Guerrilla breaks silence on 'that' Killzone 2 trailer...

Remember E3 2005? Cast your mind back - and recall Sony lifting the lid on Guerilla's Killzone 2 for PS3. The trailer looked amazing. Only problem was, it didn't look all that much like the final game.

Guerrilla has finally broken its silence on the incident - admitting that it was under "humongous pressure" to be seen to show off what the PS3 could do.

even if the 2005 trailer was fake what does it matter? sony was just showing us what they would be able to bring in the future and they have kept their promise!

BeaArthur5083d ago

Yeah, I don't have a problem with the trailer being fake. A lot of developers put out fake videos, it's not like I was playing the game thinking "oh if this looked like the trailer I would be enjoying this more".

Chubear5083d ago (Edited 5083d ago )

None have ever been blasted the way GG were with the 2005 trailer. They even surpassed the trailer and haters still 'till today can't accept the pwnage they got so they still claim KZ2 doesn't surpass the trailer (for whatever mental reason) and they cling onto "bu.. bu. bu. bu teh trailer, teh trailer wasn't in-game! QQ"

Remember the trailer for games as recent as Section 8? The game looked 100% nothing like the trailer but how many times did you see the media hound them?

PS3 developers have gone through some mind numbing crazy hate from the media and naysayers this gen and they deserve every single kudos they get now.

KILLZON3D!

@BELOW
Dude the explosions were way better than in trailer. Just the first one at the beginning of the game on the bridge surpassed that. The particle effects were more than the 2005 trailer and that was the opening scene.

Like I said, they FUD with the trailer claiming "LOLZ, no game can look like that even on the PS4" were so strong that even though people can look with their own eyes, their brain still tells them "no no, remember, it's impossible to even hope to come close to the target render 2005 trailer"

If you've played KZ2, I can't understand how you can say the explosion in the trailer was never reached talk less of surpassed.

KZ2 surpassed the trailer in lighting effects, particle effects, color saturation, graphical detail on weaponary, environments and Xters. Look at the 2005 trailer, the opening scene the lead Xter had no pores or hair follicles. His face looked like porcelain but in KZ2 you see all that and more on Sevs face during the same seen.

Killzone *itch slapped people into oblivion and many still haven't recovered 'till today.

Baka-akaB5083d ago

At east they did their best to have the final game looks as good as the trailer , and succeeded . Unlike 99% of the guys using fake trailers

SOme part werent as good like the explosions , but the rest was even sometimes better .l

iPad5083d ago

This generation sucks. Halo 3 looked nothing compared to the 2007 trailer. But not one single person cared. But since killzone 2 is a PS3 exclusive, they will do whatever it takes to bring it down.

MiloGarret5083d ago

Isn't that what today is known as target renders? Like the devs calculate what is possible with a given set of technical specs and then produce a trailer to attract attention form the public, investors and publishers

And don't kid yourself chubear, it's an amazing looking game and it may have been close to the trailers, but the in-game graphics did not match or surpass it.

Redempteur5083d ago

i disagree ... AT the time of the trailer release i didnot believe in it .. BUT i played killzone 2 quite a lot and seriously the game is much better than the trailer ( overall ) ..

That year a lot of fake trailer were made ( PS3 still young )and only KZ2 meet expectations .. so i see no problem here ..

CoxMulder5083d ago (Edited 5083d ago )

The game already surpassed that E3 2005 trailer back in 2007, almost 2 years before its release.

here's some proof:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

CVG once again trying to bait the PS3 community, don't fall for it.

Also, GEC, again?? Get f***ing over it..

EDIT:

Also,
if this is "finally breaking the silence " on "that" Killzone 2 trailer, what do you call this video??

http://ve3d.ign.com/videos/...

Once again CVG fails completely.

TotalPS3Fanboy5083d ago (Edited 5083d ago )

The other truth is, the game ended up looking like that CGI.

