IGN: E3 2010: What Microsoft's Press Conference Was Lacking

Overall, IGN was impressed with Microsoft's E3 2010 press conference. There were Sparans, Gears, race cars, motion control games, Metal Gear moments, and a lot more. But that doesn't mean they didn't have tiny little pockets of sadness trapped inside them when they left the Wiltern Theater on Monday morning. Here's a quick look at a few of the missing pieces.

Games. Exclusive/New/Hardcore games.

Wait, first of all, IGN is this a joke?? You all unanimously were IMPRESSED with the conference? Have I been spending too much time in N4G or am I right in assuming it was a show that lacked any redeeming qualities? I mean, really?? None of you writers hated it as much as I did?

Anyways, Gears, Halo, and Fable aside (all of which received little to no attention overall unfortunately), it lacked games.

I don't justify thinking of what I saw in Kinect in the same ballpark of what I see in something like Halo, Gears, and Fable, all of which were neglected for Kinect air-time. We also saw one seeming exclusive from Crytek, but it lacked what I wanted most: games.

The new LIVE features are a joke to me (ESPN? I don't watch sports, though I'm sure many fans are happy with this one). The new 360 unveiling lacked the surprise factor, and I don't care to see multiplat games.

Oh, and it was boring as all hell.

andthensum2623d ago

But I know this holiday, it will be lacking customers as I already told all my friends that the PS3 Move is the way to go this holiday season. A couple of my friends are married and/or have kids and I usually give them advice on whats hot and whats not and NATAL/Kinect is absolutely Not worth it. Move is better from all angles and is definitely an easier transition for people and children who had a Wii as their sole console. So looking forward to Sony's and Nintendo's conference to wash the awful taste of Microsoft's conference from my mind.

And every forum on the internet on every major gaming site is sharing the same sentiment and its not just N4G. N4G members just seem to be more enlightened in comparison to the kids that run amok on the major gaming sites. Its about the games and not the company, which is why Sony fans have more to talk about.

RedDevils2623d ago

"Have I been spending too much time in N4G" look like it

soxfan20052623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

I don't think it lacked hardcore games - it's just that MS doesn't announce games years ahead of time like Sony does. Halo, Gears, Fable - those are MS's big three, and they were all present. Those are the games that have proven to move software AND hardware.

To the contrary, Sony last year at E3 announced Agent & Last Guardian as exclusives. A full year has passed, and still no gameplay exists of either game, let alone a release date.

flyingmunky2623d ago

You're thinking someone is spending too much time on this site in the middle of E3? Are you kidding?! This is THE time to be on n4g, real news is pouring in by the boatload.

Biggest2623d ago

What about all of the exclusive games that were already released this year for the PS3? What about all of the very soon to come exclusives? You're right. We haven't seen much or anything at all about Agent or The Last Guardian. But we've seen plenty about many more games. There is no "big three" for the PS3. There is a big everything. Don't try to defend the Microsoft conference. Either admit that you'll buy anything they tell you to buy because you love them, or be a normal person that can make rational decisions. As good as the 360 was when it was released they have lost their way. To them it's better to make a quick buck than have long time buyers. But they'll take your money just the same.

"To the contrary, Sony last year at E3 announced Agent & Last Guardian as exclusives. A full year has passed, and still no gameplay exists of either game, let alone a release date."

You're right. They also showed God of War III, Uncharted 2, ModNation Racers, Heavy Rain, MAG, Dissidia, Gran Turismo PSP, Peace Walker, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, A Crack in Time, new PSP hardware and a good amount of PSN titles..... all of which came out in the year since they announced them.

They announce games that have yet to come to build hype and excitement. The Last Guardian is one of the most anticipated titles of their conference. It's great that they let us look into the future, and they continue to build new IPs on top of it. What would be wrong with that?

On the other hand... Halo: Reach and Fable 3 were also announce last year, but have yet to be released. Your point being...

Redrum0592623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

Ok u make an ok point, but wanna know why your comments fail, because many go through long distances to be at the E3 show so last thing someone would want to do is travel tens, hundreds, baybe even thousands of miles to see old news. If u aren't a casual gamer and aren't interested in kinect, then there was nothing new at MS E3 besides the cool new xbox.
So if I were to go to E3 or even watch it, I want to see some new exclusives and projects so that I know wat expect for my gaming console, regardless of being a year ahead of time. srry but halo, gears, and fabal wasn't enough to fill my E3 thirst, now all I have left us to hope that nintendo or Sony can quench my thirst.

Biggest2623d ago

From soxfan via PM:
"Big Three
Uncharted, God of War, & Gran Turismo are Sony's big three. There may be other good games, but those three are the ones that move software AND hardware. Sony couldn't survive without those games, just as MS can't survive without Halo, Gears, & Fable.

Get off your high horse. You are implying that anyone who buys 360 games is doing so only because MS tells them to? That anyone who is impressed with MS's upcoming games is not rational? Insulting over 40 million people hardly makes you look enlightened in your choices. You come off as a bitter Sony lover who refuses to see that 360 games sell because they are high quality, just as Sony's are."

