id Software’s Rage: Nothing ill can dwell in such a temple

Triple-A Gamer: I’ve become a heretic. id Software is deep into development on a game that I care nothing about. As I watched Tim Willits nervously repeat the same phrases we’ve heard about Rage since 2008, I wondered where it all went wrong. I regarded the now familiar wasteland environment with boredom. I almost dismissed the new screenshots, full of male nipples and patriotically-colored tattoos, until I spotted a rogue blurry texture and pondered the purpose of this new technology. If we’re still looking at pixel soup, what’s the point of virtual texturing? It’s still a beautiful game, but in 2010, I expect more. (iD Software, Industry, Rage)

"electrocuting mutants in the water like Bioshock, the World of Warcraft inspired engineering plans and quests, the Halo-derivative recharging health, the HUD that bloodies when a player takes damage exactly like Gears of War, the Grand Theft Auto style open world with vehicles. Rage is doing little to distinguish itself."

It seems the writer of this article is irrationally upset that iD took the best aspects of games and incorporated it into RAGE.

"Boohoo. I can drive vehicles in RAGE? How unoriginal. I wish I couldn't drive vehicles in RAGE because that would distinguish RAGE from Grand Theft Auto. Also, I can electrocute enemies in water? That's so unoriginal. iD should have made it so that I couldn't electrocute enemies in water because that way RAGE would distinguish itself from Bioshock. And what's what all these guns. Having guns is unoriginal. I wish iD made it so that there would be no weapons in RAGE. That would distinguish RAGE from all other first person shooters."

Cry me a river.

And then the writer lists 10 iD employees who either quit or were fired from iD. The first on the list? John Romero? Fired for being "passionate about games"? Yeah...no. Romero was fired because he was an arrogant leech on the studio who antagonized gamers. Daikatana ring a bell?

The rest of the article isn't so much about RAGE, but what the author perceives to be iD software's decline in the industry. Of course, the author has the gall to say that iD software's technology no longer takes precedent in the industry while at the same time commending Epic Game's Unreal Engine which... drumroll, please... contains a shitload of code from the Quake engine. Not to mention the largest franchise of this generation, Call of Duty, which also runs on an engine that's heavily modified from the Quake 3 engine.

Oh, the humanity of this guy.

The author then opines that The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was a better game than Doom 3. I can't even comment on that.

This guy seems to have a grudge against iD for reasons he doesn't wish to divulge. He says he saw many hitches in the RAGE gameplay, like framerate drops and fauna pop-ins. I didn't see these issues in any of the gameplay vids from E3, but if they are there then I may have subconsciously disregarded them because the game is incomplete and is set to be released a long time from now. Yet, the author would rather dwell on any crumb of negativity he can latch on to, the poor sap.

The author of this article and the submitter of this article on N4G are clearly upset and bitter because this game raising the bar in every way possible.

sigh...this game is setting the bar for "MULTIPLATFORM" games.
