Spawn Kill Book Review: Mass Effect Revelation

David "Snarkasaur" Stewart writes, "In the original Mass Effect game it was a player’s job as Commander Shepard to stop a Reaper invasion of the galactic government body known as the Citadel. Leading this invasion was the rogue Spectre agent Saren, who had uncovered an ancient Reaper mind-controlling ship and was using it to wreak havoc upon the galaxy. This ship, the Sovereign, succeeds or fails to destroy The Citadel’s ruling body, The Council, based on the player’s decisions. With Revelation, Drew Karpyshyn, lead writer for the game, gives us an origin story of sorts. It does not relay any information about Shepard or any of his crew (Shepard isn’t even in the book), but it does uncover something probably equally important. Revelation reveals how Saren came into possession of the Sovereign, or rather how the Sovereign came into possession of Saren." (Culture, Mass Effect) 7.5/10

The Dragon Age books are great -- I'm glad to hear that the Mass Effect ones are worth my time as well! I'm going to definitely be picking those up over the summer. n_n

It must be really weird to read a book based around video games. Comics make sense, but to me, books just seem an odd choice.

I disagree. Video games are a combined art encompassing every type of entertainment form. You actually have to basically write tons of book-like pages to give a game a decent story. Then there is architecture of game engine, sculpture/design of the 3d object modeling, music and sound, and of course everyone knows it takes tons of artists as well. This is just an example of how Video Games are all arts. And Video Games can debut in any art form they like because they are all arts at once fundamentally.
