Australia Wants to Peek at Your Porn, Will Search Laptops if Necessary

Traveling to Australia this summer? If so, be prepared to have your laptops and mobile phones searched for pornography, a spokeswoman for the Australian sex industry says.

According to Fiona Patten, president of the Australian Sex Party, a new question now appears on Incoming Passenger Cards asking people if they're toting around "pornography." But that isn't all - apparently Australian officials have the right to examine your electronic gadgets for illicit material.

"Is it fair that customs officers rummage through someone's luggage and pull out a legal men's magazine or a lesbian journal in front of their children or their mother-in-law?" Patten said. "If you and your partner have filmed or photographed yourselves making love in an exotic destination or even taking a bath, you will have to answer 'Yes' to the question or you will be breaking the law."

"Do you have any weapons, knives, toxic materials, illegal pornographic material...?"

"...what???"

Just another stupid thing that happens down here in prude town.

This will surely slowdown flights, also what if you are carrying sensitive information? they can just go ahead and look at it? full of shit.

It is impossible to stop people bringing in digital pornography, i can't see this lasting long, just another idiotic way to waste money.

Glad I don't live in Aussie-Land. I'll just have to remember to never take a laptop if I ever go there.
Which I'm not planning on doing any time soon.

If this sort of law were passed in The United States, the sh!t would hit the fan. Your luggage and carry-on can be searched w/o reason, however laptops and such items can't. All they can do is ask you to turn it on, making sure it's not going to go boom.

But, at the same time... don't have anything to hide and you have nothing to worry about.

I can think of a billion ways to hide data on a laptop in such a way that they would never find it unless they're willing to spend countless man-hours combing through each and every hidden encrypted byte... and I'm by no means an expert. Of course, going through all that trouble isn't even necessary since there's this thing called the Internet, in case they haven't heard about it.

All this will do is slow down things and annoy law abiding citizens/tourists. Waste of resources and tax payer money. The guy smuggling child pornography will still get through unless he is stupid beyond belief or is completely unaware of this, in which case he shouldn't be smuggling to begin with.
