As video games continue to outstrip every other form of entertainment in terms of sales, their new-found mainstream prominence presents their creators with a new set of challenges. The stakes involved in releasing a game into the current market are now arguably higher than ever before. New IPs don't just need to be able to compete, they're expected to hit one out of the park on their first try. Established franchises, for their part, need to increase the size of their audiences with each new release, as well as satisfy the demands of committed fans.
