Microsoft plans to use Kinect to enhance controller-based Xbox 360 games

Examiner.com
"One of the complaints about Kinect for the Xbox 360 is that Microsoft has primarily showcased casual-based games. These games have little appeal to many core Xbox 360 owners used to the likes of Halo, Mass Effect, and Call of Duty. However, the camera peripheral could be used to add functionality to traditional controller-based games according to the Xbox Director of Product Management, Aaron Greenberg." (Kinect, Microsoft, Xbox 360)

Like how?
Scans your face for some in-game REALISM? Or maybe you can now shout at your TV to navigate menus.

Maybe I lack imagination, but I don't see a lot of meaningful applications for Kinect in controller-based games.
dangert12  +   598d ago
playing ghost recon

'xbox soilder 2 behind the skip' (no reaction)
'xbox soilder 2 behind the skip'...

you shout

'xbox soilder to behind the skip!!!!' enimies notice you and kill you

Lol. Come on dangert12. Don't tell someone to fix something until you can fix your spelling.
dangert12  +   598d ago
@ Bzone24 im not selling broken words to a paying customer or lying and saying my spelling is great i know its not,
microsoft are telling us lies about kinect straight of the mark i wont lie i have nothhing to gain but a bubble which get taken away as soon as i get 1
just because i cant spell that well does not mean i dont have the right to want a full working product upon purchase

disagree?
oh well i've been mispelling on n4g for over a year now and nothings going to change there and i still think microsoft should give every one who buys kinect a fully working product if you disagree with this because i can't spell who is the bigger fool me or you?

So you've tried out the controller based games that are going to use Kinect? How do you know they are lying? How do you know it won't work if you purchase?

Google toolbar has spellcheck.
ArmrdChaos  +   598d ago
Maybe instead of your poor example at screaming at the controller you do what they do out in the field...use hand gestures for signaling and direction.
HolyOrangeCows  +   598d ago
"according to the Xbox Director of Product Management, Aaron Greenberg"
I trust him about as far as I could throw him if he were tied to a truck.

Actions speak louder than words, Microsoft.
Do it. Until you actually do it, it means nothing to me that you say that you will.
Bzone24  +   598d ago
"Do it. Until you actually do it, it means nothing to me that you say that you will."

If they do it, you will trash them for doing it.

Does the trolling ever end with you?
SilentNegotiator  +   598d ago
@Bzone24
You sir/madame, confuse disappointment and sickness of not having promises fulfilled with trolling.

If Microsoft could stop talking out their backsides and deliver, then there would be no room to complain.

The rushed assumption that anyone who normally disagrees is bias is everything that's wrong with human mentality of today. For instance, politics get nowhere because politicians all wear tin foil hats and then hypocritically do what they accuse others of.

questions
The question becomes are some extra game features really worth paying $150?

Or is it possible a simple webcam could have done the job?
Biggest  +   598d ago
I can't stop laughing at this.

Hello. My name is Microsoft. I just revolutionized gaming with the Kinect. I want you to buy it. And for your loyalty, I will reward you with the ability to play the games you were playing. But here's the thing. You can play them with the Kinect looking at you. That's pretty much it. You know how you can voice chat with the microphone we gave you? Well now you can buy the Kinect and it will do the same thing! I bet you're wondering how much this REVOLUTION in gaming will cost you. How much did you guess? $500? $1000? Even more? NO! You can get this incredible camera for $150!
StixRemix  +   598d ago
The article only talks about voice commands. Can't we do that with just a mic? I think Greenberg is reaching here.
Queasy  +   598d ago
You're right, which the article mentions. But it also mentions head tracking.

There's bound to be other options that creative developers can come up with too.
BakedGoods  +   598d ago
Head tracking might be alright.
StixRemix  +   598d ago
Yeah, I'm sure there is more that can be done, but I think he's up to his elbows in spin (for the time being).
HolyOrangeCows  +   598d ago
You could easily do head tracking and voice command on a substantially cheaper camera and a microphone, and it wouldn't cost $100+
callahan09  +   598d ago
@HolyOrangeCows: That's true. PSEye is capable of head-tracking & facial recognition and has a microphone array built-in. Retail price is 40 dollars but it's pretty easy to get online for about 30 with free shipping. That kind of interaction doesn't require a camera with 3D tracking capabilities.
soljah  +   598d ago
so am i missing something. kinect scans your hands holding a xbot controller, whats the point?
SOAD  +   598d ago
xbox controller.
Moonboots  +   598d ago
This is the kind of stuff I'm excited about with Kinect. Even in inventory menus where you can use your hands to navigate.

As long as it's quick and accurate and not a frustrating experience.
BlackKnight  +   598d ago
With Deus Ex 3 coming up I wish they would have allowed the option that when ever interacting with computers in the game (if it's anything like Deus Ex 1, which from the leaked game play it is) you can put you controller on your lap or whatever, and while still sitting, use your hands to navigate the game's computer systems like minority report. Also maybe allowing picking locks the same way, just have kinect zoom like the xbox live cam can, just tracking on the arms and fingers.

Your idea for the inventory sounds great too. Just hold your hand up, open and flat, and when you want to grab/drag an item around you make a fist, they release your fist where ever you want to put it. Then you take your controller and resume playing. To me, that's more interesting than rafts and boxing games. Makes it immersive, like you are interacting with devices in the game world.

