Love Gaming? Sony Move for PS3 Will Change Your World

goodhousekeeping.com Erik Eibert writes

"I was recently given the unique opportunity to experience the amazing new PlayStation Move motion controller from Sony, expected to be in stores this fall. This handheld device looks like a microphone topped with a goofy glowing orb. But it contains sensors that work with a PlayStation Eye Camera to track your movements in 3D and bring them to life as part of an onscreen game.
The realism can't be matched, in my opinion, by a Nintendo Wii"

mhmm interesting especially were this is coming from....

whateva3021d ago

& the part about "kids pretending they're Beauty and the Beast"
is something I thought about because of the augmented reality Sony can make games that put you in Cartoon worlds like 'Cool World' & 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' or you could play Doctor with the Move as your tools.

whateva3021d ago

I guess people don't like to see positive Move Reviews!

catguykyou3020d ago

The Wii didn't change my world, neither will Move.

Gue13020d ago

I found this line particulary funny.

fox023020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

This adverti... err... article is cute.

IdleLeeSiuLung3020d ago

Why is this approved? It is some dude saying great things about PS Move. However, he isn't really saying anything other than spouting Sony advertisement.

If he was a high profiled developer, then it might be considered news. This is no different than a forum post by an anonymous dude. The internet has plenty of them.

lil Titan3020d ago

change my world or not i want Monster Hunter back there is no reason why some of the games on wii cant come to PS3 now. soon enough i wont need but two consoles 360 & PS3

JoelR3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

@IdleLee

A journalist for a respected magazine with strong influence on household buying decisions is not like some anonymous internet blogger in any shape or fashion.

Qui-Gon Jim3020d ago

It's a lot like all the reports we've been seeing lately that have been praising Natal. Why do you have a problem with it this time? Oh, I think I have a guess...

IdleLeeSiuLung3020d ago

Yeah, well why don't we ask a car salesman what he thinks of Natal? What about a construction worker? Secretary?

We will just flood this place with useless information from people that basically has nothing to do with gaming.

As I said, if it was a celebrity, developer or something caught on video that is different than that is news.

But since you seem to like that sort of information, I'm sure you find a lot of useful information on the internet as trustworthy news!

SprSynJn3020d ago

"As I said, if it was a celebrity, developer or something caught on video that is different than that is news."

That has to be one of the most ridiculous statements I have read on this site. If you cannot see the significance of this article, then you just don't understand business. This is exactly the audience Sony is trying to capture, and the same audience Nintendo has been so successful with. If Sony has in no way "influenced" this editor in his article, then this is a very good step up for the PS3.

That has nothing to do with the fact that this is not considered news by n4g.com standards.

Nothing in my statement had anything to do with Sony's business model ... so what is your point? I'm not even sure how you connected the dots like that and made ridiculous assumptions.

vhero3019d ago

"Erik reviews products for editorial consideration and for ad and Seal clearance. The majority of the products he tests include consumer electronics, toys, and home improvement goods."

This says a lot really as it means its gonna hit the exact market Sony is going for. The non hardcore gaming market which right now Nintendo have a massive grip on. He is a non gamer and he really liked it which means other non gamers will probably like it aswell and buy a playstation for it.

these are the kind of people you cater when promoting casuals experiences, not through attention whore celebrities *cough*MS*cough*natal*cough*

Raf1k13020d ago

I think it's good that a site like this has picked up on Move since it's audience is made up mainly of the kind of people who would think it's just a copy of the Wii controller.

It's good that someone who is probably a casual gamer thinks it much better than the Wii.

