Sony: The PS3 is in a marathon and not a sprint

Sony officials said on Thursday that their soft selling PS3 is in a "marathon" not "sprint" race in a statement made to GamePro.

"We developed the PS3 as a hardware that lasts for decades and believe we are in a marathon rather than a sprint," company spokesperson Nanako Kato said when asked by GamePro why the system was being outsold by rival Wii 6 to 1 in Japan.

The games are coming as we know, but seems like there are only 3 games that deemed themselves as saviors for the console. You can also say, games to show potential. Well that's the only games people ever really mention. Well you know what they are. As if I would buy a console for 3 games.

You can't sell an electrice device that has this many rumors of failure, come on what the first thing you do when you buy a product you check the quality and features(word of mouth). Hardcore gamers and myself will buy a 360 cuz we want to play gears of war and maybe other titles but the 65 percent that makeup the average consumer will not. why do you think M$ 360 has only sold 11 million units in 19 months with all these so call games, but Sony has sold 4 million with hardly any games in 7 months. You're not go to get a casual gamer to spend $400 on a piece of crap hardware. Sony game drought is over, but 360 hardware failure problems are just begining. I beleave the smart consumer will always choose the better quality and Sony is a hardware manufacture company and M$ will never be able to top that no matter how much money you have. I don't mind paying $200 more for a PS3 because I know the quality and features surpass the 360s because I have them side by side. Most xbots bash the PS3 to make themself feel better about their purchase and to justify the poor hardware. Reality will set in once your 360 fails, just like alot of my 360 friends when their 360 failed. You won't be defending 360, I guarantee it.

Things will start to turn around some in Japan once the bundles with Hot Shots Golf and some other game comes out. The PS2 is also doing well so people don't really seem to need a PS3 at the moment if they really want to play games. When people really feel like they have to have the system with some good games and if blu-ray truly shows itself as the ultimate format for HD then they'll start flying off the shelves.

edit: @7, i doubt the Wii will be able to sprint for at most 3 years

By outdated you mean graphics? No one seems to care about the graphics so much since PS2 is still selling and the Wii is selling like crazy. Sony's been able to last at least 7 years with each console...I'm not sure about the whole decade plan either...but their systems have alot of longevity.

Here in the UK its the next best thing. People love it, up here in the north everybody owns one. (nearly everyone) Blu-ray has made so many people happy and its might not have a huge ammount of games, but the ones it does have impress. I go into GAME, and its like the whole shop is devoted to sony. And yes they sell 360 games. But Sony are respected alot more here.

I mean, look the PS2 was released on November 24, 2000 that's not even 7 years ago. Compare PS2 games in terms of graphics, etc to Gears of war, Resistance, Lair, Kill Zone 2, Metal Gear, Lost Oddesey, etc. Well.. that's how much of a difference it will be between current gen consoles and the next gen consoles.

I know, I know... Sony is telling their fans that they will be using their PS3 for the next 10-20 years... but... isn't funny that the race just started and the PC already has more powerful hardware and games that are not possible on any of the consoles? Show me anything that looks near as good as Crysis...

Dude you hit that one on the head. 4yrs from now at MINIMUM I want to hear that the Xbox machine is planned and coming soon...i.e. 1 yr away. I have ZERO desire to play games that are outdated.

Everyone thinks the cell is futue proof... well I have news for you...it's not. I would bet a paycheck that in 1-2 years time we will see some new, better, faster form of it like a Dual Cell Core or something nutty like that. Technology will always improve...especially in a 4 yr window. And lets not forget the graphics chip and blu ray drive. In 4yrs time there will be better and faster tech around that as well. Heck look at how memory has evolved, 4 yrs from now 1GB of dedicated graphics memory may be low end for the industry.

Anyway, I dont want consoles to last decades...I want something new and shinny roughly every 5-6 yrs.

