Red Dead Redemption Sells 550,000 Copies on Day One

Following news of over 450,000 pre-orders earlier in the week, preliminary data is in and Read Dead Redemption sold around 550,000 units on day one in the Americas. Many analysts had been conservative in their predictions for the game, Michael Pachter in particular stating that he was sceptical as to whether a western game could ever sell as well as Rockstar were hoping.

And so review scores really does matter. Rockstar does it again. Another great IP is born.

If you're with me say Hooah!

poindat2707d ago (Edited 2707d ago )

Bro, the IP was born a little over 6 years ago, and the original was certainly a worthy game...

But still, what an outstanding psuedo-sequel! I'm picking up my copy tomorrow afternoon and can't wait until I am able to sit down for my first long gaming marathon in a while.

Red Dead Revolver:

I'd rather stick with movement here and think of this as a brand new IP and forget Red Dead Revolver ever happened.

And yes Great review scores probably helped move 100k of those units and will help keep the sales strong throughout the summer.

poindat: I did not have a good time with that game. And just becuase this game bares the "Red Dead" name doesn't mean R* wouldn't have made a western game without it.

poindat2707d ago (Edited 2707d ago )

It was a good game, at its core. One of the first really substantial westerns I had played.

And you would not be enjoying Red Dead Redemption right now had Revolver not come into existence. Don't take what you have for granted and try to forget the past.

Sure, Redemption doesn't bear much similarities to Revolver, but you have to give credit where credit is due, for sure.

Darkfocus2707d ago

redemption's more similar to G.U.N IMO than revolver even though revolver is the same franchise

The same bugs, that were in their last release.

Rockstar does it again!

RedDevils2706d ago

all I know is you can't swim in the game, or you can't use the assassin outfit (the one where you get with the code) I only have trouble getting it lol

dirthurts2707d ago

The Red Dead series has already been around. This is not the first title.

deadreckoning6662707d ago (Edited 2707d ago )

Agree with Movement all the way. I hope u people aren't gullible enough to believe that half a million people remembered Red Dead Revolver. If anything, this just shows how important ANOTHER persons opinion is to gamers.

Personally, I do remember Red Dead Revolver...but I didn't buy it nor did I even consider it. Of all the gaming generations I've lived through, this generation is influenced by reviews and ignorance the most.

With gamers praising Metacritic, people who get emotional over which console is better, and an overdependence on whats popular and whats reviewed well...this generation takes the cake as far the worst generation of gaming as far as gaming culture is concerned.

Srry, got a little carried away lol. Just wanted ta get my opinion out there.

raptorjacob2707d ago

@ dead
i think the game sold over a million so more than half a million do remember red dead revolver.

My preorder copy shipped today! It's still in Delaware, though... :(

RememberThe3572707d ago

Thats why I don't buy games online unless I get a great deal, I hate the wait.

Claudinho692707d ago

why they had predictions like its the first red dead game?........

poindat2707d ago (Edited 2707d ago )

Indeed. The original game has sold over 1.5 million copies, so I don't understand why anyone would think that an open-world, big budget, sequel with mass appeal would do poorly.

It also amazes me how some deride Red Dead Revolver or entirely ignore its existence. Revolver was, in my opinion, an amazing game that should be experienced by those looking for additional western gameplay. Revolver and Redemption may bear almost no similarities besides setting and branding, but both excel in their own ways.

I suppose this same sort of phenomenon occurred within the Killzone series, between the first game and the sequel.

Gamers just need to reflect more on industry history that has lead to the great games that we are enjoying now. Or developers need to release anthology packs. Either way, nobody should let history wither away into nothingness, especially when that history is substantial.

deadreckoning6662707d ago

Well, personally I didn't thk it would do poorly, but I didn't thk it would do amazing either with it being a Western and all.

swiftshot932707d ago

No doubt, Rockstar has done it again. Such an amazing studio, I got the game today and I was reminded how they are just unlike anyone else. Attention to detail=Rockstar.

RememberThe3572707d ago

Assassin's Creed 2 did the same thing, and the game just drew me in and wouldn't let me go. I can't wait to get to this game but I still have to finish FF13 and 3D Dot Heors, and I got to stay up on my MAG action, as well. So much gaming! I wish I could do it all day!

pimpmaster2707d ago

good thing it sold well, cause this game was defenetly rushed by looking at the SH1TLOAD of glitches it has.

WIIIS12706d ago

The inferior graphics on PS3 doesn't count as a glitch actually.

Veneno2706d ago

What about sub HD Alan Wake? is that a glitch?
