Is Upgrading to a Xbox 360 Slim Worth it?

The much anticipated Xbox 360 Slim is now available in stores for $299.99, but a plethora of concerned gamers are wondering if upgrading is worth the purchase?

it is really just a matter of personal choice. Looking at the stores you will find the elite is selling for $299 with a $50 gift card (wal-mart as an example) and 2 games (forza/odst). 120gb hdd and no wifi. Then you look at the 360S and see it has 250gb hdd and wifi and nice shiny new exterior that is cool and quiet.

For a new buyer you get more for your $$ with the elite as it comes with games and you can add wifi and a 250gb hdd at your leisure. For an existing owner it is just a matter of do you want the latest and greatest.

PS3 slim came out and there were many people on this site proclaiming they were either trading in their fatty's or getting the slim in addition to their originals. Was it worth it then to get the slim ps3 even though features were removed? If you didnt have one then most definitly as the cost had been cut along with the release. If you were an existing owner then it too was just a matter of personal choice.

I really like the new 360 and will gladly get one yet i am an existing owner and that choice is mine to decide. At some point there wont be a choice because the older units will no longer be available just like the original ps3's arent available in retail (unless used).

The question is really subjective as everyone places value on things differently.

If you just bought the PS3 from the beginning then you would not have to upgrade your console all the time from arcades to elites to slims etc.. Because of it's replaceable harddisk, build in WiFi, quite noise, Blu-ray, low failure rate and so on.. I'm sorry for bringing it up and it might be even hurtful for someone to hear the truth.. But all what this new slim offers the first PS3 did offer.. I don't feel like flamebaiting I just tell how I feel with this.

I agree. The value of the new 360 S is subjective for current 360 owners. Personally, I'm not sure I'm willing to trade my Jasper 360. I know I have a solid working unit and don't want to risk buying the latest and greatest for superficial reasons.

Additionally, the heat "issue," the article mentions (regarding 360 S) is worrisome to me. My unit is already very quiet and produces little heat.

I think if you are buying a 360 now you should definitely get the 360S simply because +$50 for an extra 130GBs and WiFi is not a bad deal.

If I buy a 360 (which I might this year) I will get a slim it looks nicer too.

If you already have a 360 don't bother with the 360S. I didn't even understand why people traded in Phat PS3s for Slims to me it seemed stupid as they both do the same things and its not like a portable device like PSP 1000 and PSP Slim&Lite.

Reported as off topic. Even my ps3 crapped out. Not a system break, but the infamous "hard drive disk corrupt" happened to me. The ps3 isn't prone to failure rates. There is also the ylod.

Either way, I think upgrading to the slim is only a necessary if you need to have the latest.

120 GB, and I install every game I play on it, so the DVD never has to spin, basically avoiding RROD altogether. It is my first and only 360, and I never needed a replacement. Just gotta take care of your shyt. Also, no more faceplate fun with the Xbox 360 S, so that's a big letdown. The only thing my 360 lacks compared to the "S" series, is the integrated wireless N, but with the Xbox 360 S out, the prices on the Wireless N adapters are going to drop dramatically, so I'll just get one of those when that happens.

if you already have a nice set up with a previous 360 then there is no need to buy the new one....if Kinect is on your shopping list...well it has been said that it will come with its own external power supply so that it can connect to previous 360's...nobody loses out if you do or dont buy one...if you are a new buyer then its a great buy

my cable modem sits right next to my 360 and right next to my wireless router. How hard is it to have your modem close to your 360, if you have dsl you probably have a phone line at your tv anyways if you have satelite, if you have cable your cable modem can be run from right there. I thin the entire wifi argument is dumb. Its not that hard to have your modem close. Its a fanboy argument because the 360 didn't have it and the ps3 did.

Best reason to upgrade out of all the hardware revisions. You get more features with the 360 Slim. I don't remember these articles about the downgraded PS3 slim.

For me yes. I kept my Jasper elite and got rid of my RROD replacement Opus 360 (out of warranty), 2 120gb HDD, 3 spare controllers, 512mb mem card and wireless dongle. I paid the $14.95 difference.

Actually I think IT IS worth it for the following reasons.

