Games Sales Plummet 26% in April

The analysts seemed to think April would represent a fairly easy comparison year-over-year for the U.S. games industry. Apparently, it wasn't easy enough, as game sales fell off a cliff, according to the data IndustryGamers just received from The NPD Group

No PS2 data?
It's time for new hardwares (PSP2 especially).
FFXIII is already out of the chart and God of War 3 is doing pretty good.

FlipMode2652d ago

Very slow month, Sony needs to fix those shortages.

StanLee2652d ago

Incredibly slow month all around. The software sales are a bit more respectable I suppose.

socomnick2652d ago

There are no shortages :/

nnotdead2652d ago

im not sure if there are still shortages, but i do know for a fact that in my area there where PS3 shortages.

KillaManiac2652d ago

There is 100% definitely still shortages. At my Gamestop I have worked at for over 3 years now, we have around 6-12 white/black Wiis at one time, 15+ 360s (including FFXIII Bundles), and at MOST 3 PS3s.

The PS3s are coming only once every couple weeks. In my opinion that would be shortages (atleast in Arkansas).

Solotov2652d ago

True ...they need to fix the shortages of people wanting to buy the system.

oohWii2652d ago

GOW3 was a bit of a disapointment. I figured at least 300K. I wonder what is up with that?

it felt like a slow month for games.not much to shout about here.i expect things to be slow until the holiday season.

Spydiggity2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

sales are gonna be pretty huge this month starting this tuesday. rdr will probably sell a couple million. i expect alan wake will probably break 1 mil (although it could end up being a sleeper hit which means it'll take it a li'l while to build up momentum). mod nation will probably do 300-400k (they shoulda made it 39.99 and then i bet it would do over a mil). and mario will probably sell about a billion copies

i have a theory that april didn't go well cuz everyone is playing the starcraft 2 beta. :-P

badz1492652d ago

come on and be rational over here. Splinter Cell is a long running, huge franchise and it didn't break 1/2 a million even. so, how in hell would AW go straight to 1 mil? I don't think that's going to happen. RDR is going to be huge but 1 mil? we shall see as there hasn't been many games released in the middle of the year made it to 1 mil 1st month!

Spydiggity2652d ago

i said alan wake would probably get there over time, not right off the jump.

splinter cell was a huge franchise last gen, but their only title this gen before conviction was double agent which hurt the name a bit. conviction is a great game but probably doesn't get a lot of word of mouth (though i convinced 2 non sc fans to buy it), and there wasn't a lot of hype surrounding it until right before launch.

as for rdr, you don't think it'll break a mil? i bet it hits 3+ million total, and will probably break a million the first week alone. gamestop is doing a midnight launch for it and if that's in my tiny town, then imagine the preorders everywhere else.

Cold 20002652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

So...theres going to be "shortages" until the PS3 outsells the 360...?

That would be quite a "coincidence" dont you think.

@below: Oh you mean the "straight out of Sony Headquarters" reports! The ones that always pop out right after NPD ? Those ones, right ?
Well mark my words: the day the PS3 outsells the 360 funnily enough Sony will announce the end of the "shortages" that have been going on since January though they managed to ship 1.5 miilion in December alone in the USA.

FlipMode2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

Nah when reports say there aren't anymore shortages.

Haha, I was going to reply back but these guys below me did a pretty damn good job. Amazon, BestBuy and other retailers aren't trying to help Sony lie buy not selling PS3's.

Greywulf2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

I think any gap in NPD is always covered by 20-30k PS3 sales in japan. But.. Sony and microsoft don't consider worldwide sales...when combining their.. world..wide..sal.. wait..

http://www.amazon.com/PlayS...

"Temporarily out of stock.
Order now and we'll deliver when available. We'll e-mail you with an estimated delivery date as soon as we have more information. Your account will only be charged when we ship the item."

Guess Amazon is making that up aye cold? Sony and Major Retailers are conspiring to pwn fanboys on n4g?