Shadow Flare3020d ago

Well who better could ms have used to pretend natal is good then to use ACTORS

j/k

siyrobbo3020d ago

really? nintendo and there millions upon millions of dollars would beg to differ.....

joemayo763020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

aww man it's almost a year later and that image still makes me chuckle

"Ever wonder what the bottom of an avatar's shoe looks like.....well BAM!! There it is!!"

on topic - good to hear postive stuff bout the move and in the other article about natal but i'll have to wait and see both natal and move's ability to perform in person before i decide to get any more motion controls in my house

Bigpappy3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

that is the first full endorsement of the move I have read in the media so far. Some people said it was more accurate than the wii, but this guy is actually saying it is better that the wii. Lets see if more media follow suit and give some love to the Move. The would be good news for PS3 owner who care about motion control, but fanboys would just use it to beat-up on the wii more than they already do.

PS-Eye can track you at up to 120 FPS @ 320 X 240 or 60 FPS @ 640 X 480 Natal can only track you at 30 FPS with a 640 X 480 cam that's right PS-Eye and move can track you at up to 4 times faster than Natal and that's before Natal have to put all the other work on the 360's CPU

@ SasanovaS1987 not trying to slay them just posting some facts for the uninformed that haven't notice the speed of the PS-Move

SasanovaS19873021d ago

whateva just slayed everyone in this thread that has anything bad to say about move.

MexicanAppleThief3020d ago

Holy sh!t those gifs are amazing! Is there a link to that video? I'd love to see the full demo please matey :)

hay3020d ago

@whateva: It's one of the most informing and enlightening comments I've seen here for a long time. Have a bubble, it's on me ; p

Pennywise3020d ago

Bigpappy... LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What did you say? I was too busy being impressed by the gifs whateva posted.

bjornbear3020d ago

whateva just owned you, those gifs are amazing i didn't knw it tracked that well without the move =O

ToothWhiteningFairy3020d ago

don't you mean tracks the ice-cream thingy?

Kratos Spartan3020d ago

that ice cream thingy will be the deciding factor in the motion control competition. It will make the difference. You saw 3.1, THAT is fast.

GiantEnemyCrab3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

Natal is based primarily on the Israel tech Prime Sense.

http://www.vgchartz.com/for...

Here are the specs. Where did you get the spec information for Natal Whateva?

Maximum image input is 60fps at 1600x1200

Hideo_Kojima3020d ago

I like my PS3 a lot more and I believe it Move will be better than Natal BUT...

I sometimes wonder what you guys are smoking. Bare with me let me try and explain.

The gifs that whateva showed are totally irrelevant to lag issues.
The refresh rate can explain why Move lags less but those gifs dont prove anything.

The video is recorded edited and displayed on your TV for all we can see from those gifs the whole proces could have an hour of lag just because you cant see any lag between the overlays and the movements ON THE SCREEN it does not mean that there isnt any lag between the movements on the CONTROLLER and the SCREEN.

@3.7 - bigpappy
The PS Eye is not tracking without the Move in those gifs...

It is overlaying the glowing globe with a 3D object. The move controller is being used in all of the gifs along with face tracking. It is just buried under the overlays.

The body of the skeleton is all down to guess work and predictions.

Are you all ignorant or just believe what you want to believe?

whateva3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

"Natal is confirmed at 30FPS for scanning, so the 60FPS spec here probably relates to a lower resolution scan that Microsoft doesn't use... similar to that 1600x1200 RGB image size."

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

Right from the mouth of the People that help Make Project Natal!

sit down trick!

Edit: @ Guntrol yeah the PS-Eye can track your body in the gifs I posted it's doing Head tracking along with tracking the Move but it can also do full body Skeleton tracking and it can even do eye tracking to know where you are looking.

it can track you in 3D without the Move in your hands

http://i39.tinypic.com/2jae...

Arnon3020d ago

"PS-Eye can track you at up to 120 FPS @ 320 X 240 or 60 FPS @ 640 X 480 Natal can only track you at 30 FPS with a 640 X 480 cam that's right PS-Eye and move can track you at up to 4 times faster than Natal and that's before Natal have to put all the other work on the 360's CPU"

You still haven't exactly explained where you received information about what Natal's resolution will be. Not to mention, at the very end of the article, right after your quote, it says that Kudo talked about multiple resolutions.

