GameSpot: Alan Wake Review

The clever storytelling ties in with the dreary atmosphere, building on the fear established from the very beginning with subtle use of lighting and a moody musical score. Unfortunately, the path you march down rarely offers any surprises, which makes your actions take on a by-rote feeling after a while. But the combat is so satisfying that it's largely able to overshadow this misstep. Alan Wake is a riveting adventure that will keep you glued to the screen until the very end.

Nicholas Cage2663d ago

this game has been getting mixed reviews though.

StanLee2663d ago

Most reviews have been consistent. 40 plus reviews and many are 80s and 90s. The biggest complaint is that the action can become mundane and the game borrows heavily from other mediums in the genre like books, films and television. The game's atmosphere and story are consistently praised.

blizzard_cool2663d ago

I really can't see how it can be bad if it borrows some elements and presents them good. This is coming from a ps3 fanboy (me).

I really like the game and I hope to play it soon cause it looks awesome :D

SnuggleBandit2663d ago

Actually the story seems to be one of the downfalls i have most commonly read in reviews...even in this gamespot review he says that the story isn't amazing, but the way that it is told (atmosphere etc.) is great.

PS360_372663d ago

I just don't get the "there aren't enough scary or memorable moments to make this game truly special", comment.

That's just a weird comment to me.

cmrbe2663d ago

i don't get why reviewers see elements from other meduims as a negative. I think it is great.

cayal2662d ago

I'd say they see it as a lack of originality?

(just a guess, not my opinion).

sikbeta2662d ago

@cmrbe

The same "is not original" crap most sites do ala Gametrailers when they reviewed UC2, really stupid, IF the Game borrowed some stuff from other games and it's great, what's the complain?...

Shepherd 2142662d ago (Edited 2662d ago )

I usually wait for three reviewers to review a game. IGN, Gamespot, and 1up. So far IGN has given it a 9.0, Gamespot gave it an 8.5, so now im waiting on 1up. That normally gives me a good idea of whether i should buy a game or not, however ive been sold on this title for a little while now.

mikeslemonade2663d ago

I will pass. If it was getting scores like Mass Effect 2 i'd consider playing it day one. I probably won't play this game at all.

-Ikon-2663d ago

Games like this have no replay value is about 10 hours or so. Im disappointed in remedy 5 years and thats all they can muster. All though rental doesn't equal bad, it just doesn't equal 60 bones.

mikeslemonade2663d ago

Maybe Read Dead Redemption instead of Alan Wake and Modnation Racers.

Hallmark Moment2663d ago (Edited 2663d ago )

Yes because passing up a Mario cart type game means he doesn't own the PS3 :p

He says it has to get Mass Effect 2 scores to play it yet we wants a game that will not come close to ME2's average lol.

DelbertGrady2663d ago (Edited 2663d ago )

I have a PS3 as much as mikeslemonade has a 360.

I was being sarcastic. If you check mikelemonades comment history you will see that he's in every thread about Alan Wake saying he won't be getting it for his imaginary 360. You'll also notice the rest of his comments praising the PS3 and rabidly bashing the 360.

I don't have a PS3. If I did I would be getting Modnation racers. It looks awesome. As does Alan Wake.

UnwanteDreamz2663d ago (Edited 2663d ago )

You shouldn't have even mentioned ModNation in this comment section. Alan Wake is getting solid review scores. If I had a 360 I'd pick it up. Too many FPS out right now, this looks fresh.

karl2663d ago

@soda

u made a solid point... alan wake looks good
and even though i dont have a 360 i would get it just as im getting modnation racers for my PS3

mephixto2663d ago (Edited 2663d ago )

You will miss a lot of great games if you keep using that logic

asdr3wsfas2662d ago (Edited 2662d ago )

Quit pretending you can quantify fun. People can't even agree on numbers rating physical appearance.

If someone gives a JRPG a 10 I still know I don't wanna play it. People can bash on Lair all they want, it is one of my favorite games. You're steering a dragon using the controller as reins - that's the coolest shit ever. When I heard that I knew I'd love the game.

