In-depth Review: Alan Wake - Electronic Theatre

Things don’t start of too well, with Alan Wake’s opening chapter somehow managing to be a confusing mess of rigid, stereotypical character development, near unintelligible plot strands and slowly walking along narrow linear paths. Most of the decisions behind the lukewarm introduction become apparent at later stages, and even more so on a second playthrough, but it’s a shame that this preamble will set the scene for many as a game more concerned with creating sprawling landscapes than filling them with activity, and it’s not til a few chapters later that Alan Wake opens truly, and begins to start showing more than a deftly crafted horror premise and a few neat camera tricks.

Lukewarm introduction? I thought it was completely awesome.

The trembling house in the beginning with the voices saying "die die die" almost made me shart a little.

People say it'd be linear but it sure as hell doesn't feel linear when you play it. There are lots of different paths to explore, tons of hidden story content to be found, and the driving parts feel more open world than any other horror game I've ever played.

Bashing it for being linear is out of place. Dead Space, Silent Hill & Resident Evil are much much more linear than Alan Wake but get a free pass.

If you take Alan Wake for what it is you get one of the best, and one of the few, horror games that don't need blood and gore to make you want to turn the lights on.

However, if you instead choose to focus all of your attention on the fact that it's been in development for a long time and was once said to be open world you might end up writing a review like the one above.

While Alan wake is a brilliant game and anything under 8 is completely unfair IMO, lets not kid ourselves, it is a completely linear game with a bit of exploration.

Did you even read the review? It barely mentions the originally intended free roaming or it's length of time in development. It's more concerned with the delivery of the story...

I love it; but a word of recommendation.

Play on HARD and collect all the crap (so you run off into the woods alot more; and see a ton more)
