IGN: Splinter Cell: Conviction Review

Despite a few questionable level design choices, Splinter Cell Conviction is a great addition to the series. There's no way IGN could go back to a stealth game as it used to be; they've been converted. The only reason to hesitate and pick this up is if you only care about the single-player story and want nothing to do with anything else Conviction has to offer. If that's the case, then there's not a lot of game to be had. And also, you're nuts. The best parts of Conviction are the experiences you have long after you've left Sam Fisher behind.

ps3 has the greatest stealth game of all time according to ign so dont go bragging

kydrice3021d ago

IGN's Final scores aren't averages of their other scores, they even tell you somewhere on their site. And 007, tell your parents just because they were once brothers and sisters and got married it doesn't mean that its an ok thing to do, inbreeding is not cool man.

happy_gilmore3021d ago

remember prince of persia

ign gave it a 93. it's at 81 in meta.

this is BS. 5 hour SP and boring MP is not worth my money.

exnihilonihilfit3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

The score is way above the average, it's that none of the individual category scores are even at, let alone above, the average. I don't have a problem with the game getting a 9.3, but that's just really weird. I don't know if I can take IGN seriously at all after this.

If gameplay was a 9.3 and everything else was a 5, and they still gave it a 9.3, maybe I could see where they were going, but nothing is even listed as 9.3. I can see that maybe they wanted to make a point about their score not being an average, but does it even take the category scores into account at all?

I think this game is probably even deserving of a 9.3, I expected it to score high, but even a hardcore splinter cell and Xbox fan has to admit this is a bit fishy. Seems like they gave the overall before giving the individual scores at least.

You should either be upset that the score shouldn't be above the average, or be upset that the individuals scores aren't as high as they should be. If they hadn't scored it this way, then there would be no room for doubt, but they did what they did, and now there are some very legitimate questions to be asked. Does anyone know if they've scored something quite like this before? I could be more accepting if there was some kind of precedent.

blitz06233021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

So you only buy them because they are set as AAA by the gaming media? If this game got a 7.5-8 would you get it?

If you're a real gamer you would have your own set of AAA games, whether exclusive or not, but you're just another one of those blind fanboys that just buy hyped games, finish it, and pretend it's good because it scored 90%+ but to you it's a 'meh' game.

i'm glad i pre-ordered this on amazon. tuesday can't come soon enuff!

chanto233021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

I'm playing the game right now and i was expecting more like an 8.5 but 9.3 is great for the people that care. The game is fun and the gameplay mechanics are cool. The mix between action and stealth is perfect. It's a great model that upcoming stealth games should borrow from. The graphics aren't spectacular but they are pretty and get the job done. My only gripe with the game is the control scheme which confuses me from time to time.

Great Game i recommend it to those that like action, stealth and "adventure" genres.

hazeblaze3021d ago

I'm sure it's a great game... but did we really wait ALL THAT TIME for a 5 hr game?!!! That really sucks... I don't have to worry about finding the money to buy it b/c it just got demoted to a rental.

silvacrest3021d ago

im not trolling, i loved double agent

anyway, WTH is up with games having a 5-6 hour story mode? some of us aren't multiplayer addicts

great score but disappointing for people who only wanted this for the single player

presto7173021d ago

OT: the game looks real nice so I might play it if someone ever goes out of their way to get me an xbox sometime down the line. Only things I dont like are how the graphics look a bit dated and how the whole Mark-and-Execute thing makes the game too n00b friendly. But hey, the game isn't perfect. I can live with that.

Bathyj3021d ago

I didnt watch the video, I'm at work.

Is the SP really 5-6 hours. Thats a shame.

Oh well, it does have extras in Deniable Ops, like RB6 had the Terrorist Hunt and MW2 had challenges too. If I replay it as much as the demo it should be ok.

Still, can we please get a bit more content for Single players, as stated above, not everyone cares abut running around for another fragfest of deathmatching or CTF.

Seems to me, the AI is supposed to be so good in this game a level editor could have been added quite easily. Now THAT would rock, and rock hard.

jjohan353021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Even without the cut scenes, MGS4 was almost 4 times as long.

If it took a reviewer 5 hours to finish, that means someone out there is capable of finishing this in less than 3 hours.

Darkfocus3021d ago

I want this game but I want to know how well optimized it is for PC. is the ui changed to accommodate pc gamers, are the textures higher res?, do the controls translate well to mouse and keyboard?, etc. assassins creed was a poor port so I'm really hoping ubi did better with this one.

