Steve Jobs has stepped forward with six reasons why Apple is saying no to Flash. We break 'em down and let our staff speak their minds.
only reason it would show how Flawed their os really is
simplicity is not innovation. Jobs just wants to control the experience with an iron fist. I would LOVE to see what having flash would do to these devices.
Gonna get CS5 and make some apps, I already know Action Script lets see if theres $$$ to be made
Flash can run all those FREE FLASH games. Thats why Steve hates it.
watch your CPU load when playing those flash games, notice how it kind of skyrocketed, I doubt iPhone can even run those. So I guess Apple's reason is rather than having people's iPhones explode when running those games, simply deny them the opportunity.
I think you're right. I've purchased a few apps from the app store that look like they could have easily been made with flash.
thats's why they don't want it
Didn't you read the letter? Steve cares crap about the Free flash Based games.. The primary reason Apple doesn't allow Flash on iPhone and iPad is cause Flash doesn't have any 'VARIANTS' meaning there is no separate version of flash for a mobile device or PS3 or any other device for that matter... This is why Apple calls Adobe LAZY.. If you ever see a Flash video, then you see there are roll overs meaning if you move your cursor on the video, you get the options like pausing, skipping (which go away once you stop moving it).. This CANNOT be implemented on the iPhone or iPad since there is NO pointer in it. Hence they would have to re-write the code back (the site people) to enhance it for it so why not directly write in HTML5? And h264 coding (which is the current vids which work with iPad) uses the internal HARDWARE to decode stuff hence takes very little resource whereas FLASH IS SOFTWARE based decoding and uses much more resource... The difference is HUGE.. You get 2wice the battery performance off the device and very little heat since the processor isn't strained much.. FLASH was great, but I hope HTML5 takes over... Everything can run HTML5 (Safari and Google Chrome don't even require Plugins), it uses less resource and IS MORE STABLE than Flash.
^ someone that actually read the article and put a decent opinion on it. Anyhoo, can't wait to see what flash does to 'battery life' on my droid since that seems to be the main argument apple has. But I can understand apple's negative view on Flash though. Anyone with a history of Apple knows that Adobe has always given Apple a kinda 'third-wheel' attention since back in like 96 or so. You know a lot of us mac users have been waiting for Adobe to release a stable flash player/plug-in for god knows how long, and they've only released the gaia build and that still doesn't cut it.
Can't say I disagree with him. Flash DOES pretty much suck.
It does suck in many instances but until HTML 5 comes into play, Steve should just shut up because 90% of the web uses it.
@above exactly, HTML5 and Flash will co-exist for a year or so at the converison rate by my guess unless adobe ramp up their game and bring in some really good stuff for flash, which they likely won't as they haven't really done much new in the last few years and are just sitting on photoshop which is basically a monopoly for them.
Best counterpoints I've seen so far.. "Holier-than-thou, an adjective, meaning "marked by an air of superior piety or morality". Everybody has moments in their life where they get into a "holier-than-thou" attitude, and I think Steve Jobs' open letter regarding Adobe, and Flash in particular, really fits the bill. There are three specific points I want to address to illustrate just how holier-than-thou, hypocritical, and misleading this letter really is." http://www.osnews.com/story...
I couldn't have said it any better. I also really don't like Apple so I would fear that Id come off with some bias, but that article is chalk full of facts about the issue.
Another View. Quite funny in its delivery. http://www.roughlydrafted.c...
"Another View. Quite funny in its delivery. " Good read.
HTML will take YEARS to overthrow FLASH. If that ever happens and IF ADOBE lets it happen. Competition normally makes companies up their game. Adobe will most likely not want to lose marjetshare here and most likely will optimize FLASH (Hopefully) But until HTML can get going, Flash is used mostly around the web. Steve is just bent out of shape because he is seeing his grip on things vanish slowly (Android will most likely overthrow Apple in the Phone mobile area soon. They already took marketshare away from them)
It's not about HTML5 overthrowing FLASH, it's about both of them co-existing. And believe it or not, if there is 1 company that can force transition, then it's Apple. If you have ever used a Google phone like HTC Droid or other, then you can see how Flash on it sucks... It sometimes comes out of the frame and overlaps videos, it crashes the browser far too often, you can't get proper roll over menu due to the lack of proper Touch Screen support... And HTML5 IS better than Flash, there is no arguing on that point. If you read the letter, then it says that H264 code which can run on the current 'i' devices and most latest phone actually use hardware to decode stuff and Flash uses software.. The result is that the H264 code decodes faster, uses less resources and less power.... It's blatantly superior. Even Google Chrome has entire support for HTML5 built in right at their Browsers heart.... OH and 90% of the net might be Flash, but 40% of it is Youtube (Provided by statistics in letter) which works on Apple products and be rest assured that the other 40-50% is PORN sites lol...
"Adobe will most likely not want to lose marjetshare here and most likely will optimize FLASH" Well I've been waiting for them to optimize it for quite awhile and it still seems like how it was way back. I was a flash developer for 6 years before going into health, and with the inception of actionscript many moons ago, Flash seemed like it was going quite well. But then Macromedia got bought over and it went downhill. Flash always looked great for animated menus and had much potential, but it seems it evolved into being used for your daily routine video, simple games, and ads. There's like only a handful of flash sites that are actually good. The rest of the webpages out there are just littered with a bunch of flash ads or senseless videos. I'd say Adobe is more concerned with optimizing and improving photoshop, rather than care too much for Flash since it wasn't their baby, it was Macromedia's.
you do have to agree with him about if it is a cross platform thing that it is usually set to what ever the lower end can handle
Whatever Steve. Not allowing flash is 13itch move. I would place that along the line of charging for multiplayer on XBOX live. I have not and will not support XBOX Live and Apple products.
Well Flash will just be too much for an imac to handle since my brother inlaws useless piece of crap can barely handle 2 tasks before locking up. Flash would send any apple product into melt down. Now he has put that Imac junk into its box and is a happy PC owner which are way more user friendly than Imac Crap.
Exactly the reason Jobs Hates Flash. Flash On OSx is Clumsy, crappy coded software.
He hates flash simply because he wants to restrict apple users to their applications and their rules plain and simple
Steve hate Flash cause he knows his company aren't getting paid for playing games for their APPS.