I disagree with your choice of "Big Three" as well as your assessment of the PS brand without them. First of all, Little Big Planet sold more consoles to people I know. I remember being the only one of my friends with a PS3 until LBP was released. Secondly. . . Uncharted was released on the PS3. God of War was released on the PS2. There was a PS1 before them both. Playstation did just fine before them. If there was no Uncharted there would have been many other choices. You know what has been released already. There is no big three.

I am not on a high horse. I am definitely not implying anything. I say what I mean. We are talking about Microsoft's conference. If you found the offerings from this conference to be sufficient for your gaming needs. . . Well. . . I don't know what to say. I am not insulting 40 million of anything. I am saying that you, and others, who feel that what they saw today was worth their money are either happy with casual has-been crap, or they only care to love their Microsoft with monetary affection. Trust me, most of the people that own a 360 or PS3 could give two shits about what goes on here at N4G.

There, there. /jk

But I agree completely. If some one told me one that too much conference time for one device could wipe out the awesome tone set by Gears 3, MGS Rising, Fable III and Halo Reach gameplay trailers (along with the Codename Kingdoms and XBox 360 S reveals), I'd think they were crazy. Sadly, that's exactly what happened.

ClownBelt2623d ago

The 2nd half of the presentation was full of "wtf did I just saw" and awkward moments.

002623d ago

such a disappointment.

tatotiburon2623d ago

you probably don't like sports but a lot of people do and this parnetship with ESPN is huge. Right Now The Fifa World Cup is playing in southafrica, this is THE BIGGEST SPORT EVENT IN THE WORLD, imagine is this espn feature was available months ago, "watch the fifa world cup in your xbox 360 in HD" with all the features, replay, camera angles, choose team, it could be a great boost sales...

RedDevils2623d ago

Sport FTW!! but I heard people complaint about espn commentator are very lame especially some american commentator on a Football(sucker) match, it feel like you have to mute it. Well lucky that I don't have to watch espn thank god :)

Aikuchi2623d ago

One thing I noticed about the ESPN bit was they mentioned you could watch every other sport but the one that is #1 in the USA, no NFL. For me that means the ESPN plug-in will always fall short.

McMee2623d ago

Damn I didnt notice that, guess I assumed espn meant everything, hopefully whatever liscensing they need will come through, I would say making that deal is pretty imortant too being the largest 360 install base is in the U.S.

McMee2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

Unfortunaltely I totally agree (barring espn I happen to love sports as well as video games) I guess I was holding my breath for something spectacular that never appeared except GeOW3 looked pretty wicked, but overall definitely lacking. Well I guess theres always next year. Also Kinect looked awful man, really hope Move lives up to expectations.

Rainstorm812623d ago

Thats what a free Xbox 360 S can do for your perception of a press conference.

biggame9012623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

Agree, Alpha. Outside of ESPN (which I like as a sports fan), the entire conference was a major disappointment. Kinetic had too much time being shown, and, in terms of games, there was borderline nothing.

Seriously, was IGN watching the same conference I saw?

jaredhart2623d ago

is in pending. Read it, they are all glowing about how wonderfull the MS presentation was...what a bunch of BS!

LightofDarkness2623d ago

Guess we know now why the heads of Xbox "left."

soxfan20052623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

The Sony fanboys here really make me laugh. Before E3, they were predicting MS would use celebrities to hype their conference and distract people from the games.

Now, the reaction is "How boring - all they showed were games".

EDIT @ below - you really think MS has been quiet all year long? Alan Wake, & Splinter Cell have already released. Crackdown 2 is weeks away. Halo Reach & Fable 3 later this year. That's hardly "quiet".

I was satisfied because I know that the games MS announces at E3 will be available before the next E3, unlike other developers. Padding a list of games by making announcements about games that are years away certainly wouldn't satisfy me.

Rainstorm812623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

The games MS and all of its fans only care about.

I understand not showing things years in advanced but MS is quiet all year then quiet at E3 i mean when is it time to talk about games?

Thier presser was named "MS the future of gaming" I guess the hardcore wasnt included in that future besides 3-4 hardcore games. I just hope Sony doesnt drown us with even more motion controls.

If so..."Greatest E3 of All Time" Will be the worst for the Core gamer.

Soxfan you were satisfied with MS's showing? I think everyone was bored with the casual overload, Gears 3, Halo, ESPN, new xbox360 and MGS:R all impressed me. Other than that.............

Edit @ above
Yea Sony has been just as active with MAG, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Modnation Racers, & 3d Dot Game Heroes. Thats the thing with sony they announce soo many games then end up delivering like near 10 exclusives within a year, I hope this E3 will give us clarity on even more coming within the year. Personally i watch E3 to see what is coming that appeals to me, NO ONE CARES ABOUT CASUAL GAMES! thats why the general consensus every year is that Ninty loses E3. E3 is for Core gamers...........BTW you forgot Mass Efect 2 the best game for 360 this year IMHO.

madjedi2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

@soxfan So do some of the 360 ones, so the entire damn gaming population basically is watching e3, even if they don't own the particular console.

