Game Journalists Should Drop Preview Coverage

Chris highlights an issue with games journalism that media scholars Robert McChesney and John Nichols have long recognized as a problem with the mainstream news press -- reliance on official sources. Much preview coverage for games easily falls into this trap because publishers and developers hold all the information, which gives journalists an incentive to play nice in exchange for access.

my problem with preview coverage is that i end up knowing too much about the game, killzone 2 springs immediately to mind. i knew exactly what each level and each enemy looked like and there was no surprises left.

The author is not really looking at the bigger picture.

Previews are important in building hype. Without that you wouldn't have gamers rushing out day one to buy these games. The author mentions publishers as a major force deteriorating preview quality by asserting their influence over the editorial process. I agree, but is the solution really to get rid of previews? Why not create an industry where the publisher can't push journalists around?

Allow journalists to openly criticize companies who do this kind of thing, then you'll find the media as a whole will gain more control over their content and opinions thereby still providing accurate previews and reviews for interested gamers. Saying "we give up!" and removing previews only hurts one group: gamers.