PS. does anyone know if this will have the ridiculous DRM all of ubi's games have had recently?

raztad3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

IGN is becoming every passing day more of a joke.

How

TRANSLATE to 9.3?

I know the score is NOT an average but where that 9.3 came from?

EDIT: I noticed there is a whole thread bellow discussing my question. My opening comment remains, 9.3 is just an arbitrary number that doesnt reflex any of the factors they are objectively evaluating in the game. Perhaps are they lacking a FUN factor?

sikbeta3021d ago

Great Score, I wonder IF they [IGN] can take out some points for the stupid-DRM implemented by Ubisoft from the PC version, of course not, but It would be good as a Way to "protest" against that crap...

gamingisnotacrime3021d ago

did he said something incorrect? ME2 was released early this year and that game is a AAA 360/PC available. SC:C looks solid, Alan Wake and Crackdown are highly acclaimed titles, for the average joe that is too many games to buy them all.
common sense is not so common around here

3021d ago
-Alpha3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

It's because all the PS3 fanboys are jealous that Xbox fans are happy with their games getting good scores. If this was a PS3 game Deuce would get more agrees. A PS3 fan talking about how he loves all the great games coming out will get mad agrees, yet Deuce does the same and he gets massive butthurt disagrees. It's evident how bad the PS3 fanboys on here are. These sad little fanboys hide behind the disagree button because that's all they can do.

Notice how Deuce expresses he is excited for the 360 lineup and Greywulf decides to troll the 360's lineup last year showing how upset he is over this score. Guarantee that when 360 fanboys make fun of the PS3 for 2007 people like Greywulf would tell them to stop living in the past. Yet Greywulf decides to do the same here. How very hypocritical. It's clear some people can never be happy for the competition and appreciate the industry as a whole.

Anyways, this is a good score and the demo was fun. Was thinking of picking it up, but for a 5 hour game? Hell no. Unacceptably short for me to warrant a $70 pickup.

Now I wonder how all the 360 fanboys who tried to pick on God of War's length will express their feelings for this game. Ah, the fanboy circle of life is so entertaining.*grabs popcorn*

Immortal3213021d ago

this game is far to casual.

Bigpappy3021d ago

This game has about 4 modes of play, and most people will play at least 3 of those modes. I hope some of the DLC is free though.

gamingisnotacrime3021d ago

deuce expressed exactly what i expressed (PS3 fan) and many others PS3 fans when GoW3 was released shortly after MAG and Heavy Rain
"Too Many Games, so little Money", and we all got many agrees and it was a celebration. this thread should be a 360 celebration, there are plenty of games to get excited about for the 360 in 2010, and for me being a PS360 owner 2010 has just TOO MUCH content, So Happy!!!!

Neo6043021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

I got ME2 on PC but I just play to the part you create your own character.
Too busy with GOW3 and FF13.

3XP3021d ago

I thought you were going to say too busy working, but I should have known that you didn't have a job...lol

Solidus187-SCMilk3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

If you really cant read, the review score ISNT AN AVERAGE as it says on the IGN site.

Also you you want a point of reference The average of the categories in their GOW3 review is a 8.9 and that game got a 9.3 too.

Funny I dont remember anyone complaining about "teh averages" when that review came out.

Face it, this game is looking good. I cant wait to try it.

Also its really obvious that your not/cant play a game when you get upset that it got a good review.

Shepherd 2143021d ago

Alpha Male is wise indeed.

This game looks great and i liked what i read in this review, im pretty much sold on this game now.

Good year for the 360. First there was Mass Effect 2 which was amazing, now this, and we still have Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, and Halo Reach to look foward too, not to mention some great multiplats like Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space 2, and Dead Rising 2.

I will be very broke this year, but it will be bitter/sweet.

Neo6043021d ago

I bought the ps3 since launch, does that show I have a job?

masterofpwnage3021d ago

does it really matter if deuce gets disagree. imean you know its fanboys, so why you got to ask that question. It happens all the time in n4g for both ps3 and 360 side.
the real question is wth is wrong with the review for example
halo 3

this is just new to me. whats the point of even having score for gameplay perforamnce etc in its not even use for the overall.

ActionBastard3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Duece is right in his statement imo. SC:C looks like a fine game, even if it is casual friendly. 5hrs is a little suspect, but if the MP co-op is good, that "should" make up for it.

Homicide3021d ago

"meh IGN gives out 9s like candy."

I wonder if you'll say the same thing if a PS3 exclusive gets a 9+.

