Nintendo Wii Finally Gets Ability to Stream Netflix Movies Today

Nintendo of America and Netflix today announced that Netflix members who own Nintendo's Wii can now enjoy thousands of movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix via Wii. The two companies announced partnership plans in January and are making Netflix on the Wii available as of today.

Streaming from Netflix via the Wii console is provided at no additional cost to Netflix members who have a plan starting at $8.99 a month, a Wii console and a broadband Internet connection.

It's about time after announcing this months ago. Why do we have to use discs though? We should be able to just have a Netflix channel

BeaRye3168d ago

You need a disc to do it on the PS3 too. It's not like it's only the Wii that needs a disc.

That's going to change soon though for the PS3

I was going to post about it when I got it last month but figured somebody would have already done that. Is it JUST NOW that others are getting theirs?

I guess I should have posted about it. I have to say it is quite impressing how the wii smooths out the SD quality images. This is kind of funny to say but the Wii does SD better than the 360 and PS3. Reason is the HD systems are trying to upscale the SD content to whatever res the TV is using where as the Wii IS SD by default.

Looking at SD streaming on an HD system only results in more noticeable digitizing of the pixels. Maybe the Wii is doing something different as there seems to be less noticeable pixelization. It actually works really well.

While the amount of HD content trails behind the SD stuff I still find myself using the 360/PS3 for watching shows like the office and 30 rock in HD and older shows and movies from Starz on the Wii.

Interesting to see who it will work on a handheld such as the dsi, iphone or psp like they are rumored to be working on.

edit: the disc is only temp for now. I do believe nintendo will create a dedicated channel you can download from the shop. Same for Sony. I am betting they too will get some sort of direct link from the XMB in a later update.

So far MS has the best interface but only because they designed it specifically for netflix and the 360. The ones used by wii/ps3 are based off the roku box and other players that offer the service. Simple but it gets the job done.

I have Netflix on both 360 and PS3 (and PC, of course) and am interested in how Standard Def vids look on Nintendo's console in comparison to Standard Def content on the other platforms. Either way, it is simply nice to have the option.

As most of Netflix steaming is not HD I fail to see the point of your post. Unless you just wanted to show how little you know and show everyone how much you suck at trolling.

You see my friend, the issue with some people is that they are not content knowing they lack intellect. They somehow feel the need to let the world know about it...

tlogank3168d ago

Wasn't this available like a month or so ago?

darthv723168d ago

I've had my disc since middle of last month.

Only console I have in my living room is a Wii for my kids. This way I can stream movies for them whenever they want and keep my 360/ps3 from being taken over.

You're a day late and a dollar short, buddy. I've been watching movies on my PS3 since last year.