Kinect is a over hype failure .
nygamer28  +   598d ago
bro is hasnt even come out yet and your calling it a failure...your post is more of a failure
kissmeimgreek  +   598d ago
how about that rumor with ghost recon where you can use your hand to give orders while still keeping one on the controller. that would be awesome and really immersive.

or what about instead of pushing a button, you just punch if you want to melee like in COD. (except actually make your guy punch so its also more immersive.)
Lord Gunchrote  +   598d ago
Gotta have some buttons man. I really don't know how else this can be done...good luck though.
dcbronco  +   598d ago
I am so glad thewre are other people out there coming up with stuff.
There are a lot of things that could be done using both. Especially in games like GRAW. Like simply using the same hand signals for your team like you see in every war movie. The Forza demo used head tracking to check mirrors.

Greek has the right idea. There are things people more imaginative than some of those posting here could ever imagine.
jonboi24  +   598d ago
So whats the whole point of this controller-less campaign they have. They wasted E3 stressing how controller-less is the direction their going and they do a 180. Really MS, starting to doubt yourself already? Seriously I ain't going to play with Kinect and a controller if I can't set down. Imagine playing Halo like this but spending the whole time standing up. MS you still need to fix some of the kinks first because if Kinnect can't read a player sitting down than this whole "enhance controller based games" will fail.
Keltik82  +   598d ago
Ya know, I'm curious.
When it's night time how are people suppose to play Kinect? You can't really whisper can you? "/whisper, Xbox pause, xbox play" ya know? How are you suppose to play those other games at night? You can't really jump around without pissing off your room mates if their trying to sleep or if you live with your parents or live in an apartment.

I'm just honestly curious if someone could please tell me how all this is possible? it sounds like way more of an inconvenience then it's worth.
Moonboots  +   598d ago
I'm sure they won't disable the standard controllers for that type of stuff. Kinect will be there as an option.
Keltik82  +   598d ago
Lets say they do
What about if you want to play those Kinect based games? Then that voids the whole concept of the game, doesn't it?
Moonboots  +   595d ago
It does void the whole concept of Kinect but in situations like the one asked here it is necessary..

Never has MS said Kinect would be a total replacement for the controller.
tiamat5  +   598d ago
I find it so amazing how Microsoft can just outright lie and everyone just goes with the flow. They said that it was control free gaming. And now suddenly they are saying control free gaming needs a controller? Why didn't they mention that at the conference? So how does that make it different from the Move? It's actually more clumsy to hold the controller in you hand while making motions for the Kinect. So what does the Kinect offer? A few controller free games that barely work and a control system less steamlined then the Move or Wii-mote? I really don't understand people sometimes.
Moonboots  +   598d ago
So what does the Kinect offer?

For me, additional immersion.

I can only speak for myself. I've not seen anything from MS that delivers that in the way I imagined yet.

If and when they do I will bite.

After playing a game like GTA Chinatown Wars, it makes me wonder how sick a real GTA using motion controls to break into cars or spray paint walls could be, considering how sick it was to use the stylus to tattoo , graffiti, break into cars and hot wiring them. This and PSmove have alot of potential in that aspect. PSmove would be better suited for stuff like that though.

hopefully some good comes out of this
games4fun  +   598d ago
huge mistake in my eyes
I dont like any motion controls as far as i'm concerned, but there seems to be an issue with where they want this product to go.

They went from no controller to controller. There are numerous problems with this kind of thinking. You are no longer buying a peripheral that does it all in one attempt. It now is being used to enhance an experience rather than create it.

Why would anyone pay around 150 dollars for an expensive peripheral that still requires the controller. The marginal extra game features earned will be a hard sell in terms of proving the value of such a product. This is especially true when most of the gaming will now obviously be controlled by the physcial controller.

I can think of uses
-Hand gestures and verbal orders in games like Ghost Recon.
-Being able to speak to other players with no mic strapped to your head.
-Pull up a menu and say the name of the item you want to use.
-Transferring your facial features to your in game character model.

Still not sure if these things would be worth the price but maybe the developers will be able to think of better ways to make use of it. If they don't then I won't buy it. No big.
DelbertGrady  +   598d ago
Sounds sweet :)

Would be cool as f to press keypads and whatnot using Move while playing an FPS.

Now hate some more.

Getting a kick out of the PS3 fanboys...
Try as hard as the might to cut down Kinect, there is a reason it's #3 on Amazon and Move is 91 LOL. Their overpriced Wii copy does nothing new, costs too much, and consumers are already showing how little they care about it.
djfullshred  +   598d ago
McDonalds sells a lot of hamburgers too. Does that mean we should be really impressed by the food?

But seriously, I am not going to rip Kinect. But I question the reasoning behind wanting to be the first to own something that they talk more about what it might be able to do than what it will be able to do out of the box. If the device is integrated into games actually available in a way that's cool then that is the time to buy. Early buyers are going to be stuck playing with Skittles.
dizzleK  +   598d ago
show me. give me a concrete reason to want this NOW, not vague promises of will, might and may. as of right now it's utterly useless to me.

for the record move is currently useless to me as well. i see no compelling reason to buy that either.

The only things i can think of to mix games for core gaming would be

To throw grenades
To give hand commands when you are controlling a squad
Track head movement to look around in FPS
Melee attacks

Pretty much all i can think of.
