ShockCast Episode 15 - Tits for Hits? Grow Up!

Joel Taveras of DualShockers writes, "This weeks episode is a must listen, as the DualShockers crew with the help of GamingAngels.com’s own Stephanie Summers discus a major problem plaguing gaming journalism. It’s something you see on bigger sites like IGN with their “babes” section and even on sites like Kotaku (until someone finally had the nerve to speak up about it). Even on N4G, there are sites submitting their “Hot Cosplay Girl of the Week” posts. But where did it all start and what does it say about those sites, or better yet, what does it say about the readers that promote and endorse it? We also touch base on the week in news with topics such as: Kingdom Hearts – Birth By Sleep release date announced (September 7) along with a PSP bundle, no more celebrity models in Guitar Hero, StarCraft II beta ends at the end of the month just to name a few. Make sure to tune in as this week’s show just might make you rethink those NSFW cosplay pics you see everywhere these days."

In before the Dualshockers crew starts spamming their own podcast.

And oh look, they complain about N4G AGAIN.

God, are they obsessed? Do they stalk Columbo, Cat and Odion 24/7? -__-

@Hitman: That's right. It's called credibility.

It's a measure I use to judge you guys off of. Your past actions and practices all go towards this measure, and decide whether or not people take your word for something, give you the benefit of doubt or distrust you altogether.

I, for one, distrust you guys completely. The original pic you posted was in contrast to the content of the podcast itself. You guys were literally denouncing the practice of provocative photos for stories while posting one for your own. That smells like hypocrisy to me.

Above all, rememeber that word 'credibility'. It's what you guys don't have, and it's something I as a contributor seek to warn people about. So get off your condescending, high horse and put out some real news and interesting opinions rather than the same reactionary, controversial material you're notorious for.

@JoelT:

You should build your own credibility before telling me what I should and should not listen to. It's also an old topic that I've seen better handled by more seasoned and intelligent writers than yourselves. You guys simply use it as another stick to beat on and whine about N4G with.

Games4M - Rob5086d ago

Jeez, get off your little soapbox man.

If you have an issue with the actual content of the podcast then fair enough - make your point, but all it sounds like your doing is having a screamy waa waa at dualshockers.

I get it, you dont like Dualshockers - get a grip and move on.

Nike5086d ago (Edited 5086d ago )

Okay. Here's my actual issue with the podcast.

These guys are against tits for hits, right?

http://dualshockers.com/201...

http://dualshockers.com/200...

"Some would call these shots NSFW, but seriously, digital boobs have never hurt anyone."

Good day, hypocrites.

@Chadness: I've heard the same justifications and bitchings in fewer words many times over and in fewer words.

Go earn some cred and maybe next time I (and a good number of other users on this site) will actually give a damn for what you have to say. Because no matter what arguements you make, you'll still be the guys who spam their news stories with comments to get them to front page and complain about N4G, in some department, to some degree, every week.

Chadness5086d ago

@Nike: Those were legitimate posts covering something in the game industry. Screens from a mainstream game, seriously? Why would we NOT post those, we post all screens that a developer sends us for legitimate titles. And the Heavy Rain glitch was a legitimate topic and/or concern in a game that started off having any number of glitches. I can't remember if we mentioned in the podcast or not (you probably wouldn't know because you didn't listen to it), but there are legitimate uses of those screens and images.

But, when you talk about something completely unrelated to the image, which is there for the sole reason to drive in hits, then that is a problem. If I talk about Princess Peach in SMG2, for example, and lead it off with a shot of someone cosplaying that character that is scantily clad, it has nothing to do with screens of the Princess in SMG2 (that is a theoretical situation that I just made up to make my point, don't cry) and has everything to do with "oh hey come here we have boobs!".

Posting images (especially those above the "break" in a post) that exist solely to get hits, without any substance behind them, is the point. A cosplay girl of the week (note, not cosplay picture, as nearly all of these types of posts include ONLY scantily clad female cosplayers), without any other substance in the post besides, "Hey, have some boobs this week, and oh, they're dressed up like Chun Li!" is what we're talking about. Thus, "tits for hits". Legitimate topics don't fall under that category.

