Nine games shown at E3 that are true art

On Nederob.nl there's a list of nine games that are interesting from an artistic and design point of view. It's worthy to check the list when you like graphically different games like Okami, Little King's Story and more. The list of nine E3 2010 games includes games like Limbo, Scott Pilgrim and the new Kirby game for Nintendo Wii.

Should be a top 10 and feature thatgamecompany's Journey, as well. How is that game not on this list? thatgamecompany define videogames as art.

killyourfm2707d ago

Echoed. Journey is incredible and it's exclusion is either a result of ignorance or..???

despair2707d ago

yup. No journey? that game looked amazing.

Journey wasn't actually AT E3 though, was it? No trailer, no gameplay, just screens. Just saying.

I thought it was there? Other sites nominated it for best at E3. I think 1up even gave it the win in a couple categories.

It was there but only behind closed doors.

They do not define the art, they merely add to it. no one peice can define art.

Roger Ebert says they are not.

Erbert gave Clockwork Orange a 2 stars out of 4 and One Flew Over a Cuckoo's Nest a 3 stars out of 4.

Then he gave Avatar a 4 stars out of 4.

I think he can go fuck himself as far as art is concerned

Roger Ebert's prejudice of video games stems from a fundamental misconception of what video games are. He criticized "flower" becuase he couldn't understand what the "win" conditions might be and what they would mean. He seems to believe that video games are just digital versions of Connect Four, and cannot be art because of that. He doesn't know that video games are evolving into a story-telling medium.

Anyone else realized each console is getting an exclusive game involving shadows?
PS3 - Echochrome 2
360 - Limbo
Wii - Lost In Shadow

Timesplitter142706d ago (Edited 2706d ago )

Limbo is now coming to PC and PS3 too. There's an article somewhere on N4G where the devs made the announcement

But I don't think it really involves shadows. Just dark figures

Davoh2706d ago

I just searched, the claims of it coming to PC and PS3 were an error by ESRB, the devs confirmed it as still XBLA only.

Although it is just dark figures it's still close enough to shadows =)

makes me glad I've kept my Wii. It doesn't see much action, but with this and Epic Mickey on the way, well...good times.

I definitely believe that video games can be art, but just having a unique style doesn't make it. These games look very interesting, but I don't know if they would be art.

Edit: I consider "flower" to be art because of the themes it addresses (eg. the relationship between man and nature). I consider "Heavy Rain" to be art because of how well it draws you in, makes you care about the characters, and, most importantly, gives you REAL choices to make (no other game comes close to what the chapter titled "The Shark" does with moral choices).

If the visual style serves an overall purpose that fits with what the game is trying to do, that's great, and that is an element of art, but just the style doesn't do it by itself.

Timesplitter142706d ago

I agree with you but looking at the Limbo trailer I can definitely call this art.

Qui-Gon Jim2706d ago

I would need more information before making a judgment of course, but it looks to me like a pretty straight forward platformer with a neat visual style and perhaps some neat gameplay mechanics related to the style.

I like what I see, though, and would like to try it out.

Halochampian2706d ago

i would also consider Braid a true form of art as well.
