WingDamage: VD-W3 Wii HDMI Upscaler Processor Review

WingDamage: "With the increasing number of HDTVs in homes, many Wii owners have cried out for a “Wii HD”; something that could make their games shine with all the P’s the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have been enjoying. In all honesty, I don’t think the Wii HD will ever happen. I feel brave (or stupid) enough to say that right before E3.

Our only non-emulator based HD solution for Wii seems to lie in the VD-W3 Wii HDMI Upscaler Processor. But does it actually work?"

I figured. It's not like it would change the games' native resolutions.

upscale <<<<<<<&l t;<<<<<<<& lt;<<<<<<< <<<<<<<< ;<<<<<<<&l t;<<< native
many people don't know this

an upscale has the same amount of detail as the original resolution.
let me explain this:
consider you have a picture of 1920*1080 pixels of a mountain landscape, we gonna downscale it to 2*2 pixels, now the landscape is not really a landscape anymore because the image consists out of 4 pixels(=not enough detail for a mountain landscape)
if we upscale the 4*4 picture to 1920*1080 you will not see the landscape but instead 4 big blocks(= the 4 pixels stretched)
==>upscale does not increase detail

so you might ask, "what's the point of upscaling?"
1) tv's and monitors have a built-in upscaler so that images lower than the native resolution of the tv would fit the whole screen, but this buit-in upscaler sucks for many tv's causing a blurry picture(this is why many gamers(like pandamobile) think the HDready resolution sucks(but it is their monitor's upscaler who sucks instead, HDready is decent resolution on a 720p native tv/monitor)

2)interpolation: while upscaling you can interpolate the pixels, reducing the overall jaginess of the image

Good upscaling is still nothing like high resolution. If you want HD wii games, then get the dolphin emulator on a gaming PC

This processor will be an epic fail :P the graphic card in the WII wont handle the hdmi port and will die some day.

Lol, its cute how you think you know what the hell you're talking about...

This add-on does the upscaling of the image the WII puts out so there is no extra strain on the WII.

So yeah ....

a simple way to improve wii image quality is to use a 4:3 aspect ratio. Max wii res is 640*480 regardless of aspect ratio. Trouble is 640*480 is a 4:3 aspect vga resolution. So viewing in widescreen you are effectively stretching the output image horizontally and exacerbating the aliasing problems SD games without AA have.
I have the vdigi wii vga cable outputting to an old fashioned 4:3 CRT( no shitty LCD/Plasma scaling needed) and the image is glorious, I cant go back to connecting it too my Plasma now. Even blurry shite like Dirt2 wii actually looks sharp through VGA on CRT.

I had a dream last night that nintendo unveiled a wii hd add-on for the wii, which will make all current and future wii games hd.

dreams can come true, right?
