CVG: 'Japanese RPGs aren't declining in the West - they were never popular to begin with'
He is right to an extent, aside from Final Fantasy and a few other titles, JRPGS weren't that big outside of Japan. Most of them either sell decently or horribly.
ignore this post.. this n4g reply system is so confusing now.
Confirmed. Because M$ is jealous, want to hog up other company's huge market share or just plain make more money is the most stupidest reason to be in the video games business. M$ failed even before it started with the JRPG. Billions of dollars wasted trying to make the Xbox a PlayStation. On top of that this recurring problem of monotonous creative slump we have seen on Japanese developers then M$ timing couldn't be any better even given that it waged war on Japanese soil. So how could it be much better in the West? I really miss Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross....
People buy games which are good and are marketed well. Japanese RPGs this gen have either been of poor quality or poorly marketed. Valkyria Chronicles, excellent game and sega wonder why it didnt sell? Because noone had bloody heard of it. Its not good when you go into a game store and the people working there arent familiar with what you;re talking about.
VC is NOT JRPG.
SRPG, JRPG fits into the same mould no? Theyre both role playing games. You know what i mean. A japanese developed RPG.
Contrary to what's constantly and wrongfully stated , Valkyria did extremely well ... It is a simple fact , tactical rpgs , that arent from the following franchises : Final fantasy , super robot taisen , and maybe 1-2 max that i forgot to mention , DO NOT sell as well as VC did , regardless of their quality . It's the same thing in both japan , and the west
I have to say that valkyria got reprinted twice.. so it sold .. it didn't sell RIGHT way but it managed to please everyone on the long run
Sega publicly stated that it is happy about VC sales, and it has reached almost a million, more than Lost Odessey.
With me as i'll take a jrpg over an wrpg any day of the week. Chrono, Mana, Dark Cloud, Suikoden, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy, Wild Arms, Xenogears, Kingdom Hearts I would take anytime over wrpg with the small exception of some of Bioware's game.
And God do I wish that Konami would announce Suikoden VI already. And FOR CONSOLES not frickin' handhelds like Tierkreis was. Suikoden is my second favorite JRPG franchise.
Agreed. I think most of the great RPGs have been pushed onto handhelds and they expect mediocre JRPGs to work just as well on HD consoles. We may love JRPGs, but that does not mean we'll jump at ANYTHING you'll throw at us. The sad part is that they rather spend their resources re-making/emulating these games on DS/PSP rather than working on a new sequel (or w/e) for HD consoles. What was the last established JRPG we have seen? FF-series. that's it. All of the popular JRPG's have yet to appear on HD consoles :( Ps2 era was great for JRPGs, this gen is just pure crap if ur a JRPG fan.. I upgraded expecting great JRPGs, and it's been a let down for me so far.. with very few good JRPGs to play This gen (again I'm mainly talking about HD consoles) is soo focused on FPS/TPS genre. It's great for some people, while the rest of the genres are dying.
I couldn't agree more with what you said even if you added "and pizza is awesome". Bubbles for pure truth.
Yup. The thing about the decent-selling RPGs is that they have a rabid following, which is nearly as good as having a larger market. You don't get nearly as many casual passers-by in the JRPG market, so companies can be pretty certain that a certain number of people will buy a good new title in a long-standing franchise... or anything by Square Enix. Therefore, the games keep getting made. Which is good for me :)
In order for Microsoft to compete in the console business, they had to make sure that they had a very diverse catalog of games and genres. One of the main complaints about the Xbox was the lack of RPGs (mostly of the Japan variety). The 360 doesn't have that problem, despite how pointless you or others may think it may have been for Microsoft to make the console a little more appealing to a niche set of fans. If an RPG gamer only owns a 360, at least they can say that they have some games to play now and look forward to. Unless the games are terrible, at least those gamers can be happy with their purchase...no matter how many or few in number they are.
ABSOLUTELY AGREE with you, im a happy 360 rpg player and thats a fact, my first 360 game was lost odyssey.
It is but it's just sad in a way. I'm just glad that people had a chance to experience Dark Cloud. My god was that a sick game. Which is just all the more odd that White Knight Chronicles is more like an MMO. No RPG feel to it at all. That's just MY opinion though.
Pokemon disagrees with that statement :P
Someone should be begging the question why any western games dont sell over there either..
"There seems to be widespread concern for the Japanese games industry in general at the moment. Even in Japan itself, Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi said the Japanese gaming industry doesn't have "a hope in hell" of catching up to the west if it doesn't evolve." The money is in the West now and Japan is too busy with handhelds nowadays.