Crackdown 2 is coming out in 2 weeks, it is one of the few exclusive games that ms can claim as their own. At the largest gaming convention in the world and ms doesn't feel the need to show some gameplay footage or a demo unit. Either ms doesn't want to show it off, because it's horrible, or ms are just plain stupid.

Actually the reaction is all they showed was 5 games everyone expected to hear from, and nothing else gamewise except for natal mini games, and 2 of the games shown are multiplats. For anyone not dying for natal, the conference was a bit light on the hardcore/core games department.

Now since sony's e3 conference is tomorrow and not already passed, can you plz refrain from saying any stupid comments. Of course sony has not shown any gameplay from the last guardian, the agent ect, when the day to show off your games to the world is in a couple of hours dumbass.

I agree with Alpha.

MS hasnt release any new info on new games in months. I thought E3 was going to be HUGE like SUPER HUGE. They had said before that there be 2 conferences one for natal and one for ms. What ever happen to that ? Started out ok Halo , Gear and fable bla blah . Ok now that out of the way. Lets see all the great new games but instead it went to natal. I thought this was goin to be a quick reminder about it then back to the games. 10-15 mins I was asleep. Woke up near the end they were still talkin natal. I thought I only nod off for 1-2 min cause next they show off the new xbox. Ok thats nice ok now lets see the games......................... ...wtf the conference is over.

I didnt see a single new

I think I'll go cry myself to sleep now

despair2623d ago

its IGN Alpha they have some serious Xbox fanboys on staff...not all of them but the senior guys are real biased pricks*cough*hilary goldstein*cough*. So of course many will tow the line of the 360 impressive show or not.

DarkTower8052623d ago

Of course they were impressed. MS gave everyone in the audience a free new 360.

Redgehammer2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

why does it keep putting my comments down here, i am trying to respond to alpa's first comment--weird.

please delete this stupid post as well, it is putting my replies in the worng place.

Redgehammer2623d ago

In many of the comments, of yours, that I have read you seem to be quite level-headed , and more of a centrist-minded gamer. That being said I don't think I have ever seen your agree to disagree ratio be so high (29-2). :D

I guess I'll add that to the list of things that make me say hmmm

Just for the record I disagreed with you only because I have a different perspective, but it's late and I am to tired to enumerate why (again).

EVILDEAD3602623d ago

Everything they did was a complete win-win for the company and the console..they put together their best case ever for increasing their install base by huge number this holiday.

The hardware

New design addressing the complaints..Wifi + reduced noise + bigger hard drive + more reliable

Kinect - absolutely for the kids..but the cam tech features on top of the kid games may attract more than the haters on any site believe

The Games..

Halo Reach - The Star Wars of console FPS just cemented what we knew from the Beta..dominance of 2010

Gear of War 3 - the biggest 3rd person franchise this gen

Fable- the largest selling RPG exclusive

Instead of B.S.ing the world by relying on Beatle Rock Band to lead the show...

Call of Duty: Black Ops proved they are a force to be reckoned with..

Metal Gear Rising- is only getting downplayed because it's on the 360 too..had it been a PS3 exclusive it would have been on every fan list for the past year.

As for the Kinect stuff..no matter how cheesy any of them were..it will do for Microsoft 1 million times fold what Viva Pinata, Banjoo, in the movies, Scene it could have ever done.

The animal game alone has the ability to blow open that market..the 3rd parties will hold it through the year..and just like the Wii the big games will drop..

But Kinetic did what NOBODY said it could do was work with a big title like Forza 3..

Plus they dropped an Oprah moment for E3 history

Can't wait to see Last Guardian tommorow..and the rest of both shows...

Love E3..

Evil

madjedi2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

The hardware New design addressing the complaints..Wifi + reduced noise + bigger hard drive + more reliable. Now weren't you going on a week or so ago how wifi wasn't needed, and a $100 for wifi wasn't too much.

The Games.. Halo Reach - The Star Wars of console FPS just cemented what we knew from the Beta..dominance of 2010 For the halo heads yeah, the rest of us not hardly.

Gear of War 3 - the biggest 3rd person franchise this gen, again debatable, i would think the me series would be bigger.

Fable- the largest selling RPG exclusive. Somehow i am willing to bet some of the rpgs like the dragonquest series have outsold it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops proved they are a force to be reckoned with.. Yes unfortunately it's also coming out on the ps3, so what was your point again?

Metal Gear Rising- is only getting downplayed because it's on the 360 too..had it been a PS3 exclusive it would have been on every fan list for the past year.

And you confuse the reaction by metal gear fans, its not because it's also on the 360, it's not console fanboyism. It the fact that kojima isn&