Oh, but you didn't listen to the podcast so you wouldn't know that. Hmm.

-Alpha5086d ago (Edited 5086d ago )

"Because no matter what arguements you make, you'll still be the guys who spam their news stories with comments to get them to front page and complain about N4G"

Pretty much what every independent site does anyway here on N4G. Create stories for hits and try to get conversations going to engage other users. Thing is, by complaining about it, you are only contributing to the guys you dislike. Lose/Lose, eh Nike? ;)

Anyways, I don't particularly care about "tits for hits" provided the people don't do it constantly and solely rely on shocker titles for hits. There are many low attempts at hits, but they are done anyway, people still check 'em out and credibility only seems to be hurt when it's done constantly. I suppose it depends on the content. A "tit" title in the right context doesn't have to be a low-attempt at hits. As for Cosplay, I don't know what it is exactly but it does make N4G look less credible when it gets the highest hits (I assume "Cosplay Girls" are porn links or something like that?) Thing is, I can't really justify telling people what to read and click. Just my 2 cents

ThatCanadianGuy5086d ago

+Bubbles to Nike

In a few paragraphs he utterly destroyed the whole dualshocker cast.

taz80805086d ago

Actually he did not. He just sounded angry and like an adamant hater of the site. Haters have their place in the world and that is fine.

No one is destroyed by a singular comment in a discussion and if you believe that then you have a very weak perception of destruction.

I also find this all entertaining as no one is actually talking about what was said on the podcast or the content. This devolved into an attack on a site or person. If you have a problem with the content presented then by all means have at it and site why you think that it was undesirable, but why turn this into an insult thread.

iiprotocolii5086d ago

Thank you, sir.

@Nike

I would usually stoop myself to your level and bash you for being such a hater, because it is what, eventually, gives our story degrees. But rather than sit here and insult you until your nose bleeds, I would rather break a couple of things down for you.

Credibility? Sir, in less than a year, we have established ourselves amongst major blogs/sites/publications and get that very respect. We don't need a troll who dangles from our pubes to tell us that we aren't credible. We have loyal followers and listeners, one person crying about how we don't cater to their ideals specifically isn't going to bother us one bit. Your opinion isn't that we aren't credible. Millions of readers and listeners feel otherwise. A couple of million compared to a handful of people. Hmm.[Weighs it in a scale] Oh look, the millions of people win.

You want to talk hypocrisy? How about a man/boy/animal who *doesn't* like DualShockers yet continues to give them his absolute attention? Kind of defeats the purpose, no? You perpetuate your whining voice at how awful we are, yet you're constantly checking our stuff out. At this juncture you just made your very own "contributor credibility" fall 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.

To me, Nike, you sound more like a whiny child like the rest of the trolls here on N4G (pennywise ring a bell?). You consistently persist to troll our stories and *try* to badmouth our name because we're doing something we love while you sit in front of your computer biting a pillow at how angry you are with... well, us. I'm not angry with you, not one bit. In fact, I am entertained by your failed attempts at trying to discredit us by slandering our name. It feels great having haters. It lets us know that even haters constantly check us out.

That said, Nike, I think I just walked all over you. Pun intended.

ThatCanadianGuy5086d ago

" Millions of readers and listeners feel otherwise. A couple of million compared to a handful of people. Hmm.[Weighs it in a scale] Oh look, the millions of people win. "

Millions of people? Oh really? Why is it then, that 90% of the content on your site has less than 200 views and 0 comments? Because nobody cares.

http://www.sitemeter.com/?a...
Millions eh? LOL!

For all the moaning and crying you guys do about N4G you would be nothing without it.

I noticed this at the bottom of the site.
"Friends: Pixel Enemy | HipHopGamerShow | Christopher Tin | RawGamePlay | SFX-360 |
The Bit Bag | Analog Hype | ClassyGamer"

The league of extraordinary bloggers LOL!

iiprotocolii5086d ago (Edited 5086d ago )

@ThatCanadianguy420

LoL. Ok, my bad. A couple of hundred thousand. ;)

With regards to N4G, like I have regurgitated millions of times on this site and our very own, it's not that we don't LIKE N4G because we do. In theory, it is amazing. In practice, no. We don't say "we hate N4G." We complain about things that make the experience egregious.