For PS3 gamers, these truths are awesome.
For 360 gamers, these truths hurt.

Whoa .. . didn't know about that comparison ...
didn't really care .. I had picked up kz2 and enjoyed it thoroughly .... but there's an obvious difference in the level of effort put in the 2007 vid and the original vid.

kunit22c5083d ago

just like that first natal trailer was fake, except they probably wont deliver like Sony did...

HolyOrangeCows5083d ago

It ended up looking almost the same (if not better), so....who cares?

Rhythmattic5082d ago (Edited 5082d ago )

I Agree Chubear.

K2 and the Sum of its parts outdoes the 2005 Trailer.

If you actually disagree, you've not played the game, little lone in Surround/HD.

Kleptic5083d ago

its by far the biggest media f' up this generation...yet the media still claims it was all Sony and GG...after Sony, particularly Phil Harrison, set the record straight...it was too late for the media, and the fanboys, to look back...

In 2005's E3 Sony showed target renders of several upcoming games...namely Motorstorm and Killzone 2 being the show stoppers...the media went absolutely crazy wondering if it was actually in game or not, or if gameplay would be even close if it was actually pre-rendered...Sony did show early resistance fom footage also, that was clearly in game, but way off the mark of the renders being shown earlier...the media was told though that Resistance was very very early in development (twisting the fact that it was MUCH farther along than both motorstorm and killzone 2 though)...the problem started at an interview on the show floor from Geoff Keighley talking to Jack Tretton, where keighley rail roads it into 'is this acutal gameplay footage you are showing?'...referring to a monitor behind them re-capping the renders from the presentation...Tretton replied "yes"...and it was all over...

Harrison later clarified it though, stating Tretton was referring to resistance, which was part of that re-cap vid too...but too little too late...

so it got worse when Motorstorm was playable in demo form a year later...no where near the target render...it was a great looking game, and still is, but couldn't come close to the crazy carnage of the target render...and interestingly killzone 2 was completely absent from E3 2006 entirely...so the media did what it does best...assumes the worst...rumors started that killzone 2 had been cancelled, that it was completely broken, and that it was just smoke and mirrors from the beginning to monger hype for the PS3, a system that was clearly going to under achieve...

all the while GG worked quietly in the background...expanding from a team of 50 around the release of Liberation for the PSP, to nearly 175 when killzone 2 development went into full swing...not to mention sat on a development budget north of 50 million dollars, making it the single most expensive entertainment endeavor in Dutch history...

what matters now is what the game looked like when it released...and you are a blatant idiot if you say its not close to the target render...the original pre-rendered video did 2 things better than the actual game...one was facial animation with overall character model effects...hair, eyes, facial muscles, etc. where all better in that video, but killzone 2 still managed to raise the bar in this area when it released...the other was smoke effects, particularly the amount of dimensional depth to the trail from the burning intruder shot down early in the video...

and thats it...the gun model in the actual game is undeniably better and more detailed than the M82G in the target render...the lighting in the actual game is better than the target render, with better use of HDR, better muzzle flaring creating real dynamic shadows, and even the character model lighting with glistening bloom around metal clips, and how it flattens out over leather bandoleers, etc...the weather/sky processing is more impressive...the texture modeling for the ground is better...and the mo-capped hit response animation of enemies taking fire is undeniably unmatched by any video game ever created even a full year after its release...

those who have played it understand what a technical show case it is...if you still try to sit around and say Sony/GG didn't live up to the original target...you are dead wrong...the issue is that Sony didn't always do that...many other titles fell flat when compared to their original 'vision' of E3 2005...but killzone 2 did, by all means, impress the masses...

Socrates5083d ago

Anybody that thinks the final game looks as good as that CGI trailer are clearly blind and/or radical fanboys that can't admit the truth.

Also, Sony lied about the trailer and then tried to act like it was all a big misunderstanding. It's like what recently happened with the senatorial candidate, Richard Blumenthal, who claimed he "served in Vietnam" (which was a lie) then he later tried to brush it off by saying he misspoke.

