Nintendo: Staying Ahead Of The Game

Forbes: Nintendo today is perhaps the biggest player in the videogame industry, with its Wii console and DS and DSi handhelds handily beating the competition in terms of units sold worldwide, as well as a number of top-selling game franchises. Reggie Fils-Aimé, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, talked recently with Forbes about new trends in technology and how Nintendo plans to stay ahead of the game.

The story is too old to be commented.

By providing the tech of yesterday at exorbitant prices. As long as it has a catchy name, logo, and stream of commercials, you can guarantee it will sell with little effort in development of technology.

Pennywise2813d ago

Nintendo is so far behind "The game". This article is comical.

Maddens Raiders2812d ago (Edited 2812d ago )

hmm...not in my house....they're not even in the "game".

kratos1232812d ago

ahha nintendo fans cant appreciate your comment guys fear88 speaks the truth get over it.
Nintendo just got lucky im really interested to see if they can pull of the same trick next gen, time will tell

iFLOWLIKEWATER2812d ago

Well, this article isn't for people who don't like what Nintendo is doing. And I would look at myself as a loser if I was to say that, "I'm not contributing to that out-dated tech, so Nintendo is actually losing...". Obviously Nintendo is winning at something whether people like it or not.

eagle212812d ago

In sales...and both Sony and Nintendo make awesome first party games. With that said, what is Natal and Sony Arc if you guys think Nintendo is "not in the game"?

lol :)

ThatArtGuy2812d ago

So we're talking about Apple now?

van-essa2812d ago

You're absolutely right and to all the haters out there, what is Natal and Arc (4 years later) if Nintendo isn't ahead of the game?

Can you guys remember, not so long ago everyone hated motions controlls... till Sony and Micrososft announced them.

Mahr2812d ago

"As long as it has a catchy name, logo, and stream of commercials, you can guarantee it will sell with little effort in development of technology."

If things were that easy, there would be a lot more game companies pulling down ten figures in profit each year.

Maddens Raiders2812d ago

...and I still hate/despise/loathe/abhor them, so what's your point? :)

badz1492812d ago (Edited 2812d ago )

there, fixed!

this is Reggie afterall. that guy knows nothing but sales! kinda like Kotick!

Puts things in perspective.

AngryFork2812d ago

Maybe if staying ahead means taking 5 years on a Zelda game because you're too lazy/cheap to hire more people to put more games out on time and think a Gamecube port will suffice.

While Sony puts out 2-3 GOTY-nominees every year. Yea Nintendo is really ahead -_-.

ChickeyCantor2812d ago (Edited 2812d ago )

@angryfork,

You have no clue how gamedesign/development works do you?

If you were to work on a game for 5 years, you do realize you pay people by the hour. How is that cheap?

They actually output many games in a year, they aren't just on the Wii.
Dont forget the DS.

"While Sony puts out 2-3 GOTY-nominees every year"
Hey give the actual development team more credit, Sony does nothing but fund them. And besides 2-3? have you even been counting the amount of games that are going to be released this year by Nintendo( and in co-up with other developers like team-Ninja)? Perhaps not GOTY(which doesn't mean sh/t) but they are always appreciated and you know they get rated high.

So nice way of contradicting yourself.

Edit:
"
They don't get paid by the hour except janitors or whatever. Animators, programmers etc. they all get base salaries."

Which are usually based of an 8 hour work course.

Whether you think DS is important or not, those are Nintendo games as well.

" but what about last and the year before? Oh yea we were still re-playing Galaxy or Brawl, trying to figure out why Nintendo isn't putting anything out. "

O really?
I bet you never knew of battalion wars, or Fire emblem. And many more.

"Nintendo has the money/resources to put out a new Mario/Zelda EVERY YEAR if they wanted to. (I'm not saying that's what I want), but they don't. But guess who does? SONY."

Because they take the time to craft their stuff and not rush it out the door and hope it takes off. Next to that the groups are only bigger because of the HD content. PS3/360 games are also more expensive compared to Wii games( from a retail point of view).

And TIME = MONEY.

Twilight princess sold more than God of War I & II combined So whats your point?

AngryFork2812d ago

K i'm about to rip this post apart.

""You have no clue how gamedesign/development works do you?

If you were to work on a game for 5 years, you do realize you pay people by the hour. How is that cheap?""

They don't get paid by the hour except janitors or whatever. Animators, programmers etc. they all get base salaries. Nintendo is cheap for not hiring more animators, more programmers etc. to get the game done within 2 years rather than 5.

