Sony/Ericsson: We Don’t Want the Unemployed

The Sony/Ericsson U.S. corporate headquarters is moving to a suburb outside of Atlanta, Georgia. As you’d expect, they put up a help wanted ad.

What you might not expect are the conditions: “NO UNEMPLOYED CANDIDATES WILL BE CONSIDERED AT ALL”.

Apparently Georgia offered up $4 million in various tax credits to attract the operation and bring 180 jobs to the area, but nobody expected that Sony (or anyone else, really) would deny folks who have the bad luck to be unemployed.

The logic is apparently three fold:

* They don’t want an avalanche of resumes.
* If someone has been out of work it takes longer to bring them up to speed.
* Folks who have managed to keep their jobs in an economic down-turn are more valuable.
Cold comfort for folks who have been out of work for a long time.

"Job hunters are facing a new trend: businesses asking recruitment companies to keep unemployed people out of their job pools."

Am I now supposed to feel bad for the unemployed folks?

Should we now burn the Sony flag?

Before anyone is considering throwing their PS3s against the walls, let it be known that Sony Ericsson is not Sony.

Sony Ericson is a joint venture and is practically a seperate entity. At best, Sony owns some shares in the company.

What a garbage of an article.

@poopface. That was a figure of speech, son. Damn, more school and less games for you. You are not going places.

theKiller3034d ago

this is sony business how and who they want to hire!! this is related to anything except gaming!!

there is even more harsh hiring policies applied by other smaller companies!!!

coolasj3034d ago

but seriously, snap up the jobs the people that move to Sony leave behind.

Wrathman3034d ago

i can see where they are coming from but i got laid off because i had 2.5 days sick last year.nothing to do with experience or skill.just absent.then they sent me a letter 2 weeks later askin me to come back thru an do the same job but for a lot less money.

yeah..i told them to go fvck themselves

KingME3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

Please don't respond if you can't answer truthfully from the heart.

Had this article read "Microsoft: We Don’t Want the Unemployed"

Would the people on this site be making the "SAME" comments that they are currently making, with the exception of replace "Sony with Microsoft"?

I think from a PR standpoint, Sony should have never said this, they should have just ignored the applicants that doesn't fit their must be employeed requirement.

Disagree: if you feel people would respond the same.
Agree: If you feel people would respond differently.

HolyOrangeCows3034d ago

Over 10% of Americans are unemployed right now, and companies start making policies that keep them out of the system.

And these stupid tax credits: Sony gets a $4 million tax credit to create jobs and they don't, Silicon Knights (Too Human dev) received $4 million.

What is this world coming to?

DaTruth3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

Take that letter to your nearest labour law lawyer! They will be paying you for staying home for a long time!!!

I mean, unless you don't have progressive labour laws where you live. Here in Ontario Canada, everyone is cleaning up on court imposed severance! You can tell your boss to fu(k off in front of everyone and he has to warn you in writing after three infractions before he can fire you... And he's still not guaranteed to win the case.

But Sony as of late is becoming one of the Biggest A HOLE'ish companies of this 2010 year.

Not game related at all, but WTF?

sikbeta3034d ago

I respect your Opinion, BUT:

WTF Happened with N4G = NEWS FOR [GAMERS]!!!?

To Put it simply, Sony/Ericsson Division, Which 50% is Owned by Sony and 50% is owned by Ericsson GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH Sony Gaming Division aka PlayStation and GAMING at all!!!!

heroicjanitor3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

And how is this bad for the unemployed? The jobs that are left will be open to the unemployed.

DaTruth3034d ago

@Heroicjanitor: The companies who have the jobs that are left are refusing to hire the unemployed!

sikbeta3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

Late Edit for my first Comment Above:

Sony-Ericsson is a [Joint Venture] = 2 Companies that "Team Up", Sony Mobile-Phone Division is 100% Owned by SONY, Both, Sony and Ericsson share Development + Profits by 50% in this "legal entity"...

Microsoft Xbox 3603034d ago

Hey whatever works. That's their business model.

How was I off-topic? I commented accordingly on the article!

that's that ridiculous bubble system. complain here:

Crazyglues3034d ago

When a company as big as Sony says they don't want to hire people who are unemployed...

That's just ridiculous... how the hell are people who are unemployed suppose to get back to work if Stupid Companies like this say they don't want to hire people who are not working..

I can't believe Sony would be so dumb. Sad

Cold 20003034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

Nobody complained when it was about MS.

I hope they realize that while this may fly in Japan. Here in America it just makes them look like D-Bags.

lzim3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

try to imagine the relevance to unemployed gamers

I'll sleep in a polio soaked blanked before buying anything playstation branded.

Silver3603034d ago

Sony can't even make the PSP into a psp cell phone because of this company. When they split Sony had to sign a non compete agreement. Sony does not own them. They are a past partner, Ericsson runs the Sony-Ericsson.

Colonel-Killzone3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

LMAO DAMN that is harsh. But their a multi billion dollar company can't really blame them. But it does sucks for a lot of people looking to get a job :/

LinuxGuru3034d ago

Really dumb move. They are missing out on potentially hundreds of awesome candidates that are, through one circumstance or another, unemployed.

What if someone lost their job yesterday and they wanted to apply today?

coolasj3034d ago

what it takes to be classified as unemployed? its not a one day thing.

Spydr073034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

To go along with the above person's statement:

To summarize, employed persons are:

* All persons who did any work for pay or profit during the survey week.
* All persons who did at least 15 hours of unpaid work in a family-owned enterprise operated by someone in their household.
* All persons who were temporarily absent from their regular jobs because of illness, vacation, bad weather, industrial dispute, or various personal reasons, whether or not they were paid for the time off.

Unemployed persons are:

* All persons who did not have a job at all during the survey reference week, made at least one specific active effort to find a job during the prior 4 weeks, and were available for work (unless temporarily ill).
* All persons who were not working and were waiting to be called back to a job from which they had been laid off (they need not be looking for work to be classified as unemployed).

A little knowledge can go a long way. If you want to know more on what constitutes "Unemployment", check here:

Hope this helps.

Also, N4G is News 4 Gamers, but does it say that such news can only be about, or directly related to, games/video games? Just curious.

Double Toasted3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

Edit: Linux Guru, I agree completely, this is rather tasteless...

Damn, I can't believe Sony is saying this. To me personally, even though I'm not a die hard fan of their's I still would have to reach for straws on finding something negative to say about them, minus the OS situation. But this is...idk.

fr0sty3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

if Sony hires 180 currently employed workers, that's 180 jobs that just became available for the unemployed. 180 people quitting their current jobs. can't hate on them for only wanting quality workers, and those who kept their jobs in this day and age are definitely quality workers.

JonahFalcon3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

Because Sony is looking for candidates from across the States, not Georgia. Georgia's entire point was to have jobs created in Georgia.

Alcohog3034d ago

You make a valid point.

Charmers3034d ago (Edited 3034d ago )

Another example of a company abusing the tax system. I think it is reprehensible that Sony (or any other company) abuse the $4 million in tax credits. This is primarily why I am totally against companies receiving any tax incentives because they just abuse them.

It is also astonishing that a company would exclude such a large pool of potentially dedicated hard workers and sends a horrible message to the unemployed. I am sure this isn't just a Sony thing and other companies do this, just not in a blatantly obvious way.

It sucks to be unemployed and having companies treat you like a pariah just because you find yourself in that situation is pretty sick and disgusting.