"The league of extraordinary bloggers LOL!"

We don't put IGN there because they're famous and because they're uber cool or whatever else people think of them. Those people are our friends and bust their butts just as hard as we do out of pocket to bring the community content because they too are dedicated. It's kind of like Canada in the United Nations. Nobody likes them and no one cares about them, yet they exist because they want to. Hm... I think I'll write that down.

dardinkay5086d ago

Your last statement puts you to shame, making fun of Canadians...

Nike5086d ago

"I would usually stoop myself to your level"

Try stepping up.

"And bash you for being such a hater, because it is what, eventually, gives our story degrees."

(Looks at degrees and time story has been on front page) ...Ooookay.

"But rather than sit here and insult you until your nose bleeds"

No hints on what he's about to do next.

"I would rather break a couple of things down for you."

Oh yay.

"Credibility? Sir, in less than a year, we have established ourselves amongst major blogs/sites/publications and get that very respect."

Your traffic ranking and average 200 views per story (thanks ThatCanadianGuy420) suggest otherwise.

"We don't need a troll who dangles from our pubes to tell us that we aren't credible."

Translation: They’re still in the growing phase and hurt if you pull on them.

"We have loyal followers and listeners, one person crying about how we don't cater to their ideals specifically isn't going to bother us one bit."

Just one? Looking at this thread, I see 7 including myself who discredit you. Keep disregarding one person at any given moment and it just adds up.

"Your opinion isn't that we aren't credible. Millions of readers and listeners feel otherwise. A couple of million compared to a handful of people. Hmm.[Weighs it in a scale] Oh look, the millions of people win."

Okay, I think he's hallucinating now.

"You want to talk hypocrisy? How about a man/boy/animal who *doesn't* like DualShockers yet continues to give them his absolute attention?"

In other news: I just got back from nap every one. It was a fine nap and...oh, you're still talking protocol?

"Kind of defeats the purpose, no? You perpetuate your whining voice at how awful we are, yet you're constantly checking our stuff out."

Indeed. The sacrifices I make so other people don't have to know how awful you are.

"At this juncture you just made your very own "contributor credibility" fall 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup."

Annnnd, that just makes no sense.

"To me, Nike, you sound more like a whiny child like the rest of the trolls here on N4G"

Oh, I'd be careful with your words. The real trolls lurk deeper - they just haven't deemed you worthy of their attention (yet).

"You consistently persist to troll our stories and *try* to badmouth our name because we're doing something we love while you sit in front of your computer biting a pillow at how angry you are with... well, us."

It IS a yummy pillow. :)

"I'm not angry with you"

(Incredulous look) So, you've been flirting with me these past few lines?

"In fact, I am entertained by your failed attempts at trying to discredit us by slandering our name."

You guys discredited yourselves the second you all showed up just to click 'disagree' on my comments.

"It feels great having haters. It lets us know that even haters constantly check us out."

Again, sacrifices. Sigh.

"That said, Nike, I think I just walked all over you. Pun intended."

Ah, a child who knows not of the mythological significance of Nike.

Well, this was fun. (Goes back to watching Fist of Legend)

tordavis5086d ago

Wow, iiprotocolii has SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT!

iiprotocolii5085d ago

[Chews popcorn] So, in other words, after reading that "lengthy-response," all I got from you was that you're neither as witty or as intelligent as you try to be. Your "response" only confirms how bad I made you look. LOL Taking quotes and responding in single lines - that's an old tactic people who don't know what to say do. Thanks for the great laugh, dude. You have proven how ludicrously pathetic you are.

Oh, and if you're fond of being named after the mythological Greek GODDESS of victory, then hey, that's great. Either way, your name is simply too easy of a target on any occasion. But as far as your name goes, I doubt your name is victorious here.

Exactly...EXACTLY. The trolls on this site are extremely sensitive. Same thg happens in Gabe Newell articles. The PS3 fans ,especially, attack Valve is if they kidnapped their first born child LOL.