This is what happens when you have to value your system not by its content, but by the #'s compared to Sony. You are here pretending theres no shortage.

Literally.

Sad.

btw. Media Create hardware sales (4/26 – 5/2)

PS3 – 32,874

There goes that lead.

Megaton2652d ago

Unlike Microsoft, when Sony claims shortages it's backed up by numerous major retail chains.

Cold 20002652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

http://www.gamestop.com/Bro...

The even have the GOW3 bundles. And its indicated NEW in grey in the top left hand corner.

And dont forget the huge majority of people buy the consoles in a STORE and not the net.

@below: Oh! So thats means EVERY household can get one at least. So I guess that means they actually arent out of stock if every household can get a PS3.
Moreover dont know about you but I dont know many people who buy 2 PS3's in a month.

@clownbelt: maybe YOU should read. Theres 3 pages, and whole lot of GOW bundles, some unavailable online (means only in the shop) and some are CLEARLY AVAILABLE. So if you want a PS3 for sure, all you have to do is go get it in the store.

FlipMode2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

But as you can see they all have this: "Limit 1 per household"

So obviously PS3's are low on stock.

Edit: Still doesn't change the fact that when you can only get one per household it means supplies are low, no real 2 ways about it.

soxfan20052652d ago

A quick check of Walmart & Best Buy show "in stock" as well.

The "shortage" excuse is getting really old.

"Numerous" chains? So, I guess Amazon alone qualifies as "numerous".

ClownBelt2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

You should read the link of what you posted. You just prove that there's a shortage of PS3. Lol

@Cold

No matter how much you twist it, it's clearly stated there that there's a limit of 1 PS3 per household. Sure you can buy other bundles, but the fact that they had to limit their supply is enough of a proof that there really is a shortage.

JokesOnYou2652d ago

What happened Grey, remember all the talk from sony folks saying how the 360 should be outselling the wii if it was a good HD console because the price point was closer and how once the ps3 price dropped it would outsell the 360 and wii even in the US every month? Yeah, reality hit. So you can talk about Japan sales, yes the 360 doesn't sell there but it beats ps3 regularly in the UK and we don't get reliable data consistently from any of the other regions to make a accurate overall comparison of month to month sales, so the rest its just guest work by sony loyalists acting if they know what the total sales are month to month...even ps3 fansites spin the numbers by qouting totals announced from both companies but are measured by different year ending fiscal reports.

Enough with the shortages propaganda, if Sony can't produce more than 180K units then there is no hope for them. Anyway, it's a slow month overall, next month's results will be interesting with all the big name releases.

It's a slow month. Percentage-wise, here is how much each one dropped from March to April:

360 - 54.8%
PS2 - unknown
PS3 - 57.7%
Wii - 49.7%
NDS - 62.9%
PSP - 54.6%

So, PSP saw the second smallest drop in percentage sold, actually. Not to say their sales are stellar, but this month's decline didn't change the market for it really since everything experienced a drop in sales.

Wonder why NPD Group is withholding on PS2 and #6-10 game sales numbers?

Probably more PR bullsh**

zeeshan2652d ago

socomnick: You sir are an idiot! I am Harrisburg, PA right now and the local bestbuy stores are TOTALLY out of PS3. The geek squad dude told me that they expect to see PS3 shipment in about 2 weeks. I know for a fact that most of the Walmarts and Bestbuys in Houston, TX are also running low or are out of stock when it comes to PS3. So better get your facts straight before you give us that "there is no shortage" crap.

PSP 65.5K
Xbox 360 185.4K

Nintendo DS 440.8K

GOD OF WAR III* PS3 SONY Mar-10 180.3K 5

socomnick2652d ago

God of war 3 went from over a million last month to 180k that is one huge drop.

I wonder if the overabundance of used copies had anything to do with the huge drop in GOD of War 3 sales.

Homicide2652d ago

LOL! Sackboy is crying over the weak GOW3 sales.
