SEGA: Sony PS3 needs a price cut

An executive of Sega Sammy Holdings' game unit said Sony will likely need to substantially cut the prices of its game console PlayStation 3 by the end of the year to stir up slow demand.

Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii outsold the PS3 by a ratio of over six to one in June in Japan, according to game magazine publisher Enterbrain, solidifying its leading position.

"Name brand, price and software are what count," Sega Corp. corporate director Masanao Maeda told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

"Since it's getting difficult to make software availability a differentiating factor, superior marketing and pricing strategy will be the key for Sony."

Sega giving advice on consoles ........O wow. Perhaps if they followed their advice they would still be making consoles.

Price cut from $600?
No $#it Sega. Sega is definately 2 cans short of a 6pack.

"Since it's getting difficult to make software availability a differentiating factor, superior marketing and pricing strategy will be the key for Sony."

Because you "KNOW" how to have a successful console, right?

WRONG

Sony doesn't need advice from a failed company that couldn't provide us with a console business structure to last.

@mp

PS - Bitter Sega fan from the Dreamcast

PSS - No this doesn't effect me either way, I just think Sega offering advice when they failed be successful in the console manufactering biz is not sound advice.

Personally I hope Sony doesn't cut the price until 1 1/2 - 2 years from launch just to prove that Sony doesn't need one. Price will not be the overall factor, they BADLY NEED games.

The PS3 with a price cut would better for both gamers and developers. No need to get you panties bunched up over this. We all know a lower price would help. Jeeezzz

You act like Sega was the 1st to say this. Every one is saying this. They are not taking a jab at Sony they need Sony to make money now.

Be reasonable now man. I understand that Sega is being a little hypocrit with this advice, but the price cut for the PS3 can't come any sooner for Sony. Hell I'm even waiting for the price cut before I get a PS3.

If the price cut will take too long than the sales will stay this low, thus smaller instal base, thus less developer support, thus less games on the system.

But don't worry, Sony is seeing this too and I think a price cut will be announced this E3, I hope.

don t discredit its advice based on the company but on the advice itself.

Skizelli3758d ago

If anyone qualifies to make such a remark, it's Sega, simply based on the fact that they've made such mistakes and know what they're talking about. It's good, friendly advice. Why get your panties in a bunch over it?

Actually its what most analyst are saying, nothing new. The PS3 is a great machine, though price always is the factor for people. People don't hate the ps3, there just waiting before it gets more ''affordable''. If you look at the whole demografic of people, they are excited about the ps3...but the price is the real turn off.I know Sony is a solid company but they should not be ''riding'' on the succes of the ps2, they have to be agressive and do like there new to the market(also this time around they should have some tricks up there sleeves). There mentality should be more less ''meh..we got loyal fans'' but be more like ''How can we attract more people to this console?''.
