President Iwata has announced that the 3DS will have free DLC, anywhere in the world, for free. No fee puts it up against competitors PSN and XBL, the latter costing $50 a year.
And by DLC they mean ranking and typical updates that are already free, but able to do it anytime and without the need for WiFi. For example, Professor Layton games have new puzzles introduced that you can download all the time, but now instead of forcing you to go in and get the data itself, once you start up the game it will do it automatically and without need of WiFi. This can lead to auto-distributed DLC as well as paid DLC.
