1M Game Sales Required to Make Profit On Wii

Of the 74 publishers making Wii games only 3 of them had more profitable games than unprofitable ones and one of those is Nintendo.

According to Reggie Fils-Aime, Wii developers need to move 1 million units of any Wii game in order to make a profit. Domestically only 16 Wii titles out of 468 released in the U.S. have hit that milestone.

As I mentioned in my previous article, VGChartz is a little more generous in their global sales totals listing 79 Wii titles which we can now call "profitable" and and 770 which we can call "unprofitable".

Why bother wasting money, making rubbish games that cause an audience to lose confidence in your product and, thus, give them reason to avoid said product? After almost four years, Wii owners have learned what publishers we can trust, and THQ, Activision, EA, Ubisoft...aren't.

Did they have good games under their belt on the Wii? A couple of Gems when one combines all four. Do they outweigh the trash (Not necessarily casual games, literal trash)? Absolutely not.

What, first it's 'shut up Reggie', now it's 'Everyone listen to that thing Reggie said a year ago'?

Anyway, nice try (and nice job lurking the comments section), but for reference purposes, a two second internet search reveals that the New York times corrected the one million thing as a misquote not two days after it ran the story.

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.c...

"Finally, one clarification on the story we did Monday on this subject. For the story, Nintendo had told me that publishers of Wii games need to sell only one million games to turn a profit. The company wrote me to say that it meant that publishers can make a profit selling fewer than one million copies of a particular game. Nintendo declined to be any more specific about a number."

Oh, and the industry says you're wrong too: http://www.gamasutra.com/vi...

"The report estimated average development costs for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games at $15-$30 million per title. With games that cost that much, game companies need to sell between 500,000 and 1 million units to break even, excluding overhead...

That's compared to Xbox, PS2 and GameCube games that cost around $3-$5 million to make on average, Ibis said, while Wii games cost $5-$7 million."

I posted a Kotaku link, on the article, about the New York Times correcting itself.
We'll see if the comment gets "approved" or not, that will let us know if GameStooge is serious about its journalism.

How did that pan out? I'm loath to give the article another hit by looking.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahaha

If that was even remotely true then the undustry would be done for, especially considering you'd need around 3 million sales to be profitable on the HD consoles.

SpoonyRedMage2872d ago

The fact that this got approved is really a new low for N4G and the fact that people believe this just shows how idiotic Nintendo haters can be.

and that once they've payed that the can produce as many games as they want for a year but one game doesn't need to sell a million copy's. not sure though but thats the way I interpreted this quote

"Finally, one clarification on the story we did Monday on this subject. For the story, Nintendo had told me that publishers of Wii games need to sell only one million games to turn a profit. this is a load of rubbish wow who writes these articles should get shot i mean some little idiot writing things that are not true most of the hd games only sell 240,000-400,000 copies at retail so then wouldnt all devs be bust and at the gdc2010 iwata said that wii development costs less than ps1 development and thats called clever tech so i think u need to sell 350,000 on a decent title 500,000-1 million on a high end title, and 1.5 million on something like MH3 but we all no that Mh3 has sold 1.2million already in 1 country so try 3 million for that title and wii will get MH4 if that happens but yeah it depends on the investment GT5 ps3 costs 70million so far to develop but that has a 6-10 million following so £400million easy could be achieved at retail worldwide hence big 70million investment, nintendo have a good few games that have sold more than this mariokart, supermariobros, mario galaxy, smashbrosbrawl, could all benifit off a 40-50million budget i think but yeah wii games make the most profit by far dont listen to all the rubbish about u cant turn a profit on the wii Mh3 will bring in about £160million at retail and cost about 20-30million to develop so 100million profit there nintendo this gen have made billions off 1 game wiifit, wiisports, wiiplay ect have made billions at retail
