Sony Shipping New PlayStation 3 Hardware

A Sony spokesperson confirmed to IGN the company has now begun shipping new PlayStation 3 models to North America that include a 40nm RSX graphics chip.

The smaller chip allows the console to run cooler, consume less power, and, presumably, help Sony reduce manufacturing cost of the system. If you're on the lookout for the new unit, the model number is "CECH-2101A."

The story is too old to be commented.

Thought so. Now, we'll see more supply coming.

Joule2719d ago

$$$$$$$$$$$$$
They make profit = more money to spend on games. So we get better games!

RememberThe3572719d ago

But they have a lot of money that they need to make back. Your probably right though, they're expecting to sell 15 million units this next year so you know they're bring their big guns when it comes to software.

siyrobbo2719d ago

thats the point, even if they only save $1 per console, that equates to $15 million saved. imagine if they can save $10, that'd be a whole years worth of exclusives payed for off the bat

sikbeta2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

Exactly what I was thinking, this is the "slightly redesigned PS3" which will make Profit for Sony, this year we'll see GT5 + Bundles...

Luzce2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

$15M is nothing when they are talking about $0.5B loss for the 2nd year in a row, but it's a step in the right direction. I'm sure the new consoles are providing much larger savings than that.

DaTruth2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

Good thing I've been holding out for my new PS3! Been hard not gaming and all, but going back to work and having a 1yr old takes up almost all my time anyway! Glad it waited till the weekend before I went back to work to crap out on me, after 200 hours of Demon's Souls and 200 hours of FF13 I really can't blame it.

I'll buy a Slim now and get the 60gig repaired somewhere down the road and do all my hard gaming on my Slim and soft gaming and Bluray on my 60gig(bedroom TV)! I've heard once they go and get repaired, they are pretty vulnerable afterward

DeathMetal2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

lost 890 million last year they still have the best console but.. the numbers don't lie

gtamike1232718d ago

It's great the PS3 games have the best console graphics this Gen.

RageAgainstTheMShine2718d ago

Yeah unlike the other company who have billions of money but doesn't care to make any games.

ThanatosDMC2719d ago

Yep, now they need to churn up production and hit that 15M.

thereapersson2719d ago

Imagine the sales spike now that Sony will have the new models in stock! Sad though, that I *just* bought a new slim about a month ago. I wonder if my model has the new chip or if it's solely the next batch that Sony will be sending out. Like, did they trickle them out into the wild before getting an adequate supply?

Legosz2719d ago

Don't worry about it, it doesn't change anything but power consumption and it does by only a couple watts.

DrWan2719d ago

what they paid to acquire Media Molecule.

Microsoft Xbox 3602719d ago

Sony should release a PS3 tablet. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Genesis52719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

It changes one other thing besides the wattage. It lets Sony sell the system at a profit.

UltraNova2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

A silicone based microchip if reduced from 65nm to 40nm its new production cost equals proportionally to its size reduction. In other words the reduction is around 38.5%. If the RSX chip costs Sony around 60-80 dollars per console then we are talking savings from 35-45 dollars per console.

vhero2718d ago

This is why consoles dried up the last few months no doubt they were shipping out remainder of the old chips ready for the new ones to save on manufacturing costs. Hopefully there will now be plenty in stock so people can easily find one and nobody will have any excuses to why Sony PS3 didn't sell well that month.

gta28002717d ago

Finally!!! I've been looking around everywhere for a slim and have had no luck! I'm not exaggerating either. This is good to know though :)

Darkstorn2719d ago

It's about time Sony started profiting from each console sold...so they can drop the price again and surpass the 360 in sales! Do it, Sony!

LordMarius2719d ago

I dont think we will see a price drop for a while

Kratos Spartan2719d ago

The SOONEST I would expect another would be Holiday 2011. And that still may be too soon. $300 for the PS3 is just about perfect.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

Probably a drop $50, $250. But no more than that, is unfair from Sony. The technology cost more than $400.

The Blu ray alone cost $200. And with the Motherboard, GPU, CPU and other hardware technology, should cost more than $400.

That is why Sony is loosing money.

Because they are selling Hardware very cheap!! Fair for the customers, Unfair for Sony.

Probably will be a price drop for $250 but no more less than that.

spandexxking2719d ago

my friend used to use that as a positive for when he was trying to convince people to get a PS3.
he would say "the PS3 sells at a loss so you know youre getting a good deal!"

holdmedownma20082719d ago

IGN stated in this article that Sony will finally make a profit with these new systems sold. Are they making a profit now or not?

Luzce2719d ago

The entire company had about $500M loss for the past 2 years, but that is not due to the PS3. These modifications make the PS3 more profitable, possibly pushing the company out of the red.

DaTruth2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

The gaming division is profitable and is pulling up the rest of the company. If not for the gaming division, things would look a lot worse! They take a loss on the PS3 console but turn profit on games(more than they lose on the console).

Offtopic: People, prepare for the disagrees! With the new stingy bubble system, no one will waste bubbles on every stupid retort they think of, they will simply disagree.

So please, no more of this, "A disagree!!! Rooaaarrrr, man up and explain yourself!"

k jules2718d ago

you couldn't been more wrong. PS3 cost Sony about 5 Billion over it's life time (including development), the gaming division is one of the reasons why Sony stock has dropped over the last 5 years. Only thing keeping the company up is Sony music and Sony BMG, parts that always make tons of money. For comming fiscal year, things are looking better with Sony Ericsson finally posting black numbers and the reduced PS3 cost.

vhero2718d ago

I don't think a major price drop anytime soon but there might be something at E3 maybe a new bundle? They could in drop it a little though... Or make a PS3 special edition without no hard drive for users to put there own in for super cheap. Of course that would just be confusing to a lot of consumers but be great for anybody who knows what they are doing.

SKCShifty2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

lol..........nice.

UnSelf2719d ago

Competition: "Damnmit!!"

The_Zeitgeist2719d ago

Wait....Whoa whoa whoa.....I bought a PS3 Slim after my 40gig Fat Model bit the dust after two years. I thought the Slim was already supposed to run cooler. Good thing I bought that extra 3 year warranty through amazon.

Raf1k12719d ago

It does run cooler it's just that the latest batch has been improved to run even cooler.

The_Zeitgeist2719d ago

That is so lame. Why don't they figure this out before they release the darn thing!

Luzce2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

They went from a 45nm chip to a 40nm chip, which requires an even smaller heat sink (cost savings). Here's the article from engadget: http://www.engadget.com/201...

40nm is state-of-the-art in terms of semiconductor processing. For sure it was not ready 1-2 years ago when they were putting together the Slim. Now that it is, why not update it? Makes no difference to you...

kneon2719d ago

@The_Zeitgeist

It's not like the "VP of cool technical stuff" decides on a friday that monday they are switching to 40nm. It takes years to get the fabs running on a new process and then they need to work at getting the yields up to commercially viable levels. Believe me, they switch to a smaller process as soon as they can as it saves them money due to getting more chips per wafer. Plus there is the power saving bonus which saves money on the smaller power supply.

krouse932718d ago

The Cell CPU is made using a 45nm manufacturing process down from a 65nm and 90nm before that. The RSX GPU is made with a 40nm manufacturing process. Meaning that the smallest component on the GPU is 40 nanometers. So compared to the launch console which had a 90nm CPU and 90nm GPU the newest PS3 is cheaper just as powerful and runs more efficiently and cooler. With a 45nm CPU and 40nm GPU. When they shrink the Cell down to a 32nm manufacturing process we will see the release of the PS3 super slim.
