTENDO at least sony and m$ have the balls to make new and exciting ips then the existing ones they have.
Maybe Nintendo characters don't die because they are constantly innovating and starring in incredible games. Just sayin...
Sonic is SEGA's mascott. They have no choice but to work him past his retirement. Imagine if Nintendo stopped making mario games, or if Microsoft stopped making Halo games. Sonic is all SEGA has to remember it's glory days. Tip to SEGA, make a next gen Shenmue already!
or panzer dragoon. or alex kidd. something besides grinding this dead horse to dust.
Screw the new 3D games, I just want Sonic Adventure and Sonic 4 on XBLA. Hopefully Sonic Adventure 2 comes as well.
Oh Mice and men style?
I just think they should let these characters go because they milk them to death. These characters were my part of my childhood and everyday I watch these companies turn them into hollow shells of their former selves. They should let Sonic rest in peace and make some new characters. It's like Batman Brave and the Bold. One of my most admired of the DC heroes reduced to a clown who trips over his own feet.
And Final Fantasy.
Mario goes without saying. He and his growing number of annoying squeaky voiced characters are number one on the please let it die list Sonic and his ever growing clones (how many hedgehogs that can run fast are there again? 5? 10?) and his ever growing annoying and/or squeaky voiced characters are next on the list.
Sonics levels in Unleashed were very good. The Sonic Rush games on Nintendo DS are fantastic. Theres life left in the old hog yet...!!!!!!!!!
well lets give the latest sonic 4 a try, and if that doesn't impress. then you might be right.
All I say is lets see how Sonic 4 holds up, Sonic The Hedgehog for PS3 and 360 was good but it had some draw backs. PS3: Fast loading time but not so good controls. 360: Very good controls but really bad loading time. That was the last Sonic game I bought and never plan on getting any of the Wii ones. S.Rings was already but wasn't all that great and Unleash was ok but not the best. I more like to see a Sonic game build just like Sonic Adventure was.
you sonic haters can do yourselves...and the rest of us in turn, a big favor and stop playing the games!
=( i love sonic but he has been beaten to death and not properly taken care of like a stray dog that found the wrong home =(
If sonic goes, mario goes, the only thing that midget knows how to do is eating mushrooms and plumbing (yeah i know he plays tennis, soccer, baseball and all that), the last memory i have from sonic is from SSBB, because he kicked ass and his actitude was cool.
i remember sonic, good times.
I don't think Sonic needs to retire he just needs a little vacation and has to be rethought out for gamestyle. Nintendo constantly rethinks Mario and that franchise will never die. But most new Sonic games are the samething day in day out like the Dragon Ball Z Boudakai games. Sega should give the little guy a break I still enjoy Sonic games but they should also focus on some other titles instead of just focusing on the Hedgehog.
Like Bayonetta for example
I'm not willing to let go just yet. Sonic Colors and Sonic 4 wave hello. ^_^
....I just set all the robots to auto. Just hoping one of them will kill sonic, or better yet me.
Big difference with Mario. I disagree about mario only having a new coat of paint. Mario has made a flawless move from 2d to 3d like no other. Sonic has NOT. Mario64 had my jaw drop and did things no other game has ever. Mario Galaxy2 has almost perfect gameplay, perfect camera, fantastic music, innovative level design crazy fun levels in 2d and 3d, with huge bosses. A masterpiece in every way a game could be. Sonic has been going only down hill for years. Sega has no clue what to do with him. Whats next Sonic the vampire hog? Gameplay has suffered badly in Sonic. The camera is a joke and there graphic engine is last gen quality and still has bad frame rates on ps3.
For the record, Sonic made the transition just fine on the Dreamcast. It was during the post-Dreamcast years where things have gotten shaky for Sonic. Luckily, Sega seems to have finally found the right balance in Sonic Colors for 3D. Who would've thought that a Power-up, of all things, could be the solution to spicing up Sonic's gameplay without the "vampire". You say that Sega has no clue, if recent Sonic games are any indication, they are only getting smarter with their choices. Sonic 2006 is widely known for its technical faults. The following game, Sonic Unleashed, delivered an experience free of technical glitches. Sonic Unleashed's complaints stemmed from the "Werehog" gameplay and the existence of hubworlds. Sonic Colors rids itself of all transformations, and instead uses power-ups for Sonic's abilities with only daytime stages. Radical changes, like the ones mentioned above, cannot come from a company that has no clue. Sega is learning by each game they make.
I do agree the first sonic on the dreamcast was a great classic. You can't say Sega is getting better when it takes 50 games to somewhat get it right. Sonic CD was the last real game made from the AM2 Sonic team. All the great people that made Sonic are long gone. sad
Sonic Adventure is and will forever be the sonic game with the best storyline and gameplay. Sonic Adventure 2 was more multiplayer based. after sonic adventure 2 the sonic games have been w/e. thank God or w/e the hell is working life up there a monkey for all we know that sonic adventure 1 is coming back through the psn and xbox Sega LISTEN!!1!!1one!1!11! MAKE SONIC ADVENTURE 3 with new characters not just mirrored imaged character of sonic Shadow was good enough he needs a rival, screw silver i don't want to see a gold or indigo or violet hedgehog unless shes a chick and she and Amy go at it in a bitch fight. theres a ton of other animals you can fricken model them after and also every sonic character theres ever been created in one game with a kick ass storyline like Sonic adventure where you can play them all with each of their perspective role in the storyline. That will surely bring sonic back P.s Shenmue 3 ftw
This article's totally right. Time to say goodbye to Sonic.
