Is DLC Really the Future

Downloadable content (DLC) has existed in gaming since the Atari 2600 first allowed games to be transferred with a telephone line. It was introduced to make transactions easier and as a way for developers to get their content out to the public at a cheaper expense.

I hope not. I'm not a huge fan of DLC.

smashly3039d ago

Me too, I never really buy DLC. Games are expensive enough, I don't want to spend any more money than I have too. Plus with junk like costume packs, and extra horde mode levels, who needs that crap.

lociefer3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

the thought of DLC makes developers lazy to finish their games completely , except for some (naughty dog, insomniac, valve: orange box)

Ninja-Sama3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

The reason this dlc nonsense is still going on is because of all the retards who buy it without question. Yes I'm call them retards because I have no sympathy for people who buy things like map packs for MW2 (with almost half of the maps recycled from the original CoD4!) and buying costumes for characters in fighting games without question. Because idiots keep falling for gimmicks like this our games are going to be continually gimped until eventually it will reach a barebones state where we'll have to unlock our game after we buy it with DLC. It's already happening...those costumes that you bought for Street Fighter were already on the disc, but you have to pay to unlock them...ridiculous.

I'm not saying all DLC is bad, but the majority of it are things that should have been included in the game itself.

Conloles3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

Sigh it used to be free on PC before consoles ruined it for all involved.

Anarki3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

I hate DLC. I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was free though, but it has become something of a necessity for devs to have DLC the day after launch ¬_¬

Bigpappy3039d ago (Edited 3039d ago )

It is the present (as in now). We will see if it is in the future when and if we get their. I have no problem with DLC. If they start making half bake games and then try to sell us the rest as DLC, that is where the problem could start. Games I have played from know great developers have been worth the price. I usually move on it thre are other good games. Very rarely do I buy DLC, but don't mind having the option.

The future as well as RIGHT now is Digital download. Cell phones are blazing that path more and more. How many people down load songs and apps everyday on devices like ipods. As people become comfortable with the tech they will DEMAND DD more and more. Kiosks will start popping up everywhere like ATM's with the latest and greatest apps. You see it already. Little hand held devices that do it all.

Connectivity is here to stay. The ipod touch is a PHENOMENON. Have you seen the latest and greatest in the cell phone world? Blackberry ( crackberry )has been around a long time and is as big as it ever was. The competition is FIERCE. Discs and paper will become obsolete and irrelevant. Will it happen today or tomorrow? NO, but it's well on it's way.

Unfornately, Greed always rears it's ugly head in these types of things. I would say greed is the reason it's taking so long. Look at the burning of fossil fuels. There is no need for that in this day and age. Don't tell that to the big oil companys tho.

Nothing will change as along as the idiots keep paying for "skins".

Of all things people waste money on silly skins, sigh.

DLC definitely is going in the wrong direction in terms of price. Things are getting more expensive where they should be getting cheaper.

mau643039d ago

I agree completely. Some companies just have no clue on how to price their DLC.

DirtyLary3039d ago

Oh they have a clue. They know exactly what they are doing. They see the numbers. They know how many lemmings pay good money for silly dlc skins. Nothing will change till the masses figure it out and stop it.

gameseveryday3039d ago

Nope, single player games was, still and will always be the future of video games. DLC are bullshit and are nothing but a means to earn more money. Look at activision, $15 for a DLC!

SKGamer3035d ago

The Modern Warfare one is a huge rip off, I agree. And a ton of the DLC out there is stupid, either just skins or a couple extra maps for a high price, etc.

But there is some really quality stuff out there as well. The DLC games for GTA IV were awesome, and were basically brand new GTA games, but for only $20.

I also liked the DLC chapters for Resident Evil 5, they were only $5 a piece and also came with new Mercenaries characters (on top of the entertaining new campaign content).

fbgamer3039d ago

Well, I've never really big on DLC (unless it's free) since I'm broke but it does give developers something to look forward to and another reason to present to consumers as to why they should care about their product and not return it to the store after you complete it... hmm

jack_burt0n3039d ago

No the future is mod nation racers as far as i am concerned just look at how much there is to download already and growing by the thousands a day.

Play, Create, Share, Motherfu*kers.