Well, that is exactly the tactic that Sony used and you guys ate it up because you are such fanboys and it's what you want to believe.

IHateYouFanboys5083d ago

@Socrates: completely agree, and you are correct.

the final version of Killzone 2 looks good and all, but NOTHING in it looks as good as or better than that 'target render' (which btw they only called it a target render after theyd been caught out telling porkies).

they did say it was in-game, then after many sites did in-depth analysis' of it and experts all agreed it was fake, then and only then did sony come out and say 'lol sorry guys it was all a misunderstanding. i was talking about resistance while you were asking about Killzone 2 and we were watching the killzone 2 trailer'.

WengYong5082d ago

Sorry, you are both wrong. The final game was far better than the 2005 video. That being said it should look better, it was released 4 years after the video.

Killzone 2, still the best looking FPS on consoles

I really hate most game adverts on TV now.
'Not ingame footage', well, what's the damn point of not showing ingame footage to sell the game? Cinema trailers don't do that, why would games?

I have to admit, when it comes down to it a lot of the time, these 'Not ingame footage' usually have '360' at the end.

STK0265083d ago

If I remember correctly, much of the outrage was due to sony refusing to admit the trailer was CG. But I could be wrong.

Anyway, the final product, while not as sharp (in the comparisons that were made at the time of the release, you could see the game had slightly more blurry textures among other things), proved to be a much better looking one, thanks to awesome lighting and an improved artistic direction.

raztad5083d ago

And you know what? it's clear KZ3 is getting a much improved texture work and a lot sharper image due to better AA and no quincux blurriness.

BTW, I do remember Sony refusing to clarify if trailer was prerendered or real time. I guess they did it to increase the hype.

Kleptic5083d ago

Jack Tretton said everything from E3 2005 was in game...Phil Harrison later said that wasn't true, that Resistance fom was the only title to be shown 'running on actual PS3 hardware' or something along those lines...so Phil didn't directly say it was pre-rendered...leaving everyone to fight each other about it possibly running on a PC with similar specs to the PS3...but that started another war, because the PS3 was supposed to be way ahead of any PC at the time (in 2005 it definitely was)...

it was just all around bad PR...but not any different than what any other company did at the time...its very true though that Sony was extremely arrogant at the time...they punished everyone at that E3...but where kindly handed their hat a year later, when they couldn't show anything close to the target renders...MS got GTAIV day and date...and they also broke the news of the system being $500 for the 'cheap' sku...

where the media failed is that none of them ever gave a 'lets wait and see' approach to killzone 2...when it wasn't at E3 2006, headlines everywhere were that the game was canned...rumors started that it was shown behind closed doors and it 'looked worse than FEAR' in playable form...they showed it to a small audience under complete embargo at GDC 2007, and things slowly started to come around for some sites...but even up to the games release, many media outlets were looking for cards to pull to keep their foot on kz2's throat...

PirateThom5082d ago

There was an interview with Jack Tretton after that E3 and he mentioned Ted and that the trailer was real time. This is something people blantantly forget when talking about "OMFG KILLZONE 2 CGI!!!11". As far as I'm aware, Ted Price is CEO of Insomniac, so it's obvious he couldn't possibly have been talking about Resistance and was tired after press nonsense the entire day.

The haters got Killzoned reguardless though.

saint_john_paul_ii5083d ago

one thing that got me the most was the fire in the CGI trailer, when the soldiers caught on fire, my Jaw dropped.

I have to say, they got pretty close in the game when it came to that. Hopefully they improve on that.

bloodybutcher5083d ago

i don't know, i think i wasn't even close...my jaw dropped as well when i saw this soldier turning into crispy toast but in-game fire looked nothing like it...

orange-skittle5083d ago

How have they kept their promise? We haven't seen a game yet to compare to that prerendered video. I don't expect an honest answer from someone named HelGhan666 on the current topic either.

