CVG: Valve boss Gabe Newell has revealed the studio feels its Half-Life series needs to get back to "scaring" players.
So excited for what they have in store for the Half-Life series.
Well I'm ready. Scare me, thrill me, action me or all of the above.. Just get working on it.
Was the worst part of the game. I disagree with his direction.
I don't exactly remember crapping my pants playing the other Half-life games...
Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt creeped me out a lot. And basically any house or structure that had head crab zombies was pretty scary.
I don't think so. Like what Reach is doing, I think the next Half Life should really improve on the sizse and scale. Continue on with the direction Episode 2 took with it's somewhat large outdoor environments. As well as variety. And I'd also like the gunplay to change/improve. I still believe Half Life has some of the weakest shooting mechanics out of all the high-profile shooters out there.
yup. Because RE5 proved that bringing back Scares was impossible.. they failed miserably at it.. So I hope Valve takes HL in a better direction than Scares. We can just wait for Dead Space 2 to do that ;)
How did Re5 failed ? They didnt even try to do an horror game , it was a rather poor) action game . If you want to see an attempt , that was Dead Space , and a very good one . Anyway while i'm not so sure HL was ever about horror , it does need to get back a bit to it's "survival" roots . It can still reserve many surprises in that departement , if l4d was any example . But definitively need to improve the mechanics
@2 Reach brought up the scale/size? That's not what I've seen from the pictures/videos so far. I've seen small cliff-side environments with foggy backgrounds. @2.1 No, no they did NOT try to bring in scares. They tried to create an action game and did fairly well except they sort of screwed up on the controls. It's funny talking about this, I just started my second playthrough today.
I agree,Ravenholm was by far my favorite level in any of the Half-Life series.
I don't think so. Like what Reach is doing, I think the next Half Life should really improve on the size and scale. Continue on with the direction Episode 2 took with it's somewhat large outdoor environments. That last fight against the striders was one of the finest gaming moments in recent memory. As well as variety. And I'd also like the gunplay to change/improve. I still believe Half Life has some of the weakest shooting mechanics out of all the high-profile shooters out there.
Look up the Borealis. you wont find open ended gameplay on EP3...
Ooops. Double post.
... me this year.
I second that. This episodic gaming lark is a bit different to how I envisioned it when it was explained. Supposedly it was to be bite sized chunk gaming that was more frequent than full games. Here we are 3 years after episode 2 :/
After Portal 2 is done it leaves the door wide open for Episode 3 :) Just hope they dont spend their time with Left 4 Dead 3 instead.
Cool, I loved Ravenholm. Hoping for more of that sort of play with ep3. Get it done Gabe.
With improvements similar to that between 1 and 2. At least I'm hoping that's what happens
I doubt that . I think we will definitively get an Episode 3 as a last hurrah for the source engine , and maybe some closure on Gordon's main adventure . And then we'll get Half life 3 in at least a few years .
Just stick a Photo of Gabe Newell's face on the Cover and that should do it!!! ;-D
getting all jumpy during the church play through in Half Life 2. That's what I'm talking about.
Can't wait for the next half life.I beat all of them.I hope they do and some horror into it.Portal 2 will be awesome as well.Getting both of these awesome games on PC.
my favorite gaming experience...running from the Guardian in Ep.2. it was the most intense gaming moment i've ever had. i can only imagine what Ep.3 has in store for us!!
Putting poor Alyx in such danger in Episode 2 WAS frightening, at least for me. She's my favorite video game character. Please keep her safe!
I agree with Gabe. Make it more intimate with the player, bring things closer, and do the opposite of large scale, bring it in close. If they can recreate the feeling I had when I first experienced the "experiment gone wrong" sequence with the machine in the first half life, count me in.
in 99 or 2000 i was impressed and also was 'scared' in the sense very tensed cos if i remember this was the first game to use proper A.I. The Marines and the Head Crabs were very smart and for the first time i felt fear while playing a videogame because they made me think twice before i enter a room or a vent because the game always gave you the feeling that there would be an ambush or something just around the corner.
Don't forget Good, Gabe. HL2 was ok... but the (long, delayed) wait for it after HL1 just wasn't really worth it.