Ubisoft had like 400 people do Assassins Creed 2. Why? Because they wanted to get it out in 2 years. Nintendo is still shleping along with probably a 50 man team at most which is why these games take forever, and Nintendo doesn't care because Wii Sports sells more than Zelda ever will and requires less than 1/10th the resources to make.

""They actually output many games in a year, they aren't just on the Wii.
Dont forget the DS.""

I don't take DS seriously in this argument, the resources to develop a DS game is probably the same as a N64/PS1 game. It's not worth commenting on.

""Hey give the actual development team more credit, Sony does nothing but fund them. And besides 2-3? have you even been counting the amount of games that are going to be released this year by Nintendo( and in co-up with other developers like team-Ninja)? Perhaps not GOTY(which doesn't mean sh/t) but they are always appreciated and you know they get rated high.""

Yea, they're putting out games this year I agree, but what about last and the year before? Oh yea we were still re-playing Galaxy or Brawl, trying to figure out why Nintendo isn't putting anything out.

Nintendo has the money/resources to put out a new Mario/Zelda EVERY YEAR if they wanted to. (I'm not saying that's what I want), but they don't. But guess who does? SONY.

AngryFork2812d ago

Also I forgot to mention all Wii games are in SD. Sony puts out games in HD which require WAY more time.

Nintendo only has to do games with SD graphics, and they can't even do that every year, we have to wait years and years because they refuse to spend money for the gamers. Why should they spend money when they make so much on cheap crap like Wii Sports? It's just logic. Good for them but bad for us.

ChickeyCantor2812d ago

"Because they take the time to craft their stuff and not rush it out the door and hope it takes off."

Ok this was just a troll move.

kratos1232812d ago (Edited 2812d ago )

@ sidar denial at it finest
angryfork just explained to you that they dont want to put more man power on it dont you understand that

TruthbeTold2812d ago (Edited 2812d ago )

How does more man power in a small amount of time trump less man power over a longer period of time in the effort dept? If a game takes 5 years and 150 employees getting paid a yearly salary, and another game takes 2 years and 400 employees getting paid a yearly salary, all it means is that the latter was rushed. Everyone and their mother knows that Zelda games don't get released until they are as close to perfect as Nintendo can make them. You guys don't know what you're talking about. You're just talking. And that from a biased and seemingly hateful standpoint.

ChickeyCantor2812d ago

@kratos123,

You could learn one or two things from TruthBeTold.

na-no-nai2812d ago

lol im with sidar and truth. i rather let devs take their time on games and released it when their ready unlike rushing out a game that is full of crap. beside i can wait. and i dont want zelda, mario, or metroid, fire emblem and stuff to be like cod, lol every year same game but better graphics

Since this is forbes obviously it will focus on the bottom line of the company, and with Nintendo's sales performance it IS ahead of the game. However when it comes to what matters most in the industry, the games and services, Nintendo is far behind. As a matter of fact they aren't even in the game in my house. Only MS and Sony is and atm MS barely.

hoops2812d ago (Edited 2812d ago )

Actually from a profit standpoint in software...Sony is last amoung the three and MS is ahead of Sony in overall software profits. And software is actually where these companies make their most profits.
So if anyone is BARELY making it is Sony...However the reality is Sony like MS are doing great. They are both making it...just not as great as Nintendo this time around.
There is no way Sony or MS will catch the Wii this generation when its over. Th Wii is too far ahead in overall sales of hardware and Software in most areas and demographics.
Nintendo pulled it off. They brought out nothing more then the GameCube with motion controls and targeted a market not tapped.
That's business excellence plain and simple. Notice how MS and Sony are now trying to copy this model now? LOL

nycredude2812d ago

I disgree with you man. Software MS isn't in the lead. The only thing keeping MS gaming division in the black is the money they make in hardware and xbox live. If MS stopped charging for live they would be losing money.

The only thing keeping Sony int he black, since they still lose on hardware is the software and psn sales.

hoops2812d ago

Nintendo is ahead of the game from a business perspective...which is where it counts in the real business world. They grabbed the untapped market and ran with it. Thats the only part where they can really say they are ahead of the game. Which in reality is what its all about for a company and the casual gamer.
Their business model killed Sony and MS this time out and the reason Sony and MS are copying them fully with motion controls to capitilize on this motion trend.
Hate what Nintendo has done, but they brutilized Sony and MS in all sale areas this generation