Solution: If you don't like Dualshockers...stop commenting on their articles..pretty simple if ya ask me.

taz80805086d ago

it seems that you have quite an obsession with credibility for some reason. What exactly makes you credible? The fact that your tag refers to a line of shoes?!

You took one line out of an hour long podcast and made it a broad statement. Did you listen to the whole thing?

Your reply to JoelT just makes you sound angry. He mad e simple statement and you jumped all over him for it.

Also your examples of hypocrisy are ludicrous. Those were legitimate news. Our issue is not with reporting about nudity but more those that use it as a means to create hits for themselves, there is a big difference.

Seriously, you guys were terrible in the past, you're terrible now and I have no reason to believe that you guys will ever write anything that isn't putrid fecal matter in the future. FYI --all your articles were filtered from the old N4G for a reason.

$15 horse for WoW made more money than StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Jason Hall, currently an indie developer and former Blizzard employee, has been sharing some really interesting stories from his long career in the industry for a while now. Some of them are truly insightful, while others may seem depressing.

I’m a little shocked that StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty sold only around 6 million copies. The original StarCraft did over 11 million. Maybe Blizzard was too leisurely in releasing StarCraft 2? Starcraft 2 came out 12 years after it’s predecessor.

Plague-Doctor27159d ago (Edited 159d ago )

Im surprised too. Starcraft was still a huge name in 2010. It was kinda the only new RTS around and other genres like MOBAs hadn't really kicked off yet. I do remember at the time sentiment around the game was
pretty angry the game was being split into 3 but I doubt that would have impacted sales to that degree

Sciurus_vulgaris159d ago

For a long time I believed StarCraft II sold on par or better than its predecessor. There was so much hype for the game. Plus it had a pretty strong E-Sports scene for a few years.

Myself and half a dozen friends all bought StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and played it religiously for a full year. While I bought the expansions, most of my friends did not. RPGs seem to be a generally low selling genre.

Nerdmaster159d ago

I'm not shocked at all. This was an early example of Blizzard being greedy. Instead of releasing a complete experience, splitting Starcraft 2 in 3 parts so it could make us purchase it 3 times if we wanted to know the whole story and play story mode with the other races.

Sciurus_vulgaris159d ago

I originally had that stance. However, Wings of Liberty, was just as long, if not longer than StarCraft 1. The expansions were of decent length too and added a good amount of additional content.

il-JumperMT160d ago

and people wonder why we are having mtx in everything. i blame the people who actual buy them.

Nerdmaster159d ago

It's interesting he used Brazil as an example of the importance of regional pricing. Nowadays many companies on Steam are setting their prices in Brazil as high as, if not more than, their price in USA. I simply refused to buy a few games when I noticed that's the case.

Don't really agree on Dead Space being number one. But usually come down to preference. Alot of good games on the list. I was hoping to see Aliens vs Predator by Sierra on the list, as it was a great game. Anyways for me the number one is still Halo but Mass Effect was really good up to the infamous ending of the third game.

Rebel_Scum1140d ago

I would put Flashback on my list. Its got such a great tone and background design. The cutscenes were pretty good too.

1140d ago
Master of Unlocking1139d ago (Edited 1139d ago )

DEAD SPACE 2 as number 1? Really? I've only ever played DEAD SPACE 1 (without finishing it) and, sure enough I liked it a lot, and have been yearning for getting to grips with an hd remastered trilogy for the PS4/XBox One/PS5/XBox Series X/S, but what about Deus Ex Human Revolution & Mankind Divided? Alienation (to quench our thirst for twitching fingers' top-down dual-stick shooters)? Or even Cyberpunk 2077 (once the game has been re-released and all the kinks have been ironed out)?

If not at the #1 spot, it seems to me these games deserved to be on the list somewhere.

But what really strikes me as unfair is, if you're going back to the PS3/XBox 360 era with DS2, how could you forget to mention Killzone 2 & 3? The Resistance games? When it comes to Sci-Fi FPS, it's inadequate not to pay your respects to those stellar franchises! Heck, even the Crysis trilogy should've been there IMHO.
