Microsoft Kinect gets into motion

Kinect's built-in camera and microphone (due later this year, no price set) uses facial and voice recognition to let you, for instance, log onto Xbox Live, start games and pause movies. And a new menu lets you choose games or services such as Netflix by simply reaching out and pointing toward the screen selection. Video chat lets Xbox 360 homes connect; the smart camera widens when another person enters the room.

i read some of the names like kinnect-sports and the only thing that popped into my head was um ok wii sports?

the majority of the games will be targeted at the casual crowd obviously

deadreckoning6662624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

I'm getting VERY excited now.

"Officially lost all interest in Kinect (previously Natal), It is squarely aimed at casuals, which is fine, just not my cup of tea"

I don't understand. How are you so certain that what you mentioned will be the ONLY things Kinect is capable of? As far as your other comment is concerned, how do you know Microsoft didn't let this out intentionally? Suddenly the PSP Go fiasco springs to mind.

And besides, those games u mentioned sound great to me. If that makes me a casual gamer in your eyes..okay sure, whatever floats ur boat. I'm a gamer and I enjoy fun games regardless of their intended audience.

EDIT: Well qface, the thing with me is that I see the SAME people coming to Natal articles to simply downplay it because its only for "teh casuals"

1. So what? I'm a hardcore gamer..that doesn't mean I can't enjoy casuals games

2. How are people so certain that Natal won't have any hardcore games??

3. Why do people come to Natal articles just to downplay it? Immortal Kain took all the time to post a description of all those Kinetic games...yet he says its "not my cup tea" lol..what?

I'm not saying anyone MUST be excited about it, but if you know ur not interested...why keep posting?

qface642624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

but he somewhat has a point
what reason does he have to be excited about when everything about natal is for the casual crowd
sure there will be so called hardcore games for it but the majority of em will obviously be for the casual crowd

im not being one of those natal/kinnect is fail causal LOL... guys
im just saying why should people at this moment be excited for natal?

-Alpha2624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

People don't have many reasons to be excited for Natal just yet but that's because MS really hasn't shown anything appealing for us. That does not mean they don't have anything and seeing how secretive MS has been makes me think they have huge surprises in store, especially when they have a special conference only for Natal. Don't forget MS has two conferences.

Of course it will appeal to the casual crowd. That's what MS probably wants anyway. However, it's just a couple days away so let's just wait to see how Kinect works with the "hardcore" games we play. These demo games sound like crap, but what did you expect? Look at MOVE and it's games like shaving the hair off aliens or playing archery. Of course the difference is that we know MOVE works well with shooters and stuff. I really wonder if MS will release a controller like the Nunchuck for movement, I honestly see it happening if they want to make hardcore games more accessible. However MS seems to be going a totally different way, and that's cool. I don't want them to do motion controls like Sony and Nintendo, and I don't mind them following in the footsteps of EyeToy. It's going to bring about difference experiences and that's what I point to see. I am interested in Natal because I trust MS has huge things in store. They've been silent all year and it's foolish to think that they wont have huge things for E3. I hope they don't disappoint us. I always tend to be positive for E3, and it's going to be no different in this case. I fear for Natal's appeal, but I want to stay optimistic about it. We know MS is investing heavily with Natal, let's just hope it's with us "hardcore" gamers in mind.

Time will tell but I'm so excited for tomorrow. God, this is better than Christmas.

heroicjanitor2624d ago

Are we only allowed to post positive opinions? A bit of banter in the comments section is healthy, bitching at anyone who makes a slightly negative comment isn't.

Aquanox2624d ago

"Kinect" is a good name, means "movement" or "motion". It comes from the Greek "κίνησις" .

Cool Cool, let the information avalaunch begin!!

niceguywii602624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

"but he somewhat has a point/what reason does he have to be excited about"

The technology potential for one then the new experiences it will bring.