Stop making excuses Sony. You got greedy and made a machine that can pay you royalties when someone buys a game AND when someone buys a high-def (Blu-ray) movie. The only problem is: it cost so much to do so, that the system is sitting on store shelves and 3rd party developers are moving to your competitors. If they don't hold there own with XBOX 360 this year, they are in trouble. They can't afford to fall behind that much more. You can clearly see that the PS3 ISN'T more advanced than XBOX 360 graphicly, and in a 4 years the most Microsoft will come out with XBOX 720 and PS3 will be outdated.

I like Sony but I hope those comments are just putting a postive spin on a desperate situation. If Sony truely belives this 10 year crap and thinks things are still going good, they are lost.

You forget one thing Sony is the best hardware manufacturer in the World, M$ will never be able to top that, they will always depend on separate companies to develop their hardware, so who do you think has the advantage. Why do you think M$ still hasn't fix the ROD, I'm pretty sure they want to but it's because they have to have a separate company to redesign a new hardware revision which is going to take time. Sony will be able to cut cost at a much higher rate than M$ and match the 360 price by 2009. Don't give me that sh1t that both systems are equal at the same price, PS3 will be a more powerful, HD format, wifi at the same price. What product do you think consumers will choose for at the same price? I think these quotes are just by represtatives who's jobs and mindsets are just to be postive. I don't think Sony in general really believes this anymore. They understand the situation and that's why they are putting out Killzone 2 and had Sony Gamers day when the Halo 3 beta started. They are trying to counter Halo 3 right now. And also if there is a price drop at E3 like it's rumored, that's more evidence that they see the danger RIGHT NOW.

Sony's sprint will begin next month with arrival of Lair and hten Uncharted & Heavenly Sword. But MS and Nintendo will also do their best in that time.

With Halo3 & Bioshock from one side & Mario and SSBB from the other, Assassins and GTA4 in the middle, it wont be sprint or marathon. It will be warzone wtih 3 gladiators in the ring: MS, Nintendo and Sony. Who wins?

Keep selling the ps2 since developers won't abandon that 125 Million user base. When you have milked the last possible sale out of the ps2 ( 2008) Push the ps3 in a big way. By that time, the ps3 should be about 399.99 - 299.99 ( Nov 08) and you will still have the majority of gamers who have yet purchase a next gen console. The ps2 is holding off alot of people from making the jump. Sony just has to sit and wait for the jump to next gen. Smart move, only MS can stop them.

The reason the 360 has sold only 10-11 million units is because there are a lot of people who haven't made the jump from the PS2.
Those gamers are waiting for the price cut/games and they will all jump ship to the PS3 likely, and when that happens the console war will take a huge turn in Sony's favor.

Difference 126 million

There are 126 million PS2/Xbox owners out there that haven't made the jump yet and a very large part of that number are PS2 owners.

I think the time has finally come to get the PS3. I agree, it is a marathon. Either system should, for the price last more than a few years. I don't think is about long race or not. Sony is practically telling people buy our consoles now before we show you the goods. While most of us want a PS3 and will eventually buy one. It wouldn't hurt buying a PS3 when the games arrive and we probably endup paying less. Why pay more to get a PS3 now and have it collecting dust when I can pay less when Metal Gear, Final Fantasy and the good games come out?
The only reason why some would buy a PS3 now is simply because of Brand Loyalty.... Sorry but many of us are loyal to our bank accounts first and then to a video game console.

the reason why sony expect to be around for decades is because it promoting the ps3 as a blu-ray player 1st and a gaming console second. There expecting blu-ray to win the hd war which would in turn keep the ps3 around because it will be the standard. But if you ask me I think they have too much invested blu-ray that why that's why they put in the ps3 hence the high price. The ps3 is what's selling blu-ray. If they weren't so sure of themselves they would have left the blu-ray separate the price would be lower and that would be a wrap for this war numbers would be alot different. Sony isn't just counting on blu-ray to it must win the hd format war in order to secure there ps3.