Anyways, great score.

Consoldtobots3021d ago

so basically they take a dump all over single player (this is what made the franchise) and Sam Fisher (this is who made the franchise).

you can't spell ignorant with out IGN.

3021d ago
lokiroo4203021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

ANyone care to explain how the overall score is higher than scores for each category?

And the whole is greater than its parts is BS. Show me another game with a score like this.

Grown Folks Talk3021d ago

like they did to get the review done. Play time is always up to the individual players style. There's a guy on the Ubi forums who has it already. He's barely 5 hours in & on the 5th or 6th level. Depends on how you play. You can beat most any game this gen in 6-7 hours if you really try.

The Lazy One3021d ago

I can't help but wonder how much better it would have been without the complete redesign half way through the development cycle.

This made me more excited for future splinter cells than for this one though.

HolyOrangeCows3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

You'd think after all of these years they would churn out something longer than 5 hours, and not be too pressed for time to add basic stealth mechanics from previous games ( http://www.thelostgamer.com... ). Or perhaps include a favorite multiplayer mode from the previous titles.

lokiroo4203021d ago

Just watched a full playthru on jtv, lol, SC:C is in no way a stealth game.

thief3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Raztad,
You forgot:
360 exclusive: 11/10

And as for those complaining about how this is less stealth-oriented, of course it will be to cater to its audience - the only games that succeed on the 360 are brain-dead shooters, would you believe that the original Mass Effect was almost outsold by Heavy Rain on the PS3?

Thank god Deus Ex 3 and Thief 4 are not 360 exclusive, at least those wil remain true to their roots.

shadow27973021d ago

You think you have too many games being a 360 only owner? I'm struggling to keep up with games on PS3 and 360. Not to mention I've been trying to catch up on PSP too. It's ridiculous how far behind I'm getting. Though I'll be playing this game next week.

Though I'm not at all looking forward to Crackdown 2, so that eases things a bit. I played a few hours of the first and it's still the worst game I've played this generation. I just didn't like it for some reason.

Rainstorm813021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

5 hour gameplay time???? WTF?

What is this Wanted weapons of fate or Terminator salvation? Even rushing through the game, it supposedly being a stealth game shouldve made it more lengthy.

I am very interested in this game but 5hours is a turn off. I guess ill have to gamefly it first. I want to play the Co-op sooo badly.

Although 5 hours for any mainly single player game is outrageous and doesn't justify 60 bucks, no matter the console or game.

Edit :

I agree shadow soo many games so little time.

ape0073021d ago

that sony fanboys are jealous, they suffer from serious insecurity, they're butt-hurt

"oh no no no 9.3 nooooo"

disagree "sniff, sniff"

LOLZ

Hoggy19833021d ago

Can we duplicate this article so that those who actually want to talk about the features of this game can do so? Whereby leaving the people here to waste their lives talking about IGN score averages.

EVILDEAD3603021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Been looking forward to Splinter since E3..and no matter what the fan babies can whine about it won't change a thing..

Great reviews in both IGN and Game informer..that's honestly all that matters..because it's an uphill battle for titles these days with bad reviews from those two

When you get 70 disagrees but only a few actual accounts show up..then you truly know what the N4G.com hate squad is really made of.

On topic..it's good to see an Xbox iconic character get a reboot..and finally a game that does him justice (I never even remotely had interest in picking up Double Agent)

In short..the 360 gamers that want the game..got incentive to do..the rest are just the same old hater noise found in droves on every 360 article..still living up to the 'worst' label every single day

Evil

badz1493021d ago

"how short is too short" kinda article after this right? or is that kind of article exclusive for PS3 games? I don't care, I want those articles! prove to me that the media is not biased! IGN didn't even put the short campaign as (-) in this review! oh why am I not surprised!

lelo2play3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

people are complaining that this score is undeserved because the single player is only 5-6 hours long. Remember that this game has co-op and online.

I just finished a few days back God of War 3... in 7 hours!!! What else does God of War 3 have beside the single player? People did not complain the length of GOW3 so why are they complaining about Splinter Cell? GOW3 had many 9ns and 10ns and people did not complain about the length...

This just proves one thing... FANBOYS ARE IGNORANT, BLIND AND STUPID. Gamers should just ignore them.

3021d ago
Dude4203021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Honestly though, Ubisoft have been making games with great concepts, but there always seems to be something missing. Assassin's Creed for example, it was a cool concept, but it ended up being repetitive and the story was weird.