Immortal Kaim2624d ago

Um dude, I have been one of the people advocating not passing judgements on Natal until we had more concrete info, we now have more solid info that suggests Kinect will be more casual focused. I'm not downplaying it at all, some people will enjoy those games, I simply said it isn't my cup of tea. Lighten up.

qface642624d ago

@nicewiiguy

so your saying everyone should be excited about natal just because of WHAT IT MIGHT DO and not what it has been shown to do?

my point is it doesn't matter much about its potential if no one knows what that potential is or if that potential will ever even be reached

why people are excited citing natal as the next movement in games when so far its just looking like another wii

if people were going crazy because they just showed (insert name here) runnin on natal or they showed natal doing (insert name here) then i would understand

but so far natal is just looking like another wii so im not excited and why the so called 360 fans are going nuts about it makes little sense to me

im not saying natal will be bad or is bad im saying there isn't much reason to be excited SO FAR

DamonTheMoney2624d ago

Actually "kinetic" is the term for movement. "Kinect" is not a word lol

I guess they've combined the words "kinetic" and "connect"? I hate it when companies do that lol

But still, not a bad name :)

Inside_out2624d ago

E3 is like xmas...lol...Alpha...things happening all over...cruising a few favorite websites then BAM...Names, prices, pictures up, then there down...LMFAO...luv the new design, if true...hope it is...the bundle is the way to go...Rumor of 2 different prices...one as high as $189...Hope the bundle comes in at $299 or lower...Day one ( I think ) same for the Move...this is turning into the best E3 ever...haven't even scene Halo or Gears yet...bring it on...

Aquanox2624d ago

Learn to read. I said where Kinect comes from, obviously, it's not a word, just like playstation wasn't before it was trademarked.

DamonTheMoney2624d ago

Ok mate :) just a misunderstanding. No need for hostility now

Fanb0y2624d ago

I just played Wii Sports for the first time in my life yesterday. I cannot believe I enjoyed it.

But haters gonna hate.

"Dance Central" is the only one that sounds like it will really benefit from being without a controller.

Raf1k12624d ago

It also sounds like the one that doesn't require anything but a Hi-Fi. Looking forward to tomorrow. MS is usually good at getting people excited even over small stuff.

Godmars2902624d ago

So long as you can record and share the videos.

rob60212624d ago

MTV games does Rockband, so I'm assuming it will be Rockband graphics/ character models? I don't see the appeal in dancing with avatars or cartoony guys. I'd rather have realistic looking characters, we'll see.

Looking at that picture makes my arms tired.

Briefcase Joe2624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

Why are their avatars mirrored on the floor? The floor doesn't look very shiny to me. I get what they were trying to do, but it doesn't work for me. I'm thinking too hard. LOL.

Imperator2624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

Wow...MS just lost their biggest reveal..

And from the article it seems like this will indeed focus on Casuals.. guess I won't be buying it.

ARBitrator2624d ago

Okay, see you later...don't worry about keeping us up on your furture plans. Bye Now,drive carefully (you hardcore gamer you.)

@6.1 (MajestieBeast)

It's no different from the wiimote/numchuk clone. At least MS went with something a little more innovative than just straight copying Nintendo.

Look at the features the PS3 had when it launched and look at how many things it has incorporated the MS and Nintendo already had previously. Especially when it comes to PSN, hell sony would have been better off leasing space from MS to use XBL for the PS3.
Every PSN updates has something stolen form XBL.

I know a bunch of you in denial crybabies will hit the disagree button but you know damn well it's true. I have seen absolutely NOTHING done with Move that could not have been done with the wiimote.

Stop Hating...Whiners!

Arnon2624d ago

>Implying they weren't going to announce Natal on June 13th.

Godmars2902624d ago

Like news like this is going to be on the evening news before its officially revealed.

EVILDEAD3602624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

The first add-on ever..officially for hyper kids who can't keep still and lazy parents who hate looking for the remote..

