Sony E3 2010: Year of the MMO

looking forward to ff14, it'll be my first mmo. if ps3 can handle 256 players in one online match of fps mayhem without breaking a sweat, than they can handle epic mmos. looking forward to meeting yall in the game as well, am i going to kill yall or spare your lives, who knows. lol :)

I guess I appreciate the optimism... but there's something sad about listing four MMOs total and proclaiming it the "year of the MMO" for consoles.

With all the back-pedalling and cancellations from console MMO announcements, I'd say it's far too early to make that call. There's a noticeable lack of third-party support here.

Yeah the PS3 has that but it was let down with Mass Effect, it's such a great game and people who just own a PS3 won't get to experience it. That is a massive injustice in my eyes as theres no reason why they shouldn't is there?

They should bring SW:TOR to PS3 to make up for it (or at least make people forget), I would say bring it to both consoles but I don't think they could what with the Xbox not having HDD as standard.

over 99% of revenue generated from the PC platform consist of MMO subscription fees (with Starcraft and World of Warcraft as the main drivers). As the world moves toward massive console adoption, Sony and MS are moving to replace the PC. Sony has FF14 Online, The Agency, DC Universe, Free Realms, and several others. MS is putting a deal together with Blizzard to bring MMO's exclusively to the 720. Tick/tock, tick/tock for the PC.

my guess is that most ppl such as ^^^ who think PC is a dying breed and that gaming will purely be done on consoles havn't been gaming for very long, or in other words, children. i love my ps3 games as much as the next guy but you gotta accept that a sh*tload of ppl only find PC games appealing

Remember the days when everybody bought Cd's and played music through Cd players....until the iPod came along and transformed the industry?

Same thing will happen with gaming. There will be a fundamental shift in gaming towards the cloud. We are starting to see 100+ MB internet speeds...and this will be common in a couple of years. Consoles will simply connect to the cloud and all our gaming will be streamed. tick/tock.

Your metaphor is pretty flawed. A proper comparison would be like an iPod to a Zune, or something like that. The PC is by no means outdated tech, like a CD might be considered. In fact I would say that the PC would be considered the better tech in that metaphor.

And I think it's just as likely for consoles to die when cloud gaming comes along (if that ever actually happens).

Also, your 'couple of years' deadline is unrealistic. Try a decade at least. I still can't get basic cable (let alone fiber optic) and no one is willing to run lines to rural areas.

For me, 2005 was the year of the MMO. In that year I started and stopped playing WoW, it was fun at that time but I never went back to MMOs after that for two reasons:

1. Nothing in the genre will ever come close to WoW.
2. More importantly: They're a waste of time and money.

i will try final fantasy but even tho rpgs are my fav genre i have never really felt the urge to play mmo mainly due to paying sub scription as i no longer get the chance to sit at the computer for hours and hours

Since 2 years ago i saw a lot of "Sony + NCSoft for MMOs on PS3", "DCU on PS3!!" and so on, but never seen anything. Finally the time has come?

I am anticipating FFXIV the most. FFXI is the deepest MMO I ever played. I tried WoW, it is not my taste, the color scheme and character designs is horrible to me. Purple, green, orange skin, etc.

Definitely FFXIV on PC, having the ability to modify game files is good. Like the maps in FFXI, some people will know what I am talking about. Sometimes it can touch legality issue like botting or macroing beyond the games allowed for. In FFXI I used to use fishing bot when I do work or something. Can't do that on consoles.

Until everyone work and post on consoles, PC gaming will not die.