Same for this, it seems that the gameplay is rock solid and the story sounds decent. 5 hours though? Come on, do a little better than that, well at least there's deniable ops to play.

However IIRC, I beat Uncharted 2 in 6 - 7 hours and I paid in full for the game and the multiplayer was meh, just your average fragfest. Yet every PS3 fanboy praise it like it's the second coming. U2's singleplayer was a good experience don't get me wrong, but don't be hypocrites either, SC:C seems to have a good amount of stuff to do.

moomooakai3021d ago

Missing the point as usual. If this game has a five hour single campaign, then howthe HELL does that equate to 9.3? but you know...heaven forbid someone speaks against the score, right?

meluvulongtime3021d ago

You may not have enough money, but I'm sure you'll have plenty of time with the 5 hour single player campaign. Sounds like the Iraq mission is just tacked on too.
Hopefully the other play modes are as good as IGN makes it seem. I think I'll wait for some kinda price drop before I pick it up.

Therealspy033021d ago

i don't understand why bigalow has 88 disagrees so far. if this were a ps3 title, and someone said "another great game for ps3" everyone would agree with him. in fact, i've seen that very statement for just about every ps3 release for the last 2+ years and i've never seen more disagrees than agrees.

anybody else noticing this huge imbalance?

the guy didn't say anything bad, he didn't say anything against any system. he just said another great game for 360. i don't see what warrants so many disagrees. and the sad thing as...at least half of those ppl probably also took a bubble. cuz it's not enough to disagree with fans of 360 on n4g. you have to shut them up too...

Christopher3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Good score. Do have to agree that their scoring system makes absolutely no sense, though. They shouldn't rank the items individually if the result is all opinion-based.

Biggest3020d ago

I'm still trying to figure out how some games can be greater than the sum of its parts, while other games that have similar parts that are all rated higher and better can be less. The GTA:L&D review is too crazy to ignore. On one hand you have a 50+ hour game complete with multiplayer with great gameplay, graphics, and replay value. On the other you have a very short single player game complete with multiplayer with good gameplay, adequate graphics, and adequate replay value. Yet the former scores lower on the same scale in total. I'm not saying anything is wrong with Splinter Cell. I am saying there is something wrong with the IGN review team.

nycredude3020d ago

IGN is quickly becoming a useless gaming site to me. I mean seriously 5 hour campaign and the only minus is the Iraq level? Also i know the final score isn't an average but not of the parts scored more than 9.0 but the overall is 9.3?

I was hyped for this but I am not much of a mp playing on the 360 so a 5 hour campaign puts this in the maybe rent if I have time for it category.

WTF
i don't have any issue with the game
but i do have an issue of how IGN is scoring
How the F do you have a score higher then the average of their Evalation of each part?

That makes no sence, and this isn't the first time i have seen IGN do this

ALSO CAN ANYONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME
GTADLC (PS3/360 got same scores)
http://ps3.ign.com/articles...
look at the final scores (both ps3/360)

now compare to splinter cell
notice how GTADLC has nothing below a 9 and yet it still gets a lower score then Splinter cell?
IGN is F'd up
GTA DLC avergae to 9.6 also
And SC:C Averages around 8.7

I am not trying to attack SC:C or anything but how does IGN come up with these scores?

These are not the only titles that have been like this.
Going over some of there review scores some of them should be higher and some should be lower
It makes no sence to have a score for the catigories and then have a final score being higher then the average even vise versa haing the average being higher then the final score

@Biggest Thxs for that info, that makes a little more sence now

blitz06233021d ago

Overall doesn't mean average. The game is probably better as an "overall" whole game than each one of its elements. Most likely due to the experience it gives out.

IGN usually does this. It happened to most other high profile games too.

Foxgod3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

IGN their scores are not an average.

Biggest3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Your links don't work, but I checked the site. GTA:L&D has 9, 9.5, 10, 9.5, 10 respectively. The overall is 92. That doesn't seem strange one bit. And while it says it isn't an average it does say

"It's important to note that the overall rating is not an average of the five individual categories. We believe that no game will ever fit into a simplistic numeric formula. Many titles are more than a sum of their parts, so the overall score is left to the judgment of the reviewer. This gives you a better sense of the reviewer's overall experience with the game rather than forcing our editors to use an average to determine the final rating for games of multiple types."

brianleppez3021d ago

a game is more than the sum of its parts? This may apply. Besides I'm pretty sure IGN doesn't do an average score of all the areas of the game.