Sure, KZ2 looked great but suffered in many areas which they addressed will be corrected in KZ3. Until we see those corrections, i am not sold

finally breaks the silence ? knew about this 3 years ago or more

AAACE55083d ago (Edited 5083d ago )

I'm glad that all of you seem to be cool with this, especially when most of you were bashing MS about thier videos of upcoming games! It's funny how people can bash another company for something, but not the one they like.

How can you say they kept their promise? Neither company kept their promises. What about Nintendo and that wonderful Zelda video they released before the Wii came out, saying the next one will look like that on the Wii? What about MS and their IPTV and several other things that never came out? What about Sony and their 4D gaming crap and other features like being able to split your screen and play games on one side while doing something else on the other, and several other things they promised?

I understand that at least 50% of the stuff these companies claim is BS and it is just filler crap they feed us until the real treats are ready! The only people who believe all of it is fanboys!

Alot of these videos they show us aren't possible in the final game due to the fact that the consoles lack enough RAM. The processors are great, but the RAM prevents them from accomplishing these task. If the Ps3 and 360 both had at least 1 Gb or RAM, they could possibly reach the in game quality of the videos.

corneliuscrust5083d ago

to turn a blind eye to these things. Especially here.

waterboy5083d ago

the trailer is possible on ps3 and better than that trailer, 9 gigs of ram wont get you that trailer, but ps3s architecture will

Kleptic5083d ago (Edited 5083d ago )

on a side note...Sony did do what they said they would with '4D gaming'...the problem was not sony saying that...it was that most people don't understand what exactly that even refers to...Killzone 2 used procedural texture rendering for blood stains in game...in real time...Uncharted was the first game I know of, of any kind, to do it real time also...for drake's pants when getting out of water...more recent games to include it are heavy rain and god of war III...

its simply that '4D gaming' is actually misleading...as in 3D gaming had been around for around a decade at that point (3D as in 3d geometry of levels, not 3d HDTV stuff coming soon)...and 4D referred to things being processed with the inclusion of time isn't quite the same jump forward for the industry...but it sounds like it is...so drakes clothes would dry off after a certain amount of 'time' right before your eyes...a dead helghast's blood would turn slightly yellow as it appeared to dry...you could watch it happen, not leave the area and come back, which is normally how things like that had to be processed...

its a much more subtle effect than what a headline '4D gaming NOWzZZZ' would make you believe...but it is very calc heavy, which is where the PS3's Cell can sing...so the processor in the PS3 is actually a lot better at these types of effects than others, especially when the system released...why I am rambling on about this is beyond me...

CGI movie quality in all areas

Socrates5083d ago

Come on, guys, get real. The trailer had much better graphical fidelity than the game.

Not only that, but some of you are forgetting why it became an issue. And that is the fact that Sony tried to pass it off as actual in-engine graphics, when it was completely pre-rendered CGI.

The game's graphics did not live up to the trailer, period.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

Top 20 Best PlayStation 3 Games (20-11)

Alex DS. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "Is the PlayStation 3 retro? This is a surprisingly hard question to answer as the system definitely has the age to be considered retro, having launched in 2006, over 15 years ago now. But with it being home to so many massive games, many of which still hold up today and in fact were released for the PlayStation 4 when that console was released, make the PS3 a retro console that doesn’t feel retro."

shinoff2183722d ago

No ps3 is not retro. I dont even consider ps2 era retro. All imo.

shinoff2183722d ago

Typically, the term retro is given to items which are at least 20 years old (but not yet 40 years old).

Quick google search

badz149722d ago

No the PS3 is not yet a retro console. But if you're gonna put 1 game from a series in this list, then LBP2 should be there instead of the original, Motorstorm PR is also an overall better game than the 1st game and to put Tools of Destruction over A Crack in Time is a blasphemy when ACiT is the best game in the series.