Finally , been repeating this for quite a while . I dont know in wich era the "jrpg are dying" folks actually lived . It never really took of in the west , except for a few franchises who are selling well the same amount (trash talk ffxiii all you want it's still at 5 million in mere months) . God forbid a midly popular jrpg sells 200k in the west , when well that's what they've always been doing , only with less trolls calling them flops on blogs or forums
This is why it baffles me when people harp on the 360 and its JRPG sales. The sales for these "failed" JRPGs are actually NORMAL. Final Fantasy series and maybe DQ series have been traditionaly the only big sellers. Everything else would be lucky do half a million lifetime.
thing is , i can't entirely agree ceedubya9 ... Take star ocean 4 , despite its flaws , the serie has always been big in the 800k-millions units ballpark , at least in japan . By making it 360 timed exclusive , they've nerfed their own sales . It's no secret that the 360 was dead in the water in japan , sure they had to try promoting their console with a diverse selection og genre and title , and i'm thankful for it . But some devs definitively lost potential sales in japan , for long standing franchises , by going 360 exclusives rather than multiplatform , ps3 exclusive , or even better wii exclusive .
The funny thing is, no matter how many people call Star Ocean 4 a mediocre JRPG, it's actually a very good Star Ocean game. It easily expands upon SO3, and has a crapload of humour and great characters, especially if you play the game in Japanese. The scene with Edge walking in on Reimi in the shower is hilarious. As JRPGs go, it's a great game and those who don't expect too much from a game (far too many people these days) will enjoy the heck out of it. Not to mention I never get sick of listening to Sarah's airheaded speak. :P
It's a real shame how poor jrpgs do.. tales of vesperia was a great game yet about a month after release, nobody stocked new copies anymore.. at least where I live. Same for resonance of fate, i've only ever seen that in one shop.
Okay, in the article, the director of Lost Planet 2 says that evolution's necessary in JRPG's. Really. Says the guy who made a giant me-too of the Monster Hunter franchise. But also, he's right, but not in a "Japan needs to make brown-and-green gritty games to grab the USA Modern Warfare crowd" kind of evolution. Look at what Platinum is doing with Vanquish. Japan has so much they can contribute to newer Western trends, be they RPG's or third-person shooters - making them leaner, faster, tougher, more colorful, and with much better music. For example, why can't we have the best parts of "bullet-hell" shmups merged with the FPS genre? Only because no one's done that yet! If Japan can get their act in gear, we may see some of the most awesomely unique stuff ever.
Microsoft is as shitty as it's products. http://www.youtube.com/watc... http://www.youtube.com/watc... http://www.youtube.com/watc...
bleh people only wanna shoot crap. the only western rpgs i ever enjoyed were elderscrolls, fallout, gothic 2, arcanum and diablo. i cant stand bioware games personally, maybe if the combat was....a little bit funner i would like them more. to me nothing is better than a good jrpg. i cannot wait for a new valkyrie profile game, its on of my favorite series :D
only some jrpgs are known in the western market...
If the production values were up to par with western games, maybe people would be more interested and try some of them. But unfortunately most of them don't meet today's technical standards and expectations. You can't charge the same full price for something that didn't cost as much to develop.
Final Fantasy fanbase says hi
Final fantasy ( AND POKEMON ) are the exceptions...
and this is where square are shooting thenmselves in the foot i love jrpgs but they see the numbers on games like call of duty and think if they westernize there rpgs they will do the same. there logic fails hard
And to quote a famous jRPG hero: "..."
Where as there is a huge fan base here in the states for JRPGs, they arnt what makes the game world cycle in this country. We seem to be a much much more fps focused country. But we do have a lot of gun nuts here. Not that that a bad thing, aside from guns bore me personally :P The western market does publicity quite differently then Japan. Or a few other countries. Like the way we do celebrities. hey are royalty in this country. Controversy sells. An actor does some abominable thing doesn't hurt their career, it makes it. Where as somewhere like Japan, if an actor does some hideous thing, people dont want to work with them. Shame. Makes their product look bad. Etc. I know thats not it 100% of the time, but generally, yes. It seems to be similar here with the gaming industry. Games were popular, but never like they were until people started flipping out, and choosing sects to war with each other over... Which I'll never understand. There is also a LOT in this country that freaks us out. Boobs, blood, guts, cursing. Hell yes! Fancy graphics, hell yes! A story from the heart with emotion, or anything that raises something other then your little friend is WEIRD, WRONG, FREAKISH, etc etc. JRPGs - despite people rabid fears of them by smashing and flaming - a lot of times delve into story areas that most Americans just dont want to go. It's weird. Not right. ... You get it by now ^_^ Example? It's acceptable for a 16 year old boy to go see an NC17 movie. But a 16 year old boy goes on his own to see Twilight, his Dad is sending him to counseling and the kids and school are beating him down xD We have a very low tolerance to anything outside our safety zone. And unfortunately th safety zone is defined by the people that are scared of everything that they cant blow up. Like thinking. And Twinkies. So on that note- no. JRPGs never will be as popular in America, the land of fake boobs and entertainment. Because whats entertaining about teenagers saving the world without implants? @[email protected]