I laughed at some of the games..the 'adventures' sounds silly but wow..volleyball..ingenious..bo wling is cool (the most popular game on the Wii period)..but I can't wait to here about all the kids punting holes into the big screen playing soccer.

LOL..@ Madden 2011..with REAL kickoffs and field goals..I would buy it day one just for that..

I already was doing holidays with family across the country with the regular 360 cam..Kinect sounds like they might take it to a new level..

The funny part was how the 'karate' game showed up a year later for Sony move..and now 'EyePet' shows up for Natal and there are like 20 animals..kids are going to eat this thing up..

Salutes..USA today for completely breaking the rules and providing this nugget BEFORE the event even started..LOL

The funny part is all of these 360 haters claiming it's a loss because 'they' won't buy it and it's only for casuals..bingo! That's the WHOLE point..Halo Reach, Gears 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops will still sell over 5 million a piece for the 'hardcore'..this gets you millions from the non-video game crowd..similiar to PS3 wisely attracting the Blu-Ray audience..

The verdict is still out..let's here how it works and if there is an actual announcement or two left for it..

You spelled casuals wrong.

Godmars2902624d ago

So's "combat" in "Mortal Kombat" but know one's complained about it. Even parents groups, who were too busy bi*ching over the blood/decapitation thing back in the day.

PS360PCROCKS2624d ago

you used the wrong form of "no"

PoSTedUP2624d ago

as far as i'm concerned, a game that makes you jump and move your hands feet etc. thats as hardcore as it gets. to hardcore for me, i like sitting on my couch with my couch and my butt and my hands and my controller. i get my cardio workout with the intense addrenalin rush of MotorstormPR, soon all in 3D.

voice recognition thing sounds cool though, futureistic like stargate or star trek or something. i hope it all works out.

From the story, here are the games in the works apparently.

Among games in the works:

•Kinectimals lets you train and play with 20 different virtual cats, including a lion, cheetah and tiger.

•Joyride, a racing game, lets players use their hands to hold an imaginary steering wheel — pull your hands toward you and push back out for an acceleration boost — and their bodies to execute jumps and tricks.

•Kinect Sports has six activities including boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, track and field, soccer and table tennis. To serve a volleyball, you mimic the real motion; in soccer, you can kick the ball or do a header.

•Kinect Adventures includes a river-raft time trial and obstacle course, playable by up to four players. On the raft, playing as a duo, you and a partner must lean one way or another to steer. Jumping helps the raft reach special areas for extra points.

•Dance Central, in development by MTV Games, brings a So You Think You Can Dance experience home.

•Star Wars characters and iconic Disney favorites will be featured in separate new games being developed at Microsoft in conjunction with LucasArts and Disney.

Officially lost all interest in Kinect (previously Natal), It is squarely aimed at casuals, which is fine, just not my cup of tea.

It's leaking like the Titanic now, there goes MS's press conference :)

Hallmark Moment2624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

Those are the games already announced so how can that turn you off? Just because of the name? Microsoft already said they are covering all gamer types. What ever floats your boat.

Can't wait to see Kinect system software and dash integration and its other games reported to be around 15 Kinect games shown in the next week.

LOL Microsoft had somebody mistakenly? leak huge announcements an hour and a half early.

The web is going to be on fire with pissed off fanboys hating on the things that are going to be revealed(leaked now) yet the very same things being revealed are the things they were just a few hours ago stressing were needed for any chance of success.

LOL

The only thing fanboys can rebuttal is: bu bu bu I tuatttt Micro had a lockdown. The leaks will only be 90 minutes old. LowL

GREAT NAME FOR NATAL AND THE SEXIEST CONSOLE EVER.

NO ONE CARES WHAT YOU SAY PS3 FANS.

Esena2624d ago

•Kinectimals lets you train and play with 20 different virtual cats, including a lion, cheetah and tiger.

You are right Hallmark, we can't be judgmental on the name....
