Wow, probably the most coherent and well thought out argument I've heard for creative innovation in general. I think this same concept applies to other media too, like movies and music, but I think because of the extraordinary amount of money flying around those two industries, especially as compared to the video game industry, there is a lot more wiggle room. I think you hit the nail on the head in talking about the conflict between business and creativity, which isn't an inherent conflict but exists given the current structure of our economic system. I'm not so naive as to say that they can co-exist in absolute harmony, but I think there's absolutely room for business, essentially the collective minds of money, to fund the blossoming creativity in programmers and developers. And in certain rare cases, that sort of thing pays off. Not to cater to the author, but I think Braid was a great example of how a developer took a different creative route and ended up arriving a financial success. These kinds of groundbreaking innovations, as you mention, do indeed happen, but if I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like your arguing that the system simply doesn't foster that kind of innovation, especially when caught in the web of genre. I whole-heartedly agree, and hope something happens to change that system. In the meantime, I'll just keep playing Portal and weeping with joy.