1. Sell the current 360, let's say you have an arcade, try to get $100 out of it.
2. If you were planning on buying an HDD it comes with 250gb already.
3. If you were planning on buying the Wi-Fi N add-on which is like $150, it comes built-in anyway.
4. It looks more like a PS3
5. It probably IS more reliable, 45nm chipset and all.

The only concern is #5. If they didn't work out the reliability issues, there is less space for airflow and it could fail faster. One would hope that Microsoft fixed everything, but who knows? We'll have to wait and see.

My old 360 is from 2006 so it was 4 years old and just kind of showing it's age.

after all was said and done I payed 142 for the 360 Slim.

with every 360 they've gotten more and more reliable, plus with it's age I was worried about RROD. The quiet factor was also a major decision.

I already have a 250GB Elite. I don't use wireless and I install the games I am playing, no noise. I have over a year left on my extended warranty. So no I won't be buying one.

I'm on my 9th console, yes ninth. All been exchanged on my extended warranty. No doubt this one will fail and I'll end up with a slim as a replacement. Just hope the store doesn't have any old ones when it dies lol.

15 million more then xbox 1

5 million more then ps3

however 10-20% of those 40mill are purchased replacements or upgrades

this is based off of the high failurre rate and a smallish sampling of people whos consoles broke bought a new one and returned the faulty after it had been repaired by ms cause they couldnt wait

as for getting it, if you havent bought a 360 and want one go for it if you have a xbox and it works its your call the money used in upgrade yould get you another 2 games or almost a kinect system

It's sleek, sexy and quiet. No chance of a RROD or anything. Built in wireless, 250 gig HDD standard, headset. How can you not get it? Most people I know are taking advantage of the Gamestop or Play n Trade deals where you trade in your old one.
The problem is actually getting one, I had to win a Gamestop Lottery in order to get mine.
See this new Xbox 360 slim is an actual upgrade, you get an upgraded HDD, Wireless N and it's quieter and more energy efficient, while the PS3 Slims were actually a downgrade, less USB ports, no backwards Compatibility, no flash drives etc...
So it's definitely worth it. There is also a deal for the Spring Bundle Arcade 360's, you get an Arcade, 2 games for $149 and you get a $50 gift card as well. The Elites have a similar deal 120 gig HDD and 2 games for $249 and a $50 giftcard. How can you go wrong?

Point 2. wireless n, again congratulations the ps3 had built in wifi since day 1 just not n i believe. These new 360's only come with 1 year warranty. The old models get 3 years. Even if you already have a 360 and are thinking of buying the new model - you should stick with what you have or buy/trade for a new old model version with the price drop

From the look of slim X360, it looks like "possible" better cooling but it's not proven at all. I'm always amazed that gamers often assume because it's new design, it has to be more reliable.

Anyone who's rushing to buy a slim X360, the real prove of the reliability is after playing it through the hot summer months. Also, until you have been playing games for several hours in the hot summer afternoon, then you'll know if the fan can stay quiet and the system doesn't overheat.

By fall, we should have some idea how reliable the new design is.

Even the slim PS3 fan still runs noisy if it gets hot.

well in my case ive been wanting to make my xbox wireless (currently use the internet sharing feature through my laptop via cat5) and im running out of space.

this is how im looking at it: gamestop will give me 180ish for my console, hdd, and one controller. the slim 360 is 299, the wireless n adapter is 99, and the 250gb hdd is 129.....

so you do the math, in the end IF i do end up getting a bigger hdd and wifi for my xbox i will save alot of money by trading in and getting the slim.

well it *technically* doesnt rrod anymore... but instead it rlod, because they changed the general hardware failure error code to one light instead of the ring.

if you take care of it you should be fine with the current models (id wait just a bit to see how the slim does) just install all of your games to reduce heat and wear and tear from the disk drive and keep all the vents clear.

For me? Yes it was. This 360 is extremely quiet, it emits heat very well (which is a good thing), and it's sleeker, smaller, and weighs less. Not to mention it's been revised to work a LOT better.

The side vent is damn hot because the fan is extracting more heat. Still I would like to replace the fan with a fan that moves more air but is still quiet. Theres already a mod available with a side window and it includes a better fan for the 360S.