Hideo_Kojima3020d ago

I was unaware of PS Eye being able to do full skeleton tracking?

Why hasn't sony released any demos showing this?

I've seen that video ages ago but I have never seen them track skeleton movements. I though it was only face tracking - move tracking - motion sensing (like seen in Eye Toy.

My phone can detect faces and my laptops web cam can do exactly what PS Eye is doing in that video with a program called ManyCam which overlays 3d masks over peoples faces.

If it can track skeletons Sony better show it off at E3 because than Natal will have nothing on PS Eye

GiantEnemyCrab3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

The camera is perfectly capable of 60fps and 1600x1200. Kudo has gone on record at saying that multiple resolutions can and will be supported. Did you read the second article?

Pftt. Respect is earned and a fool like you is not even close.

With your talk about full skeletal mapping on EYE/Move it sounds like you know nothing except what you misinterpret reading on the internet. And your gif proves nothing about full skeletal mapping you Walmart pimp.

LOL, at the 5 disagrees when I posted sourced proof that the camera is capable of more than 30fps and 800x600. Live in denial all you like.

@below: Providing libraries in the SDK's for standard body types is NOT even CLOSE to full skeletal mapping.. You fool on yourself again.

"and Z is deduced from the area of the sphere,”"

haha the thing can even truly read Z space! Your article is telling.

Just stop..

whateva3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

"The result is a 640x480 image where every single pixel has a depth component."

that's from PrimeSense

http://www.endsights.com/ne...

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2...

"Also touched on was the fact that the libraries they are supplying will include skeleton tracking."

"Hirani said the Eye will also support “skeleton tracking.”

Now get to the back of the class!

Edit: @ GiantEnemyCrab the primesense cam can do upto 60 FPS at a lower res but Natal will not be using that lower res! can you read? it's right there in your face coming from Primesense.

3020d ago
Arnon3020d ago

Lol how is that trolling?

GiantEnemyCrab3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

Whateva: I spent some more time reading a few more Natal spec articles and it looks like MS is purposely keeping it at 30fps. The camera is capable of more but MS seems to want to keep everything at 30fps. However, Kudo has said it can be variable both FPS and resolution as indicated in the article you posted earlier.

I give you the point on the 30fps.. Nice one. I will call you Pimp Master for the rest of the day. =) Respect earned.

Eddy: All I see in your post is SPAM. You call us trolls yet contribute nothing. Whateva brought Natal into this and you bet their will be some checking of his facts.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

Pure factual Evidence. Can't denied Move and PS Eye have better potential.

One game per year is the rate Nintendo's going at in support of Motion Plus. Wii Sports 1.5 in 2009, and I expect but a similarly incremental upgrade to Twilight Princess this year.

Meanwhile Sony will be ripping it up with 20 first party games in the first 5 months of launch:

http://www.joystiq.com/2010...

..many of which at least appeal a LITTLE to me (wish I could say the same about Wii, as my M+ collects dust).

There's no doubt that the launch lineup looks very iffy for a core gamer, but I almost guarantee we'll see some epic uses for shortly after launch, if not at launch- like LittleBigPlanet level design and other kinds of 1:1 object manipulation. Lord knows there's not a snowball's chance in hell that Nintendo will do anything with their controller- they're too busy raking in money from soccer moms and 6 year olds to worry about guys like us who just want to see something pushing the limits of the tech ASAP.

I was one of the original Wii fanboys who was frothing at the mouth when the Revolution was announced and was advertised as tracking in 3D space- but then I realized it was all a bunch of fluff. It was this gen that Nintendo stopped caring much at all about the dedicated group of gamers who carried them from NES thru Gamecube. Sure, they have a couple good games for us, but the quantity and quality of games Sony puts out on an annual basis is just staggering compared to Nintendo, and that's why frankly I'm a lot more optimistic about Move.

lavitz3020d ago

No it won't. Neither will Natal. Motion control is mediocre at best.
