There is something to be said about the hero's journey in a videogame. The grand quests and epic characters are an industry staple. Notably, outside of very few games, the hero will not die. When the infamous "Game Over" screen appears, "Retry?" is not too far behind taunting players to be the vanquishers, not the vanquished. The desire to defeat evil at all costs is a powerful driving force to give urgency and importance on the story. Besides, everyone likes being the hero at one point in their life.