This is a great score. But I post on Gamespot a lot. The users there have a very strange logic: ONLY Gamespot scores matter. 360 fanboys are going to get CURB STOMPED because they have been hyping this as a AAA 9.0 + game. Anything that fails to meet the score is fair game for fanboys to laugh at. 8.5 is unacceptable to them. Oh my God, I'm going to go scroll their forums.

http://www.gamespot.com/pag...

Great score outside of Gamespot world, but people who post there knows how it rolls. In Gamespot's terms this game flopped.

Now 360 fanboys will patiently wait for GT5 to score less than 10 to get back at PS3 fanboys because PS3 fanboys have naturally claimed that GT>Forza. Forza got a 9.5/10 meaning the only way for GT5 to be King of Racing Sim in Gamespot Land is to get a 10/10.

It's partially why I left that website, people get far too caught up on one reviewer's opinion that they fail to see that games like Alan Wake are still great, just not worthy of the hype ;)

UnwanteDreamz2663d ago

This is crazy man. I know you speak the truth but to see it laid out that way makes it seem so ignorant (more so than normally).

Hank Hill2663d ago

You take this fanboy stuff way too seriously.

-Alpha2663d ago

How so Hank? Just sharing how GS works for those unaware.

Bodyboarder_VGamer2662d ago

I like gamespot because the fanboys there have firm rules that don't change depending on the forecast like it often happens here in N4G. =)

X360 fans hyped Alan Wake and it flopped *end of discussion, now when's the next PS3 game coming out? O h boy, System Wars forum mus t be a warzone right now... That place has more fanboys than N4G itself!

FACTUAL evidence2663d ago (Edited 2663d ago )

Oh, wait a sec...

EDIT: Metacritic: Heavy Rain=87 Alan Wake=85
So which one is the movie again?...

-MD-2663d ago (Edited 2663d ago )

Who says it isn't?

Edit: Heavy Rain would be the interactive movie. Alan Wake would be the thriller.

Heavy Rain tried something new and succeeded that's why it scored so high. Guaranteed if a sequel came out and it used the same formula it would score well below 87.

However Heavy Rain has 106 reviews and Alan Wake only has 40 so how about we wait a bit before we officially call Alan Wake an 85.

FACTUAL evidence2663d ago

I believe Indigo prophecy has the title for innovation in that department. What HR did was nothing new. Indeed, first game to do it this gen, but it wasn't anything we haven't seen before. Story wise, AW has nothing on HR, and gameplay...I'm not going to go there, it depends on the player. It doesn't matter because I own HR, and i will be getting Alan Wake.

mikeslemonade2663d ago

Normally the gameranking score goes lower after more reviews. At 100 reviews it will probably have an 8.4. And stop using metacritic it rounds the scores up.

Hallmark Moment2663d ago

"Heavy Rain=87 Alan Wake=85
So which one is the movie again?"

So a lower average means games are movie games? WTF? Where are these fanboys coming from, scraping the bottom of the barrel with this batch.

FACTUAL evidence2663d ago (Edited 2663d ago )

Umm not a fanboy. Besides, obviously you don't get my comment. It was meant for the 360 fanboys comparing AW and HW for some odd reason. In the end HR has a higher score. Don't know what you were just talking about...but lets just act like you didn't make a comment.

I have to stop watching these video reviews...Absolutely amazing...listen to these fanboys going on...look at that video!!!...LMFAO...I new this game was gonna be an incredible experience....The first DLC will be free to first time buyers...LOL...it's gonna be EPIC...that video review had a few spoilers in there, but I don't care...looks like a 10/10...

Look at all the phantom no's...haha...I love it...These morons giving a game as incredible as this 6/10 are gonna regret it once it releases and EVERYONE gets to see/play it for themselves...There gonna look like idiots..

Carlton Banks2663d ago

I expected this game to score way better, especially with all the hype, 5 years for this??

clarkjudo2663d ago

Changes were made in the direction of the game. Something to fit a sandbox experience to what it is now. The campaign was not the only thing in development. But also the development of the DLC's for added story and game play. First DLC will be offered along with Pre-order.
